Summary of Building Description The two-and-one-half story buff brick mansion, resting on an elevated basement, fronts along Second Avenue, across from Coeur d’Alene Park in the Browne’s Addition neighborhood. Sited on a corner lot, and set back from the street, the grand mansion presents a lavish and imposing appearance. An eclectic mix of stylistic elements, richly detailed and layered, suggests a Mediterranean influence. Rising from the sandstone foundation and porch wall, the front façade of buff-colored brick is characterized by a central salient composed of two levels of porches over a massive round sandstone arch, the second level porches flanking the salient, asymmetrically elevated corner turrets, and a red “tile” hipped roof. A brick portico with an arched sandstone passageway projects from the east façade of the building and provides a second entrance. Brick chimneys, at the ridgeline, mark the ends of the roof. The property also includes the former coach house that is along the rear (north side) of the mansion. The coach house is two stories in height and composed of the same buff brick and red metal tile roof as the mansion. Building Description The front façade is essentially symmetrical save for the extension of the east turret to the third story and the projection of the portico from the east façade. Centered on the façade is the round arch of the main entry. Within a central salient that projects from the building’s mass to the plane established by the foundation and porch wall, the molded sepia sandstone arch is supported by sandstone pillars that rest on grade. The Clark Mansion, constructed in 1898, was built in the heyday of Spokane’s growth when wealth from lumber, mining, and railroad development fueled Spokane’s economy. The exuberant building is significant under Category A as a manifestation of this period, from the late 1890s to the first two decades of the 1900s, and the group that left a significant architectural legacy to the city. During this period grand mansions were built in Browne’s Addition and the South Hill, and fine office buildings rose in Spokane’s downtown commercial core, all financed by the newly acquired wealth of Spokane’s turn of the century capitalists. Built by mine developer and financier Patrick “Patsy” Clark, who with his family, resided in the mansion until his death in 1915, the building is significant under Category B for its association with Clark. Patrick Clark was one of the group of millionaires that built many of Spokane’s finest turn of the century buildings from the late 1890s through the first two decades of the 1900s. Patrick Clark was a notable character who exemplified this group, and was recognized as one of Spokane’s prominent citizens. His activities, from his rich gold discoveries in Republic to his quarantine in New York City, were regularly reported in Spokane’s news of the day. Finally, the building is significant under Category C as an outstanding example of the work of master Spokane architect Kirtland K. Cutter. Broad concrete steps provide access through the arch portal to the porch and front entry door. Above the arch is a three-bay porch divided by four wooden pilasters. Supported by pedestals with wooden balusters in between, the pilasters taper slightly to the corbelled wooden architrave that supports the projecting eaves of the intermediate roof. Topping the porch is a hipped dormer with an open porch that is recessed behind the second story roof

    Kirtland Kelsey 1860-1939 Cutter he Arts and Crafts movement was a powerful, worldwide force in art and architecture. Beautifully designed furniture, decorative arts and homes were in high demand from consumers in booming new cities. Local, natural materials of logs, shingles and stone were plentiful in the west and creative architects were needed. One of them was TKirtland Kelsey Cutter, who worked in Spokane, Seattle and California. His imagination reflected the artistic values of that era — from rustic chapels and distinctive homes to glorious public spaces of great beauty. Cutter was born in Cleveland in 1860, the grandson of a distinguished naturalist. A love of nature was an essential part of Kirtland’s work and he integrated garden design and natural, local materials into his plans. He studied painting and sculp- ture in New York and spent several years traveling and studying in Europe. This exposure to art and culture abroad influenced his taste and the style of his architecture. The rural buildings of Europe inspired him throughout his career. One style associated with Cutter is the Swiss chalet, which he used for his own home in Spokane. Inspired by the homes of the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, it featured deep eaves that extended out from the roofline. The inside was pure Arts and Crafts, with a rustic, tiled stone fireplace, stained glass windows and elegant woodwork. Its simplicity contrasted with the grand homes many of his clients requested. The railroads brought people to the Northwest looking for opportunities in mining, logging and real estate. My great grandfather, Victor Dessert, came from France and settled in Spokane in the 1880s.

