The Great Rolling Stones Redlands Bust
THE GREAT ROLLING STONES REDLANDS BUST By David Bartley ‘Naked Girl at Stone’s Party’ On Sunday the 12th of February 1967 one of the mothers of all battles of that turbulent and sadly maligned decade was set in motion. In one corner the emerging hippy movement; in the other, the forces of conventional middle-class morality. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (then styled ‘Richard’) of the Rolling Stones were arrested for drug offences. Three months later, Jagger and Richards were tried and sentenced to three months’ and a year’s imprisonment respectively. Mick for possession of amphetamines (sold legally as travel sickness pills in Italy, where they were purchased), Keith for allowing cannabis to be smoked on his premises – Redlands, in West Sussex. They were Quickly released on appeal, but these absurdly vindictive and disproportionate sentences caused an uproar. The new Establishment of the ‘counter-culture’ – including The Beatles and The Who - rallied behind the two Stones and then, remarkably, so did The Establishment. The editor of the Times, William Rees-Mogg, risked a contempt of court charge by publishing an editorial decrying the evident unfairness of the sentences. Common sense ultimately prevailed: matters were Quietly arranged so that the boys quickly won their appeal. The plot to crush the longhairs, with their drugs and their loose sexual attitudes had backfired – spectacularly. Far from penitent pariahs, Mick and Keith were now Promethean heroes, Oscar Wildes for their times. So just how did the NCO class of the old Establishment – the News of The World, the minor judiciary, the police - make such a mess of what was meant to be an exemplary spanking for the Stones and their louche admirers? Here is the countdown to calamity. -

The Wonder Years Episode & Music Guide
The Wonder Years Episode & Music Guide “What would you do if I sang out of tune … would you stand up and walk out on me?" 6 seasons, 115 episodes and hundreds of great songs – this is “The Wonder Years”. This Episode & Music Guide offers a comprehensive overview of all the episodes and all the songs played during the show. The episode guide is based on the first complete TWY episode guide which was originally posted in the newsgroup rec.arts.tv in 1993. It was compiled by Kirk Golding with contributions by Kit Kimes. It was in turn based on the first TWY episode guide ever put together by Jerry Boyajian and posted in the newsgroup rec.arts.tv in September 1991. Both are used with permission. The music guide is the work of many people. Shane Hill and Dawayne Melancon corrected and inserted several songs. Kyle Gittins revised the list; Matt Wilson and Arno Hautala provided several corrections. It is close to complete but there are still a few blank spots. Used with permission. Main Title & Score "With a little help from my friends" -- Joe Cocker (originally by Lennon/McCartney) Original score composed by Stewart Levin (episodes 1-6), W.G. Chapter One: The Emic Sociology of New Edge Celebrating Augmentation and Dissociation In the first editorial of the magazine Mondo 2000, founded in 1989 by Ken Goffman (1952) and Allison Kennedy in Berkeley, the editors describe the magazine as "New Edge, not New Age". As Goffman told me in an interview, with the term ‘New Edge’ he wanted to articulate a simultaneous embrace and rejection of New Age.21 Informed by the understanding that New Age is largely about the rejection of high-tech, the term New Edge expressed the dedication of the magazine creators and editors to explore New Age spirituality via ‘edgy’ technoscientific concepts and products. In this first chapter, I seek to understand how 'technology' and 'New Age spirituality' are made relevant to each other from the perspective of New Edge. What is it about 'New Age spirituality' that invites New Edgers to relate it to 'technology', and what is it about 'technology' that New Edgers deem related to 'spirituality'? And what kinds of 'technology' and what kinds of 'spirituality' are thereby related? Without seeking to answer this question in an all-encompassing way, in this chapter I focus in particular on the gnostic epistemology of New Age and the way this gnosticism is made to correlate with high-tech. -
