Future Watch – Setting the Stage for Regeneration
http://www.architectsdatafile.co.uk/news/future-watch-setting-the-stage-for- regeneration/ Thursday, 30th November 2017 Future Watch – Setting the stage for regeneration Tim Foster With cities’ night time economy being seen as increasingly important in the future, Tim Foster, partner at Foster Wilson Architects, reflects on how theatre design projects that put placemaking at their core can catalyse regeneration. Following the debate around placemaking in recent years it is apparent that the term means many different things to different people. Local community activists believe it is about community participation and the making of places in which people have ownership, while property people believe it is about creating a congenial environment which will attract people to their developments, making them easier to sell or rent for a good return: the reality probably lies somewhere in between. As quoted in a recent article in The Guardian, the US academic Richard Florida – considered to be the guru of placemaking – told the mayors of major American cities in 2002 that attracting ‘hipsters’ to their towns was crucial. “Don’t waste money on stadiums and concert halls, or luring big companies with tax breaks. Instead, make your town a place where hipsters want to be, with a vibrant arts and music scene and a lively cafe culture. Embrace the ‘three T’s’ of technology, talent and tolerance, and the ‘creative class’ will come flocking.” This is really the same cycle that Jane Jacobs described in her seminal work ‘The Death and Life of Great American Cities’, published in 1961, whereby districts fall into decay, the artists move in attracted by the cheap rents, the hipsters and coffee shops follow, the area regenerates, forcing the rents back up and the artists and original residents to move on. -

Mercury Musical Developments and Musical Theatre Network present in partnership with Royal & Derngate, Northampton 26 - 27 March 2020 Shining a light on new British musical theatre mercurymusicals.com musicaltheatrenetwork.com Welcome Theatres like ours exist to bring people together and we were so looking forward to welcoming such an array of musical theatre talent to Northampton this week from across the country and beyond. Sadly that is not possible right now, but we’re determined to continue to champion all the artists who were to perform on our stages this week, so we’ve taken the decision with Mercury Musical Developments and Musical Theatre Network to still publish this year’s BEAM programme, to salary and continue to support all the artists who were due mercurymusicals.com to perform during this week’s showcase and to encourage all who were due to attend to share and distribute their work with one another online. We are so grateful to those of you who were due to be attending this week who have kindly donated the cost of your ticket towards helping us to pay our artists and freelancers. Many of you who attended the UK Musical Theatre Conference here last year will have heard us talk of our commitment to developing new musical theatre for mid-scale regional venues and tours. We’ve had a thrilling year since in which we’ve hosted dozens of artists in Northampton to create original work in partnership with Perfect Pitch, China Plate, Musical Theatre Network, Mercury Musical Developments, Scottish Opera and Improbable. Thanks to the support of an Arts Council England “Ambition For Excellence” grant and partnerships with several midscale venues nationwide, we’re also excited to be able to announce that five of the projects we’ve developed here this year have been fully commissioned. -
Henry Filloux-Bennett, Is a Digital Take on the Classic Novel by Oscar Wilde
PROGRAMME ... Dorian Gray now Thank you for signing in and being a part of this adaptation of The Picture Of Dorian Gray. As theatres currently remain closed, stories across the world are now being told online. The Barn Theatre streamed their magical production of Peter Pan, as well as murder mystery co-production, What a Carve Up! with Lawrence Batley Theatre and The New Wolsey Theatre. Christmas at Oxford Playhouse brought online productions of Father Christmas and Sammy and the Beanstalk, an urban version of a classic fairytale, for audiences to watch at home. Theatr Clwyd made Christmas happen with the The Panto That Nearly Never Was, which certainly lived up to the title. And now, these five theatres have joined together to co-produce an Oscar Wilde classic in the digital age. For most of 2020, we spent more and more time online. With endless zoom quizes, home school lessons and virtual meetings, online has become the new normal. The Picture of Dorian Gray as reimagined by Henry Filloux-Bennett, is a digital take on the classic novel by Oscar Wilde. Directed by Tamara Harvey, our adaptation has been plunged into the current social media obsessed world we experience today. But is this filtered down version of reality worth the cost? Are we all as perfect as we seem? 91 562 983 WELCOME 1 ... How does The Picture of Dorian Gray differ from your other digital adaptations? This is the fourth digital production I’ve worked on since lockdown began last year, and I think with each production the ambition has grown - certainly following What a Carve Up!, Tamara and I were incredibly keen to make sure that we built on what we’d been able to achieve and push the boundaries of what we could create.
