Chap. 12 to Reader
Tink A pi: Harry Roesli, M usic, and Politics in Bandung, Indonesia Adam D. Tyson' On June 5, 2009, a memorial concert was held at the Institute of Technology in Bandung (Institut Teknologi Bandung, hereafter ITB). Celebrated was the lifework of Djauhar Zaharsjah Fahrudin Roesli, popularly known as Harry Roesli. Harry Roesli was considered to be at the forefront of the so-called tradisi baru, or "new tradition," of Indonesian artists committed to experimentation with traditional culture in order to address contemporary society.1 2 For a variety of reasons, however, Roesli did not enjoy the level of popular success that other tradisi baru artists achieved, particularly playwright Willibrordus Surendra Broto Rendra (hereafter W. S. Rendra), director Putu Wijaya, novelist Remy Sylado, and musicians Guruh Soekarno Putra, Franki Raden, Leo Kristi, Slamet Abdul Syukur, Jack Lesmana, Nano Suratno, and, later, Iwan Gunawan.3 1 "Titik Api" in my title is borrowed from the name of one of Roesli's music albums and can be translated "Point of Fire." My sincere gratitude is expressed to the Roesli family for their patience and generosity in providing me access to the Harry Roesli archive, as well as their willingness to discuss with me many of the finer points regarding his artistic career. I am also grateful to Michael Bodden, Barbara Hatley, Indra Ridwan, R. Anderson Sutton, Jeremy Wallach, and Andrew N. Weintraub for their critical comments on earlier versions of this article, which has been significantly improved as a result of their insights and notes. With that said, any remaining shortcomings are solely my responsibility. -

Summer Is Heating Up,The United Folk Festival Arrives in Westerly
The Roots Report: An Interview with Phil Ehart of Kansas I spoke with Phil Ehart, drummer and manager of the band Kansas about the band and their upcoming show on July 27th at the Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket. Phil Ehart: Hi, this is Phil… John Fuzek: Hi, this is John from Motif Magazine, how are you? Phil: I’m well, John, thank you, how are you? JF: Thanks for agreeing to do an interview PE: Sure, thanks for having me! JF: So, where are in you? In Kansas? (snicker) PE: No, the band is based in Atlanta, we haven’t been based in Kansas for over 30 years now, we’re still Kansas boys but we just live somewhere else JF: I read about your beginnings with a band called White Clover. Can you tell me about it? PE: That was a band that I started. It was sort of a late 60’s kind of a club band, cover band, that is where I spent most of my teen years-playing with White Clover JF: Was there any progressive rock there? PE: No, not really, it was just a local band JF: I read about that and Kansas 1 and Kansas 2 PE: Yeah, that can give you a headache reading that stuff! It’s all over the place JF: Yes, all the personnel changes! I see that you have Ronnie Platt as the lead vocalist of your band now, he was a former member of Shooting Star, and I always thought that they had a similar sound to Kansas. -

Judas 19 Text
Judas 19 24/01/2007 10:02 pm Page 1 Judas! from Inside A Prune Welcome to issue 19,the Modern Times special, and thanks to all who wrote in with their thoughts on the album. We offer a variegated selection here of the many responses. So many indeed that I abandoned my own review, which may be for the best as it may not have been enthusiastic enough for most of your palates. I’ll use this double editorial to briefly explain why, (especially as I am not good at saying ‘goodbye’ so want to put it off as long as I can); although I did start off in the days prior to the full release defending the album. Or to put it more accurately, defending the pre-release teaser of ‘Thunder on the Mountain’against a stiffly negative welcome. It was not that I was knocked out by the song, but that it was being judged in isolation and my thought process was that ‘Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum’ would have sounded very weak in isolation but performs an important introductory function on “Love and Theft” so ‘Thunder on the Mountain’ should not be prejudged out of context. In addition it had the outrageously brilliant rhyme of ‘sons of bitches’ and ‘orphanages’ which I trust is original as it is difficult to imagine anyone other than Dylan thinking of it. It is not just a clever couplet but a deeply meaningful one as wars increase the number of orphanages needed, which in turn are a rich picking ground for future armies. -
