Dear Educating for Careers Conference Attendees:

Welcome to the Educating for Careers Conference: Focusing Education on the Future. This three-day professional development forum once again melds annual conferences of the Career Pathways Consortia and the California Partnership Academies (CPA), to bring you the best in Career Technical Education (CTE).

Now more than ever, we need to ensure that our students receive a quality education that fully integrates rigorous curriculum with 21st century career options. Only then will they have the best opportunity for academic and real-world success. Given our current state economy, it is also critical that we prepare all students to master the technical requirements needed in a modernized society so they can help our state and their own families prosper once again.

The CPA concept remains a vital link to help teachers achieve this critical mission, and assist those students who may be disillusioned by the lack of a clear connection between school work and the future. The reform model is structured as a school-within-a-school: small learning communities focused on a particular career theme. Teachers collaborate with business and post-secondary partners to ensure continuity between school and work.

CTE engages all students in a dynamic and comprehensive blending of career and academic knowledge and skills necessary to compete in the marketplace, and helps them develop a deep interest and passion for a subject area that may have been invisible to them before. CTE produces responsible and employable individuals who can make invaluable contributions to our shared future.

At school, students also will remain engaged and focused. With this newfound awareness about what lies beyond the gates of school, they take more interest in their studies because they know where the path will lead, and ultimately will begin to get better grades. This is especially important for those students who have wandered off that path and may be headed in the wrong direction.

You are the educators who can help them stay the course, and expose them to the wonders of CTE and the bountiful opportunities that lie ahead in their journey to success. I value your wonderful contributions to this important mission, and hope you find extreme value and inspiration in the sessions ahead.

Sincerely,

Tom Torlakson
