Human Rights in China Homework Booklet Homework Task One At home try to find 10 items in your house which were made in China. Make a list of these items in your class work jotter. Homework Task Two Imagine you are a prisoner in a Chinese Labour camp. Write a diary entry of what life is like in the camp on a typical day. You can use the information from the booklet to help form your diary entry. You could also use the experiences of Harry Wu to help you. This piece of work should be about a jotter page in length. Homework Task Three Internet Research Task! 1. Find three reasons why the Chinese government implemented the One Child Policy in the 1970’s. 2. Find three problems that the One Child Policy has caused. Complete this task in your jotter. Homework Task Four Read the following article taken from the BBC news website and answer the following questions. You will be expected to discuss your answers in class. Answer questions in full sentences. Arrests at Olympic torch relay Police arrested 35 people when clashes broke out as the Olympic torch was carried on a relay through London on its way to the 2008 games in China. Protesters are upset about the way China rules Tibet, and the way the Chinese Government treats Tibetan people. Some campaigned quietly while others tried to disrupt the torch's journey. Protests continued all day, with someone trying to snatch the torch from former Blue Peter host Konnie Huq. Police changed the route the torch was taking incase of further trouble and at some points it was carried on a bus, instead of by a runner. A protective ring of 10 Chinese flame attendants and police officers surrounded each torch carrier, with uniformed officers along the 31-mile route. Olympic heptathlon gold medallist Denise Lewis took the flame to be welcomed by Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Those taking part in the relay included 10 Olympic champions, 18 school kids and celebs like the Blue Peter's Zoe and Denise Van Outen. Long journey Double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes ran the last stage of the route and lit an Olympic cauldron in front of 5,000 spectators. The torch was lit in Olympia, Greece, last week and will go through 20 countries before being carried into the Beijing Games opening ceremony on 8 August. The Tibet situation is complicated. In March this year, people demonstrated in Tibet because they don't want it to be ruled by China, and a number of people died. 1. What disrupted the annual torch relay in 2008? 2. Chat about this story on our message board Row erupts over violence in Tibet A big row has broken out over who's to blame for the recent violence in Tibet in Asia. People have been demonstrating because they don't want Tibet to be ruled by China and several people have died. China has admitted its forces shot at protestors while trying to break up demonstrations, but claimed rioters killed 19 people in the city of Lhasa. The Tibetan government said at least 99 people had been killed in the crackdown by Chinese troops. The Dalai Lama He was born in Tibet in 1935 He began ruling Tibet at age 15! He is now exiled in India He is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists Chinese officials have accused the former head of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, of organising the violent protests in an attempt to ruin the Beijing Olympics this summer and promote Tibetan independence. It says Tibet has always been part of its territory and is continuing to increase security to prevent more protests. Spiritual leader The protests are the biggest challenge to Chinese rule in Tibet in almost 20 years. Now a leading American politician, Nancy Pelosi, is now calling for an international investigation into the violence. Ms Pelosi spoke out after talking to the Dalai Lama - who's seen by many Tibetans as their spiritual leader - in India. 1. Why are the people of Tibet protesting? 2.
