    S E C T I O N 9 A Parishes and Congregations: names no longer in use The following list updates and corrects the ‘Index of Discontinued Parish and Congregational Names’ in the previous online section of the Year Book. As before, it lists the parishes of the Church of Scotland and the congregations of the United Presbyterian Church (and its constituent denominations), the Free Church (1843–1900) and the United Free Church (1900–29) whose names have completely disappeared, largely as a consequence of union. This list is not intended to be ‘a comprehensive guide to readjustment in the Church of Scotland’. Its purpose is to assist those who are trying to identify the present-day successor of a former parish or congregation whose name is now wholly out of use and which can therefore no longer be easily traced. Where the former name has not disappeared completely, and the whereabouts of the former parish or congregation may therefore be easily established by reference to the name of some existing parish, the former name has not been included in this list. Present-day names, in the right-hand column of this list, may be found in the ‘Index of Parishes and Places’ near the end of the book. The following examples will illustrate some of the criteria used to determine whether a name should be included or not: • Where all the former congregations in a town have been united into one, as in the case of Melrose or Selkirk, the names of these former congregations have not been included; but in the case of towns with more than one congregation, such as Galashiels or Hawick, the names of the various constituent congregations are listed.

    ( 433 ) XXXII.—Geological Account of Roxburghshire. By DAVID MILNE, Esq., F.R.S.E. ••\ [Read 5th December 1842 and 9th January 1843.] IT seems extraordinary, that no one should have undertaken a geological sur- vey of Roxburghshire, more especially as the counties to the east and west of it have been examined, and accounts of their formations were published some years ago. It cannot be from its uninteresting character, that the intervening dis- trict has been neglected; for it presents as great a variety of apparently distinct formations, as there are in the adjoining counties of Dumfries and Berwick; and some of these have long been the special subjects of speculation and controversy among geologists. The British Association, in the Report of its Meeting held at Cambridge in 1833, propounded the following questions for geological inquiry. " 1. Is the red sandstone of Kelso contemporaneous with that of Salisbury Crags; and what relation do they respectively bear to the adjacent coal-fields ? " 2. What is the exact northern boundary of the coal-field of the River Liddell f " 3. What are the relations as to age of the two series of whin-rocks, one running north-east along the Liddell in Roxburghshire, the other south-east in the neighbourhood of Melrose and Jedburgh f These questions show the opinion entertained by the Geological Section of the Association, as to the interesting geological character of Roxburghshire.     Roxburgh Mains Rent Review This Note summarises the main issues considered by the Court in the Roxburgh Mains rent review case. A copy of the full decision of the Court is also attached. The Scottish Land Court was asked to fix the rent for Roxburgh Mains Farm (“the farm”) as at Whitsunday 2009. The case had been sisted on the tenant’s motion pending the outcome of the appeal to the Court of Session in the Moonzie Farm rent review case. The farm is a mixed arable and livestock farm extending to 634.57 acres. The land is predominantly grade 3(1) in terms of the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute classification, with some grade 3(2). Part of the grade 3(1) is shown as having a soil restriction and all of the grade 3(2) has a wetness restriction. The existing rent was agreed in 1999 at £27,500. In terms of the application as lodged the landlords proposed a rent of £38,300. Following the Moonzie Farm case their final submission was that the rent should be fixed at £67,876 (£106.96/acre). The tenant originally asked for the rent to be fixed at the existing level, but in the final submission argued that it should be fixed at £30,593 (£48.21/acre). The decision of the Court was to fix the rent at £48,982 (£77.19/acre over the whole farm, and £78.84/farmable acre). The evidence included the open market letting of a comparable farm on a 15 year Limited Duration Tenancy (LDT) together with evidence of negotiated rents for 1991 Act tenancies at five other farms.

Bonnie Teviotdale John Halliday A circular walk through the heart of Teviotdale, linking the three villages of Crailing, Eckford and Nisbet. Passing through an area rich in history, plants and wildlife, the walk includes some glorious views. Just over 12.5 Miles (20 Km) long with a total ascent of just under 900 feet (270m). 1 Parts of the route are on the St Cuthbert’s Way and the Borders Abbeys Way and the way marking signs will have these indicators on them. However, in addition, the Crailing, Eckford and Nisbet Paths way marker will appear on significant indicator posts. Although the whole walk is circular, it is possible to walk parts of it. It divides easily into three stages and this is how it is laid out in this booklet. The route description in this booklet starts in Eckford and runs clockwise.
