Elkinton Department of Entomology, University of Massachusetts, Fernald Hall, Amherst, MA 01003, USA Received 20 November 2001; accepted 2 March 2003 Abstract Pieris napi oleracea Harris is a native pierid butterfly that has suffered a range reduction in New England that began after the invasion of its range by the non-native congener Pieris rapae L. and one of its braconid parasitoids, Cotesia glomerata (L.). P. napi has nearly disappeared from Massachusetts, but remains common in northern Vermont. We investigated food plant abundance and Cotesia spp. larval parasitism as possible factors to explain the historical changes in P. napiÕs distribution. We found that the current range of P. napi was not explained by the abundance of its key first generation food plant (two-leafed toothwort, Cardamine diphylla [Michx.]). We also found that levels of Cotesia spp. parasitism in meadows in the second generation were similar in Vermont and Massachusetts. Further, we found that both C. glomerata and the related introduced Pieris spp. parasitoid Cotesia rubecula (Marshall) forage for hosts predominantly in sunny meadows and not in woods, where the first generation of P. napi occurs. We found that under field conditions in meadow habitats, C. glomerata parasitizes P. napi at higher rates than P. rapae. We postulate that the persistence of P. napi in Vermont and its disappearance in Massachusetts is caused by high parasitism of the second generation by C. -

4/6/2020 London Rocket London Rocket Sisymbrium irio L. Family: Brassicaceae. Names: Sisymbrium was the Greek name of a fragrant herb. London Rocket. Summary: An erect, annual, many branched plant, with deeply lobed leaves that does not form a rosette. It has clusters of small, 4-petalled, yellow flowers in late winter to spring on the tops of stems that form long (25-110 mm), narrow seed pods that may be slightly curved. Description: Cotyledons: Two. Club shaped, Tip rounded. Sides convex. Base tapered. Surface hairless. Petiole longer than the blade. First Leaves: Club shaped, paired. The first pair have rounded tips and smooth edges. The second pair have pointed tips and toothed edges. Hairless or a few hairs. Leaves: Alternate. Does not form a rosette. Stipules - None. Petiole - On lower leaves. Blade - 30-160 mm long x 13-70 mm wide, triangular in outline, deeply lobed or serrated or toothed (usually 2-6 pairs), lobes are usually toothed, end lobe is pointed and larger than the side lobes. The side lobes usually point towards the base of the leaf. Tip pointed. Smooth and hairless or a few scattered hairs. Stem leaves - Alternate. Similar to rosette leaves but not as lobed or unlobed, sometimes arrow shaped. Hairless or small hairs. Stems: Slender, erect, round, up to 1000 mm tall. Often with slender, curved, simple hairs near the base, usually hairless near the top. Usually much branched from the base with spreading stems. Butterfly Surveys, Knepp Castle Estate, 2013 Transect Survey, Northern & Middle Blocks (with reference to surveys July 2005 – 2012) Introduction Butterflies have been the subject of annual surveys, usually in July, for a total of nine years (2005-13 inclusive), as part of the overall monitoring programme to assess the effects of the naturalistic grazing regime first implemented in 2001 and since expanded over much of the Knepp Castle Estate. These surveys of the Northern and Middle Blocks were initially conducted by Rich Howarth of the Sussex Wildlife Trust, but in 2012 the task of monitoring butterflies over the wider Wildland project area was taken on by Neil Hulme, Conservation Adviser for the Sussex Branch of Butterfly Conservation. The methodology previously employed by Rich Howarth has been maintained for the Northern and Middle Blocks; namely the standard UKBMS Transect technique, the details of which have been described in earlier reports. The key feature to note is the subdivision of the Transect route into 26 recording ‘parcels’. This year the Transect was again walked over two days, as it has proven difficult to complete the route within a single day, during the hours when butterflies are likely to be on the wing. This year the Transect was walked on 1st and 3rd August. Although July dates are considered preferable for consistency, such minor differences in timing are unlikely to impact on comparisons with historical data. Summary Species diversity reached its highest level (23 species) since surveying commenced in 2005, providing the firmest indication yet that some species are reacting positively to habitat change across the Northern and Middle Blocks. -
