In accordance with its mission, FURJ continues to disseminate a diverse body of undergraduate research spanning the spectrum of the academic world from the physical sciences, to the social sciences, and to the humanities. We feel that the breadth of the third volume attests to the varied and sophisticated interests of Fordham undergraduates, and we are honored to showcase the fruits of our peers’ academic labors. Furthermore, we are proud to play a role in the University’s ongoing dedication to undergraduate research. As you peruse these pages, please take a moment to admire the successes of your students and peers. Besides the authors published in this volume, a number of students are recognized in our select list of undergraduate research accomplishments. In addition, we have shared the names of the talented and dedicated faculty who were nominated for this year’s Faculty Mentor Award. We wish to extend our thanks to them and to all the faculty members who share their passion and guidance with undergraduate researchers at Fordham. This year was one of great change for the Journal. In the first place, you’ll notice that the Journal itself is smaller in size. We decided to change many of the elements of design in the hope of creating a cleaner and more professional layout for our readers. Besides this change in its appearance, FURJ started in September with an executive board composed almost of entirely of new members. As editors-in-chief, we have admired and appreciated the way in which these individuals have stepped up to the challenge of leading a staff and taken responsibility for their respective sections of the Journal. Finally, Xavier Montecel, FCRH ’12, joined us as the interim director of the Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal. We are thankful for the gracious assistance and dedication he has demonstrated in this role Of course, this edition of FURJ could not have come into existence if not for the backing of a group of very dedicated individuals. We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to Dr. Michael Latham, dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill, for his continued and unwavering support of this project. We would also like to the thank all of the members of the FCRH Dean’s Office, especially Ms. Dorothy Riely and Dr. Robert Parmach, not only for sharing their work space with FURJ but also for sharing great times and fond memories. Finally, we would like to thank Dr. Michelle Bata. The successes we have achieved in the three years since FURJ’s inception are the result of the enthusiasm, encouragement, and guidance that she so generously and tirelessly shared with us during her tenure as our administrative director. Alex Prager: Farewell, Work Holiday Parties November 21, 2020–January 3, 2021 Los Angeles–based artist Alex Prager is known for making photographs and short films embellished with Technicolor fantasy but grounded in the pains and pleasures of the everyday. In this installation, Prager satirizes a specific part of working life, drawing on pop culture tropes to create a simulation of office holiday parties. The artist animates figurative sculptures with costumes, makeup, props, and sound, and places them in recognizable office-party situations, creating a strange yet celebratory scene that can be experienced in the round. “Through my work I’ve been able to process things in the world that I’m questioning or struggling with,” says Prager, “which is one of the many reasons I feel this piece is important for the current social climate. With the unheralded arrival of the Facebook posse and Twitter mob into the back-alleys of traditional business marketing territory, Small- and Medium-Businesses (SMBs) can no longer ignore the lure of new business opportunities – or the accompanying challenges lurking within the shadows of the social networking underworld. PLAYING THE TECH ROULETTE Here we are in 2010. We are no longer in the slumps, with various components of the economy on the upward trajectory to help alleviate our wounds suffered during the recent downturn. Over the past quarters, SMBs have been held ransom by the same cost-cutting chains which threatened to rupture them further under the simultaneous strains of escalating competition. However, with economic rejuvenation now on the cards, “cautious optimism” is the secret code being whispered around along with a new willingness to spend, as excited SMB owners have their fingers ready on the trigger lest that opportune moment they’ve all been waiting for – finally arrives. However, all hell is not about to break loose, as the SMB owners have been biting on the recession bullet long enough to know the importance of maintaining a vigilant eye over their shoulders. As history has shown, the technology roulette is certainly not for the faint-hearted, as we have witnessed the quick demise of many a “next big things” as they failed to perform up to first impressions, before being relegated down the ranks to nothing but another famous four-letter word –“hype”.

