General Characteristics of the District This district was carved out from West Singhbhum district in 2001. The district comprises of 9 blocks: Seraikela, Kharsawan, Gamharia, Kuchai, Ichagarh, Nimdih, Chandil, Rajnagar and the newly formed, Kukru.The district has a population density of 390 inhabitants per square kilometre (1,000 /sq mi) Its population growth rate over the decade 2001- 2011 was 25.28 %. Saraikela Kharsawan has a sex ratio of 958 females for every 1000 males and a literacy rate of 68.85 %. There are 142 villages in the district. The district is well known for Seraikela Chhau, one of the three distinctive styles of the chhau dance.It is one of the 24 districts in Jharkhand currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF). The district is currently a part of the Red Corridor. 1.1 Location & Geographical Area: This district is surrounded by the district East Singhbhum in its East, West Singhbhum in its West, Ranchi district and Purulia district of West Bengal in its North and Mayurbhunj, kyonjhar of sundergarh district of Odisha in its South. This district is spread over an area of 281544.79 Hector (2815.45 Sq.Km) 1.2 Topography: 220 29’ 26”and23009’34” N latitude and 850 30’14”and 86015’24” E longitude. Height from Sea-level: 243.93 Mts. 1.3 Availability of Minerals: Kyanite, Soap-Stone, lime Stone, China Clay etc.; PRODUCTION OF MINERAL 2010-11 S.NO. Khunti (shared with Khunti district) There are three Vidhan Sabha constituencies in this district: Ichagarh, Seraikela and Kharsawan.