    KIRTLAND CUTTER: Architect in the Land of Promise. By Henry Mathews. (Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1998. 448 pp. $60.00.) Reviewed by Louise H. Ivers. Henry Matthews' book about Kirtland Cutter gives insight into the work of a prominent western architect whose career has been previously neglected by historians. According to the author, "One major aim of this monograph is to establish him as a western architect whose contribution should not be overlooked by those studying American architecture as a whole." (p. 4) Certainly Matthews' research proves that Cutter's work, although not avant-garde, fits directly into the mainstream of American design during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His buildings are derivative of period styles, similar to those of Myron Hunt, whose important role in southern California has already been defined by an exhibition and illustrated catalogue of his structures. In one of Cutter's few written statements he revealed his philosophy of architecture: "Modern Domestic architecture has sought to assemble the ideals of every age and Nation, and adapt them to the enormously expanded tastes and requirements of modern civilization. From the traditions and customs of all ages, we have claimed the best." (p. 112) Cutter, like Hunt, designed houses, hotels, and a college campus. He was a pioneer in the Mission Revival style when he built the W. J. C. Wakefield house in 1897-98 in Spokane, Washington, probably the first one in this mode in the state. He modified and simplified the concepts of this type of architecture when he moved to Long Beach, California in 1923 and began designing homes in the new Palos Verdes development in what became known as the Mediterranean or California style.

    As promised at the February 18th Society program, Tim Tweten, restaurant owner, celebrated Burs 62nd birthday on March 21st, serving cake and 62¢ coffee all day. The staff and patrons alike are anxious to see the results of the remodeling of the restaurant planned later this year, including the kitchen, main dining area and meeting room. It’s all part of Tim’s plans to upgrade his six-restaurant business. Jeanne McGinnis Emmons, the original owner of The Lakewood Coffee Shop that morphed into Burs in the 1970s, explained how she and her late husband, Al, wanted to provide a place for the “working man” to have a place of his own. Although many residents patronized The Terrace at the Colonial Center, The Lakewood Coffee Shop was the spot that appealed to many patrons who wanted something not quite as upscale as the Terrace. The two restaurants were, briefly, the only ones in the area. During the intervening years Burs remains a local favorite—some patrons have their own spot at the counter—one designed with a special “curve” to accommodate one patron’s “girth”. Talk about making your clientele comfortable! Today the banquet room, just off the main dining area, is the setting for Lakewood United and Lakewood Chamber of Commerce gatherings. Take time to note the replica of the DeHavilland Seaplane that hangs from the ceiling. That’s another Lakewood story. Burs, on Steilacoom Boulevard, is one of half a dozen long-time area restaurants that Tweten owns, and the one in Lakewood is especially popular with his patrons.

  • Kirtland Cutter: Architect in the Land of Promise
    Henry Matthews Kirtland Cutter: Architect in the Land of Promise Seattle and London: University of Washington Press in association with Eastern Washington Historical Society, Spokane, 1998, x + 438 pp, 265 b/w illus. $60.00, ISBN 0-295-97609-8. In 1889, following a disastrous fire, but bolstered by a gold rush and a thriving agriculturally based economy, Spokane, Washington, was growing. Its business elite were anxious to rebuild in a way that could boost the town's reputation and prominence, and a whole group of enterprising builders and architects were ready to respond to Spokane's booming industrialized and mercantile needs. Into this promising context came Kirtland Kelsey Cutter (1860-1939), an architect who was descended from two well- educated and well-placed families in Cleveland. Using his innate talents and art training, he began an architecture firm and developed it into one of the foremost offices in the Pacific Northwest. By the end of his career (which ultimately carried him to southern California), Cutter had designed several hundred buildings that helped establish Spokane as a place to rival Seatde and Portland in the quality of its architecture. Henry Matthews, an architect and architectural historian who teaches at Washington State University in Pullman, has brought together archival material from Cutter's office, along with interviews with clients and associates, to produce this solid book about Cutter's life and work. Organized chronologically, and well illustrated, the story begins with an account of Cutter's ancestors-explorers, naturalists, and business people-and continues through his own education as a painter.
