Anchal has now become the unit of admInistration for revenue, development and other administrative purposes. The jurisdictions of police stations are also being largely readjusted to coincide with the Anchal-cum-Development Blocks. 'I'hus, for the Census of 1961, the basic data have been presented with Anchal as the unit. At the same time, Anchal maps showing the constituent villages and certain important details have been pre'Pared in the scale of 1" =1 mile. Since no independent survey was done for this purpose, the Revenue Thana maps were used for preparing the original tracings showing the village boundaries. Delineation of other details, lettering, etc., had to be done afresh and an attempt was made to bring the information up to date (i. e., up to 1st March, 1961 which was the point of reference for 1961 Census) as far as possible. After completing this process, the newly prepared maps were got reduced to demy-quarto size, by photographic process, for being reproduced in the District Census Handbooks. This i~ perhaps the first time that such maps are being made available and the preparation of Anchal maps, both on 1" =1 mile scale as well as on the reduced scale, can be justly claimed among the major achievements of the Census of 1961 in Bihar. In view of the likely usefulness of these maps to administration, 250 off-prints were taken while printing for the District Census Handbooks. These are now being presented in four volumes, one for each Commissioner's Division. In addition to Anchal maps, a State map showing Anchal boundaries and administrative maps for each of the districts within the division have also been incorporated in each volume. A limited number of copies of these volumes are being issued for offioial use only. The preparation of Anchal maps was made possible mainly because of the keen interest and helpful attitude of the State Government which not only placed all relevant materials at my disposal but also agreed to meet the entire cost of the scheme. For all this I am greatly indebted to it. I must also record my grate fulness to Shri M. P. Singh, Deputy Director of Surveys and Land Records who not only deputed some of his most experienced staff for this work but took personal interest in it and also helped with his technical knowledge and supervisiQn.
