  • The Muse of Fire: Liberty and War Songs As a Source of American History
3 7^ A'£?/</ THE MUSE OF FIRE: LIBERTY AND WAR SONGS AS A SOURCE OF AMERICAN HISTORY DISSERTATION Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY By Kent Adam Bowman, B.A., M.A Denton, Texas August, 1984 Bowman, Kent Adam, The Muse of Fire; Liberty and War Songs as a Source of American History. Doctor of Philosophy (History), August, 1984, 337 pp., bibliography, 135 titles. The development of American liberty and war songs from a few themes during the pre-Revolutionary period to a distinct form of American popular music in the Civil War period reflects the growth of many aspects of American culture and thought. This study therefore treats as historical documents the songs published in newspapers, broadsides, and songbooks during the period from 1765 to 1865. Chapter One briefly summarizes the development of American popular music before 1765 and provides other introductory material. Chapter Two examines the origin and development of the first liberty-song themes in the period from 1765 to 1775. Chapters Three and Four cover songs written during the American Revolution. Chapter Three describes battle songs, emphasizing the use of humor, and Chapter Four examines the figures treated in the war song. Chapter Five covers the War of 1812, concentrating on the naval song, and describes the first use of dialect in the American war song. Chapter Six covers the Mexican War (1846-1848) and includes discussion of the aggressive American attitude toward the war as evidenced in song.

  • In the Trenches: a First World War Diary
In the Trenches: A First World War Diary By Pierre Minault Translated by Sylvain Minault Edited by Gail Minault Edited for Not Even Past by Mark Sheaves Originally published on Not Even Past <notevenpast.org> Department of History, The University of Texas at Austin September 22-November 16, 2014 © Not Even Past In the Trenches Pierre Minault’s Diary of the First World War Not Even Past is marking the centennial of the outbreak of the first World War with a very special publication. Our colleague, Gail Minault, a distinguished professor of the history of India, has given us her grandfather’s diary, a near daily record of his experiences in the trenches in France. Pierre Minault made his first diary entry on this very day, September 22, one hundred years ago, in 1914. We will be posting each of his entries exactly one hundred years after he wrote them. You will be able to follow Pierre’s progress and read his thoughtful and moving personal observations of life on the front as day follows day. Sylvain Minault originally translated the diary from French. Gail Minault edited this translation and added the following introduction. We are extremely grateful to her for sharing her grandfather’s diary with all of us. Introduction By Gail Minault This year we commemorate the outbreak of World War I, which began in August 1914, with all the powers of Europe declaring war on each other in a domino effect born of alliances and ententes. Reading the history of the war, one becomes aware of the carnage, the stalemate, the sacrifice of an entire generation of young men to great power politics.

  • Gustav Mahler's Third Symphony
Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony: Program, Reception, and Evocations of the Popular by Timothy David Freeze A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Music Musicology) in The University of Michigan 2010 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Steven M. Whiting, Co-Chair Professor Albrecht Riethmüller, Freie Universität Berlin, Co-Chair Professor Roland J. Wiley Professor Michael D. Bonner Associate Professor Mark A. Clague © 2010 Timothy David Freeze All rights reserved To Grit ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The road leading to the completion of this dissertation was longer and more scenic than I ever intended it to be. It is a great pleasure to acknowledge here the many individuals and organizations that provided support and encouragement along the way. I am especially grateful to the co-chairs of my committee. Without the unflagging support of Steven M. Whiting, whose sage counsel on matters musical and practical guided me from start to finish, this project would not have been possible. I am equally indebted to Albrecht Riethmüller, whose insight and intellectual example were a beacon by whose light this dissertation took shape. I would also like to thank R. John Wiley, whose extensive and penetrating feedback improved the dissertation and my own thinking in countless ways, and Mark Clague and Michael Bonner, both of whom provided valuable comments on content and style. In Ann Arbor, I would like to acknowledge the support of the entire musicology faculty at the University of Michigan. Louise K. Stein gave helpful advice in the early stages of this project. In Berlin, I benefited from conversations with Federico Celestini, Sherri Jones, and Peter Moormann.

  • West Papua Decolonization Songs, Social Media, and the Remixing of Resistance1
“More than a Music, It’s a Movement”: West Papua Decolonization Songs, Social Media, and the Remixing of Resistance1 Camellia Webb-Gannon and Michael Webb Since 2010, in the southwest Pacific Islands there has been an outpour- ing of decolonization songs.2 This music expresses solidarity with West Papuans’ struggle for independence from Indonesia—through lyrical texts and also by implication in the artists’ choice of musical style. Increasingly, local supporters of West Papuans’ self-determination have been creating do-it-yourself (DIY) videos to accompany these songs, which they circu- late on the Internet, mostly via YouTube and Facebook. Mostly unpro- fessionalized, this corpus of songs and song-video mash-ups (hereafter, “song-videos”) can be considered the southwest Pacific region’s dominant medium of popular political dissent in support of the Free West Papua movement. Previously, Pacific Islanders had occasionally composed and recorded songs of colonial defiance (Webb-Gannon, Webb, and Solis 2018). This movement is different, however, since it involves a substantial number of songs, most of which circulate in amateur or fan-produced video form. Moreover, the songs have emanated from all of Melanesia’s culturally diverse nation-states and, quite recently, from Indigenous Aus- tralian and Aotearoa/New Zealand musicians as well.3 This recent surge of songs and videos results from a concatenation of linguistic, musical, technological, economic, and political factors, whereby the creative application of globally circulating digital tools, such as social media and video-sharing sites, has resonated with traditional, preexist- ing Melanesian practices of borrowing and exchanging songs and dances, which in the past were considered prestige trade goods.

  • Carol Shooting
FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY Phyllis Nagy CAROL By PHYLLIS NAGY Based on the novel THE PRICE OF SALT by PATRICIA HIGHSMITH 1 EXT. NYC SUBWAY STATION. APRIL 1953. NIGHT. Out of the darkness, the screeching moan of an arriving train. A dark swarm of bodies file out of the LEXINGTON and 59TH ST STATION. We descend upon the crowd, singling out a young man in coat and hat, JACK TAFT, late 20s, who weaves through the line of COMMUTERS, some opening umbrellas to the patchy skies. JACK buys an evening paper at a newsstand and makes his way across 59th. EXT./INT. RITZ TOWER HOTEL. NIGHT. JACK enters the hotel and we follow him as he walks through the lobby to the bar. JACK easily finds a stool, nods to the BARTENDER and tosses him the newspaper. The BARTENDER points to a bottle of Dewars and JACK gives him a thumbs up. He scans the cocktail lounge adjacent to the bar - not much activity in there, either: a FEW TABLES OF BUSINESSMEN getting drunk, an ELDERLY COUPLE, TWO WOMEN tucked away in a corner table. JACK checks his watch and the BARTENDER sets down his drink. JACK Not much going on for a Friday. BARTENDER It’s early yet. JACK downs his scotch, slides his empty glass over to the BARTENDER, taps out a rhythm along the edge of the bar. JACK Say Cal, make it a double, would you? And one for yourself. I gotta make a call. JACK gets up. INT. RITZ TOWER HOTEL. BAR/LOUNGE.
