10. Kaluthara Definition for Home Garden1 1. A piece of land which has a dwelling house and some form of cultivation can be considered as a home garden if the total area of the piece of land is twenty or less than twenty perches. 2. A piece of land which has a dwelling house and some form of cultivation, if total land areas is more than twenty perches can also be considered as a home garden if following two conditions are satisfied. a. It is mainly meant for residential purposes. b. A produce of cultivated land in the home garden is largely for home consumption. Examples for Home Garden a) A land of extent 20 perches or less has a dwelling house and a few bearing coconut trees. b) A land of 20 perches or less, has a dwelling house and having extensive cultivation mainly for commercial purposes By definition (1) this land can be considered as a home garden c) A two acre land has dwelling house. Although the extent covered by a house is comparatively small and few crops are grown mainly for home consumption. According to definition (2) this land is also a home garden. d) A small house in a two roods land. But the usable land has been intensively cultivated with vegetable crops which are mainly for sale. Although this land has a dwelling house and also extent is small, as the produce from the land is not mainly for home consumption, it will not be treated as a home garden. However, in this survey cases like (d) have been treated as a home garden by excluding the area under commercial cultivation. For an example a one acre land with cinnamon cultivation (commercial purpose) also having a dwelling house, a small area around the house, may be 20 perches or less was separated out from the total land and considered as a home garden. Rest of the land was not counted to the home garden area and it was treated as land area under commercial cultivation. 1 Department of Census and Statistics, Sri Lanka. 1 Conversion Factors All figures in the data tables are given in hectares. However, only total figures of all tables were converted into acres and given in a separate row at the end of each table. Due to inadequate space of the tables it is not possible to accommodate all figures in both units. The following conversion factors can be used to convert hectares into acres or perches. In some cases, when you are totaling the extent figures of the tables, total and grand total figures may slightly vary due to the adding of decimals. 2 1. Distribution of home gardens in Kalutara District Kalutara district is located in the south west of Sri Lanka. This administrative district is divided into 14 Divisional Secretary divisions and 762 Grama Niladhari Divisions. This District is in the wet Zone, the average annual rainfall is 1,633 mm and the average annual temperature is 26.9°C. The elevation varies from sea level to 276 meters. The distribution pattern of the home gardens in the Kalutara district is shown in Figure 1. The total number of home gardens in the district is about 271,108 and the total extent of all home gardens is about 21,710 ha. (53,624 acres). The total extents of home gardens in the Divisional Secretary Divisions less than the extent shown in the National Land Use Survey (NLUS) conducted in 2019. This is due to exclusion of areas which are adjoining to home garden under commercial crops and based on the home garden definition considered. 2. Present status of home gardens in Kalutara District Among the total number of home gardens in the district, about 69% of home gardens are underutilized due to various reasons such as lack of capital, labour shortage, lack of technical know-how, shortage of planting materials, inadequate extension services etc. (Fig. 2). Home gardens are mainly having wells and pipe borne water as their water source. Number of home gardens and their extents available in Kalutara District The total number of home gardens in the Kalutara district is about 271,108. The size of the home gardens is varying and the majority are less than 0.05 ha (20 perches). There are about 2,190 home gardens which are larger than 0.40 ha. (160 perches or 1ac). There are about 28 % of the home gardens (about 75,172 home gardens) in the district are having enough space for the cultivation of tree crops (Fig 4).     Flood Situation Report Colombo | Sri Lanka Flood Situation Update No.2 – Sri Lanka 18 May 2010 at 1830 hrs GLIDE: FL-2010-000092-LKA Situation Since Friday, 14 May 2010, heavy monsoon rains have resulted in flash floods, high-winds, landslides, lightning and thunder storms in 11 districts in Sri Lanka. Nine of the districts are in the southeast and include: Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Matara, Kegalle, Puttalam and Galle. Two of the affected districts are in the northeast: Trincomalee and Anuradhapura. See attached table breakdown and map. As of Tuesday, 18 May 2010, over 298,543 persons (62,261 families) have been affected by the heavy rains. This includes minor displacement of 7,477 people and 8 deaths. The Government of Sri Lanka is responding to the crisis through local and central levels and the Navy has been deployed with their boat teams to assist with evacuations. The Department of Irrigation has indicated that rising water levels exist for the following areas (see details in Annex 1): • Kelani River, Hanwella DS Division, Colombo District • Kalu Ganga (river), Palindanuwara DS Division, Kalutara District • Gin Ganga (river) The National Building Research Organisation has issued a Landslide warning (level 2 – be ready for evacuation) to the following districts and AGA Divisions under threat: • Ratnapura District – Palmadulla, Kuruvita, Eheliyagoda, Kalawana, Kolonna, Elapatha Divisions • Kalutara District – Kalutara, Bulathsinhala, Horana, Palinda Nuwara, Agalawatte, Walallawita, Bandaragama, Mathugama, Ingiriya, Panadura Divisions • Galle District – Neluwa, Hiniduma, Thawalama, Baddegama, Elpitiya, Bope Poddala, Nagoda, Karandeniya, Weliwitiya Divithura Divisions • Kegalle District – Deraniyagala, Yatiyantota, Dehiowita Divisions Warning of cut slope failures possible in Colombo and Gampaha Districts.

The Amazing Lanka website describes many ancient monasteries as well as the modern (forest) monasteries located at the sites, showing the exact locations on satellite maps, and giving information on the history, directions, etc. There are many monasteries listed in this guides, but to get a general idea of of all monasteries in Sri Lanka it is enough to see a couple of monasteries connected to different traditions and in different areas of the country. There is no perfect place in samṃsāra and as long as one is not liberated from mental defilements one will sooner or later start to find fault with a monastery. There is no monastery which is perfectly quiet and where the monks are all arahants. Rather than trying to find the perfect external place, which does not exist, it is more realistic to be content with an imperfect place and learn to deal with the defilements that come up in one’s mind.
