Jazz Collection: Django Bates - britische Wundertüte Dienstag, 13. Oktober 2020, 21.00 – 22.00 Uhr, SRF 2 Kultur Samstag, 17. This report gives an overview of the artists and projects which have been developed in 2018, supported by The Francis W Reckitt Arts Trust and Hawkwood. In the last year, we have worked with individual artists as well as groups of artists who have come together. We have welcomed a broad range of creative people from diverse backgrounds working on extraordinary projects and have partnered with regional and national organisations. 109 artists supported 41 musicians 49 devised theatre practitioners 4 dancers 6 writers 2 costume designers 3 puppeteers 2 visual artists 1 rapper 1 cross disciplinary artist 14 new works created 4 national tours In addition to the artists mentioned in this report, we also welcomed five former Mount Pleasant artists. We delivered the programme by working with excellent organisations known for supporting new work including Strike A Light, Bristol Old Vic, The Royal Court Theatre and The London Theatre Consortium. Approximately 14 new works were created with many groups coming together for the first time. Some works were at a more advanced stage and four of these went on to be performed nationally including performances at The Cheltenham Music festival, Strike A Light and performances in London via English Touring Opera amongst many others.

  • MUSIC from out THERE, in HERE: 25 YEARS of the LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL Emma Webster and George Mckay
MUSIC FROM OUT THERE, IN HERE: 25 YEARS OF THE LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL Emma Webster and George McKay Published in Great Britain in 2017 by University of East Anglia, Norwich NR4 7TJ, UK as part of the Impact of Festivals project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, under the Connected Communities programme. impactoffestivals.wordpress.com Acknowledgements This book is an output of the Arts and Humanities Research Council collaborative project The Impact of Festivals (2015-16), funded under the Connected Communities Programme. The authors are grateful for the research council’s support. At the University of East Anglia, thanks to project administrators Rachel Daniel and Jess Knights, for organising events, picture research, travel and liaison, and really just making it all happen smoothly. Thanks to Rhythm Changes and CHIME European jazz research project teams for, once again, keeping it real. Some of the ideas were discussed at jazz and improvised music festivals and conferences in London, Birmingham, Cheltenham, Edinburgh, San Sebastian, Europe Jazz Network Wroclaw and Ljubljana, and Amsterdam. Some of the ideas and interview material have been published in the proceedings of the first Continental Drifts conference, Edinburgh, July 2016, in a paper called ‘The role of the festival producer in the development of jazz in Europe’ by Emma Webster. George McKay has drawn on this research for a chapter called ‘Festivals’ in Francesco Martinelli (ed.) The History of European Jazz: The Music, Musicians and Audience in Context (Equinox, 2018). At Serious and the EFG London Jazz Festival, thanks to John Cumming, David Jones, Claire Whitaker; Ope Igbinyemi, Martel Ollerenshaw and Amy Pearce; and other Serious staff members past and present, particularly Louise Dennison and Piers Mason, for all their help in facilitating the research.

  • Valuing British Music - Jazz Futures Transcript
Valuing British music - Jazz futures Transcript Date: Tuesday, 24 April 2007 - 12:00AM VALUING BRITISH MUSIC - JAZZ FUTURES Professor Norton York Around 10 years ago I found myself in the old Vortex club in Stoke Newington, in the north of London. I was there at a sound check to meet a guitarist about some teaching work, and there playing in his band was one of my most talented former students, saxophonist Denys Baptiste. This was before his Mercury prize nominated album and after leaving the Guildhall jazz course. My teaching involvement with Denys had involved organising for Tim Whitehead to tutor him on sax, and getting him some gigs at the Brentford Watermans Arts Centre. In any case, it was great to see him and I asked him how his career was going. He updated me and then said 'but hey wouldn't it have been great if you had told us all how poor we'd be when we started work as jazz musicians?' Denys had been on a new course which I ran at what is now part of Brunel University, really designed as a foundation course for rock and pop musicians. My reply was that actually I had taught a course - aimed at the pop and rock market - all about how musicians made money, But two things had probably got in the way of Denys using that information at the time. One was that Denys - like many young musicians - chose back then not to engage with much enthusiasm with the business side of music. That will never change completely, but I believe that young musicians are now increasingly realising the essential need to understand how their career chances may be best achieved by managing their business affairs properly and actively.