In this study, we investigated how a sense of virtual community is formed in the online environments where users communicate and build interpersonal relationships. We adopted a questionnaire survey method, selecting Wretch users as the study participants. We analyzed 196 valid questionnaires using structural equation modeling. The results revealed that a positive relationship existed between social presence and sense of virtual community and between naturalness (an element of social presence) and membership status, community support, and sense of attachment (elements of sense of virtual community). Objectivity (an element of social presence) only exhibited a positive relationship with membership status and community support (elements of sense of virtual community). According to these results, we offered a reference for future studies.   • JANE AUSTEN's SCRIPT of SISTERHOOD Each of Jane
    ABSTRACT THE PROBLEM OF FEMALE RESERVE: JANE AUSTEN’S SCRIPT OF SISTERHOOD Each of Jane Austen’s novels looks at sisterhood from a different angle, exploring varying versions of sisterhood that all point to its indisputable necessity in the lives of women. At the same time, however, Austen illustrates that female reserve frequently prevents sister relationships from reaching their full potential. Sisterly reserve is often tied to romantic interests, as women succumb to cultural pressure to hide their feelings at all costs. This thesis analyzes the complexities of the sister relationships in Austen’s six novels, tracing the struggles with silence that often result in a temporary or even permanent breakdown of female community. Through her portrayals of sisters, Austen also raises questions about moral development and female isolation, indicating that strong sisterhoods cultivate greater moral awareness, and that women without sisters still benefit from the female communities they create. The complete script that surfaces from an examination of all her novels argues that sisters and women consistently experience stronger female communities and greater participation in the world of rationality and meaning when they are able to overcome these instances of silence and jointly negotiate their experiences.     “He to defend: I to punish”: Silence and the Duel in t Sense and Sensibility :Li VINCE BREWTON Vince Brewton (email: [email protected]) is Assistant Professor of English at the University of North Alabama. He has written for The Southern Quarterly and The Continuum Encyclopedia of American Literature. His ongoing research reflects on the relationship between identity and violence. A t the heart of Sense and Sensibility we find a little-noted duel, an affair of honor conducted between Colonel Brandon and Willoughby, two of the three male principals in the novel. The duel, though heavy with significance for the novel, is interestingly underemphasized in the text itself and largely unacknowledged in critical discussion. A Regency duel is an example of what Peter Gay calls “the cultivation of hatred,” i.e., the sub- limation of raw aggression as well as the deliberately nurtured expression of that same resentment.1 The “hatred” sufficient to provoke a duel arises over Willoughby’s seduction of Brandon’s ward, Eliza, and the duel exists for the reader only because its participants engage in a secondary discur- sive “duel” on the “site” of Elinor Dashwood, each confiding in her his grievance and his justification for his conduct. While the duel is never revealed to us in its details directly or indi- rectly, it is significant as an emblem of the power relations informing the plot of Sense and Sensibility. I want to place the unconsidered duel within the framework of power relations in the work while at the same time undertaking to read the novel in light of the duel’s significance and deter- mine the extent to which it alters or affirms our approach to the text.

Through a wide range of mediums from paintings, sketches, photographs, sculptures to mixed media installations, the artist unveils his open-ended interpretation of life. The Gala, which recognized the artistic excellence and contributions to Asian art of the three Asia Arts Game Changers, Cai Guo-Qiang, Nalini Malani, and Yoshitomo Nara, also included a benefit dinner and auction. It also marked the opening of Art Basel Hong Kong and gathered notable collectors, artists, gallerists around the art world, as well as Asia Society trustees and patrons. The celebratory evening included a cocktail reception and benefit auction, synchronized online and offline, of works by world-renowned artists. Highlights from the benefit auction included unique works by world-renowned artists Cao Fei, Mariko Mori, Shahzia Sikander, and Zhan Wang. Cai commented on receiving the award, “I had a solo exhibition at the Asia Society Museum in 2003, and had a site visit when the current Asia Society Hong Kong Center was still under construction… I have long been associated with Asia Society, Asia, and the arts!
