It had 161 inhabitants in 1881, living on 625 acres, and has a rateable value of £889. The soil principally belongs to Clement Palmet, and E. Bowyer Sparks, Esqs., CaptainS. H. Brereton, and the Rev. J. Mortl6Ck Roberts, M.A. The Hall is prettily situated in a park-like enclosure of 35 acres of undulating la:nd, and there is a lake which is well stocked with water-fowl. · The CHURCH (St. Andrew) comprises nav~, north aisle, and transept, south porch, chancel, and square to-wer with one bell. ~'he roof is of high pitch, and many of the old open l.'leats with carved poppies still remain. The interior was restored in 1869 at a cost of £550. The register dates from 1547. A sta1ued glass window has been inserted in the chancel by Mr. Henry Page, in memory of his father. The dischar(J'ed rectory, valued in K.B. at £8 lls. 4d., is consolidated with that of Thornage (which see), and the rector lws . here 20 acres of glebe, and a yearly tithe rent-charge of £177, awarded in 1839. The Rev. Charles John Brereton, B.A., who resides at Thornage, is the rector. The METHODIST FREE CHAPEL was built in 1838. This parish was united with Briningham District School Board in 1875, and new schools to accommodate 150 children were erected here in l87o, at a cost of £1,800. The average attendance is about 135. The· Poor's Land (2a. 33p.), let for £3 lOs., was received in exchange at the enclosure ~n 1837: in lieu of land purchased with £10, left by Nicholas Rogers in 1693,. and £] 5 subscribed. BRISLEY is a. straggling village on the Fakenham road, 3 miles west of North Elmham station, 6 miles N.N.W. of East lJereham, and gives name to a parish in the mid-division of the county, is in Mitford and Launditch union, East Dereham county court district, Norwich bankruptcy district, Launditch hundred and petty sessional division, South Brisley rural deanery, and .Norwich arch~ deaconry.. It had 345 inhabitants in 1881, living on- 1,201 acres, and has a rateable valu~of £1,772. The soil is mostly the property of Earl Sondes and George M. Nicholson, Esq. ; but the executors of the late J. Garwood, Esq., and Messrs. George B. Butler, George Bird, and James Coker have estates here. Brisley Green is a fine open common of 170 acres. Brisley Hall is an ancient farmhouseJ still partly encompassed by a deep moat, and having some fine specimens of carved oak. The CHURCH (St. Bartholomew) is a. large edifice, comprising nave, aisles, north porch, chancel, and lofty tower with four bells, and will seat i:105 persons.
