He is one of the leading floristicians in Papuasian botany and is widely known in professional circles for wide-ranging publications in vascular plant taxonomy and conservation. His 25-year career as a resident scientist in Papua New Guinea began in 1988 at the Wau Ecology Institute (subsequently transferring to the PNG National Herbarium in 1992) and included numerous affiliations as a research associate or consultant with academic institutions, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and corporate entities. Despite taking early retirement at age 57, botanical work has continued to the present on a selective basis. He has served as the lead botanist on at least 38 multidisciplinary surveys and has 97 peer-reviewed publications on the Malesian flora. Kyle Armstrong, Specialised Zoological Pty. Recent observations of the critically endangered Sulphurea subspecies of Yellow-crested Cockatoo Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park SE Sulawesi, Indonesia By DUDI NANDIKA, S. Si, Department of Biology, As-Syafi'iyah Islamic University, Jakarta, Indonesia The Lesser Sulphur-crested (or Yellow-crested) Cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea) is an endangered Indonesian species and one of only five cockatoo species represented on Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). The species is comprised of four generally accepted races (subspecies): parvula, abbotti, Photo: WPT citronocristata and sulphurea .The latter is endemic only to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi (formerly Celebes). Extant studies suggest that although some small populations may exist elsewhere, the remaining cockatoos are mostly confined to two locations in SE Sulawesi: Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park (RAWNP) and Buton Island, and a single location in central Sulawesi (Pasoso Island). Of these, RAWNP is clearly the most significant. RAWNP is unique in having 7 ecosystem types, that is: tidal mudflats, mangrove forest, wooded savannas, hill forest, swamp forest, peat swamp and cultivation. In 2000, a team from the Indonesian Forestry Service (PHKA), BirdLife Indonesia, and the NGO YASCITA (Yayasan Cinta Alam-Kendari) team undertook a survey of C. sulphurea sulphurea in selected areas of RAWNP and estimated a total population of perhaps 100 individuals or less. The fossils show an unusual combination of features: diffuse porous vessel arrangement, simple perforation plates, alternate intervessel pitting, vessel–ray parenchyma pits either with much reduced borders or similar to the intervessel pits, abundant sclerotic tyloses, rays markedly heterocellular with long uniseriate tails, and rare to absent axial parenchyma. This combination of features allows assignment of the fossils to Malpighiales, and we note similarities with four predominantly tropical families: Salicaceae, Achariaceae, and especially, Phyllanthaceae, and Euphorbiaceae. -

Box 9514, 2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands; e-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY Based on phylogenetic studies with DNA sequence data, the formerly monotypic genus Cordemoya was recently expanded with 16 additional species previously assigned to Mallotus. However, the earliest legitimate generic name available is Hancea, and, therefore, Cordemoya is here reduced to Hancea (20 new combinations are proposed). Subsequently, the subgenus and section Diplochlamys from Asia are renamed to Hancea. Additionally, the genus Adisca is lectotypified with Adisca flori bundus (= Mallotus floribundus). INTRODUCTION Based on a well-supported clade obtained with DNA sequence data (Kulju et al., 2007, f. 2), the genus Cordemoya Baill. (formerly monotypic with C. integrifolia (Willd.) Baill. from the Mascarene Islands as single species) was expanded by Sierra et al. (2006) with sixteen additional species previously assigned to Mallotus Lour. Pollen and leaf anatomical studies revealed characters that are important for the delimitation of both genera. Cordemoya can be distinguished by the presence of pollen ornamenta- tion with scabrae and by capitate glandular hairs with multicellular stalks and sessile peltate-stellate hairs with a central cell, while Mallotus is recognized by the presence of a perforate/micro-reticulate pollen ornamentation with scabrae and by spherical to disc-shaped multicellular glandular hairs.
