RIVER RUN IS,GOD RACE NO. ES Each year we manage the River Run, we learn new ways to improve the race. This year we learned to plan a race for a day with near perfect roadracing weath~r. Sunny, breezy weather in the mid-50s helps make the problems that crop up during the race much easier to deal with. We did have problems this year with the awards ceremony. In some cases, awards were given to the wrong people. If you are due a trophy but did not receive one at the awards ceremony, we will deliver your trophy to you. The Top-Ten T-shirts have been ordered. You can tell whether you will receive a Top-Ten T-shirt by computing the top 10% of the runners in your age division (rounded up to the nearest full number). To the top 10% T-shirt winners, congratulations--you should receive your T-shirt in the mail in a few weeks. It is impossible to mention all those who deserve our thanks for their contributions to the River Run without running the risk of omitting many of the 600 race workers. Special thanks, however, should be given to our sponsors, The Florida Times-Union and Jacksonville Journal and the Barnett Banks for their generous support, and to the City of Jacksonville and its various agencies for their unbelievable cooperation __ and assistance._ Thanks _should also go to the Offh:e of tITe-S1'ferTf"f-ai1Cr each-po11ce officer and reserve officer working with us. It is impossible to have a large roadrace without the great traffic control we h¥d at the River Run. Finally, thanks to the people of·Jacksonville who turned out in greater numbers than ever to cheer all of the runners and to lend their aid and support. --- ---- -- -- ----- -------- Those who ran missed a great spectator's race. Up front, as you can see from the photographs included in th~ race results, Bob Hodge and Benji Durden took early control of the race. They stayed shoulder-to shoulder virtually the entire race. It was not until approximately the 9 mile point that Hodge opened the lead that ultimately gave him the margin of victory. Among the women, Jennifer White and Patti Lyons exchanged leads several times until the 6 mile point when White began pulling away. Lyons finished second with Jayne Surdyka closing in for a close third. Congratulations to the overall individual winners, J ennif·er Hhi te and Bob Hodge, to the Jacksonville winners, Pat Sher and Mike Wolcholtz, and to the overall fastest women's team, the Racing South Track Team from Tallahassee, and to the overall fastest men'r team, Athletic Attic from Gainesville. The 1981 River Run 15,000 will be staged on Saturday, March 14. We hope to see you again next year.
