CARNIVAL 2013

As our long awaited summer gets underway as a season, if not with the weather, I would like to extend a warm invitation to everybody to join us at our annual Village Carnival. On August 11th Wythall Park will once again play host to our afternoon of fun and entertainment.

This year we are celebrating 60 years of the world’s most famous secret agent James Bond, It is 60 years since Ian Fleming penned his first adventure, Casino Royale, at his island retreat “Goldeneye”.

To support the theme we have an arena show offering the Community Choir singing some of the themes from Bond movies, an energetic gymnastics display, and three displays from the Fall Guys stunt team.

Of course we also have the ever-popular favourites of the Fun Dog Show, the Classic Cars and, back in the arena, a selection of children’s games. Add to this the numerous stalls from local charities and clubs, the fun fair and of course ice cream and burgers. We have something for everybody.

Come along and join us for the packed afternoon organised and presented for your enjoyment by the volunteers of Wythall Community Association. While at the Park pay a visit to our stall and see what goes on in the park; discover the the Community Club, and the many clubs that use our facilities and enjoy our grounds. You can also pick up a membership form and join our community.

37 acres of private park open for the public but run by volunteers for the enjoyment of the community. Football pitches, cricket pitches, tennis courts and more. Whatever your hobby you may find it here within walking distance of home.

To help you get into the theme of the Carnival, we have put together a Bond quiz for you to see just how well you know his adventures. Visit the Park website www.wythall-park.org.uk/carnival/ and follow the link to download the questions and the answer sheet. Return it, with your £1 entry fee, to the bar at Wythall House and maybe you could win £50 first prize.

We hope you can accept our invitation and we look forward to seeing you on August 11th.

As well as the Obedience rings, there will be 4 rings this year giving everybody the opportunity to try it out. We will also have an obstacle course set up and a Rallyo course. "What’s that?", I hear you ask. Well I’m not going to tell you! You’ll have to come and find out for yourselves. There will also be the family favourites such as waggiest tail, most beautiful puppy and many more for all to enter.

HEY KIDS!! You know your Dad keeps telling you he’s much better at dog handling than you. Well come along and have a family competition. Mind you if he does beat you, you know that everybody will never hear the last of it. However, there will be a number of experienced and willing people around to give help and advice - maybe just enough to beat him.

As well as the competition rings we will be having a raffle and tombola with prizes supplied by Thomas Brothers, Aston Martin, Gems TV, Cadbury, Fish For Dogs, Wet Paws, Spencer Supplies and many many more.

There will be an Aston Martin available for you to look at and to have your picture taken in. Now what a Facebook profile picture that would make!!

All money raised on the day is to go to German Shephard Elite Ltd, Ruff Luck charities and Wythall Community Association.

So if its your first puppy or your 456th dog why not come along and join us for a great fun day out with your dogs? 6 Activities on Wythall Park Bonfire Night - Saturday 2nd November 2013

I would firstly like to thank my fellow Councillors for electing me as their chairman for the forthcoming year until May 2014. I would also like to thank them for the time and commitment that they have given to the Parish Council over the past year, especially our outgoing chairman, Mrs Jill Dyer MBE, who had some difficult and challenging planning issues with which to deal. Finally I would like to thank Pat Harrison, our Executive Officer and her assistant, Kerie Harris for supporting the Council and the services that we provide.

The Parish Council office in Beaudesert Road is open each weekday from 10.00 am until 2.00 pm. Pat and Kerie will always try to help answer your queries and resolve them where possible. Although we are not responsible for mending potholes or clearing litter from our streets we will always report them to the appropriate authority, and monitor their resolution.

The Parish Council meets on the third Thursday of each month (except August and December), at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall. Residents are welcome at our meetings and the first 15 minutes of each meeting is given over to any members of the public who would like to address the Council on any issues. Contact details, dates of committee meetings, and Council minutes are all published on the Council website: www.wythall-parish-council.org.uk/

I look forward to working with and meeting as many of you as possible over the forthcoming months.

The name originates from Medieval times, when he would walk the length of the Parish, ensuring that ditches and drains were clear. Modern day lengthsmen undertake a number of other useful duties, as well as clearing drains and ditches, such as cleaning up road signs, trimming back Jill Dyer MBE, Chairman of the Parish Council, Betty overgrowth along footpaths, and even installing vehicle Webb, Vice Chairman of the Parish Council and Mo activated speed signs. Each year, if you take pride in your own garden, or think that someone else's garden looks a picture, you can contact the Parish Council office and nominate the garden to be entered in the competition.

Firstly, a very big thank-you to all who supported our candidate, Stephen Peters, and re-elected him as your County Councillor for Wythall Division in the May elections. Stephen increased his majority to nearly 400 and obtained over 51% of the total vote. He promises to continue to work hard on your behalf over the next 4 years. The turn-out was a rather disappointing 28% and we would urge everyone to make the effort to vote next time and consider applying to vote by post to make it easier. (We have a supply of the forms and can help you to apply for a postal vote if you let us know). Stephen will continue to serve as Vice-Chairman of the County Council’s Standards & Ethics Committee and Resources Scrutiny Panel and he has also been appointed to the Fire Authority.

Our Parish Councillors have now taken over the reins on the Parish Council, with Sue Baxter becoming Chairman and Helen Cleaver serving as Vice-Chairman. WRA has the majority of councillors on the Parish Council and are determined to improve the way YOUR Parish Council serves YOU.

WRA operates through an elected Committee comprising local councillors and other dedicated members of the Association. We would like to do more for our residents, be they members or not, but it is becoming increasingly difficult due to age and infirmity catching up on our stalwarts. So, we appeal to anyone who wishes to give something back to the local community to put yourselves forward to join our committee and consider standing as candidates in the Parish and District elections to be held in 2015. Now is the time to prepare yourselves and to start to participate in local affairs and deal with local issues.

If anyone wishes to raise any local issues or concerns your WRA Councillors all live in the vicinity and can be contacted as follows: District Councillor Sue Baxter (Drakes Cross & Walkers Heath) – 01564 824920 District Councillor Les Turner (Hollywood & Majors Green) – 0121 430 8478 County Councillor Stephen Peters (Wythall Division excluding South Wythall) – 01564 824927

Architect’s impression of the new church interior (left), Vicar, Chair of Governors and Head pose on the building site (centre), Concrete foundations are poured.

10, 9, 8… (months) – The Countdown to the new St Mary’s Begins Anyone picking children up from The Coppice School over the last couple of months can’t help but have noticed the emergence of the new building project. These are exciting times for The Coppice as the school expands, and also for St Mary’s as the project incorporates a new church too. As the building work began at the end of May, the congregation gathered around the building site after our Sunday service to pray for the project and give thanks to God – “Great is Thy Faithfulness” was a truly appropriate hymn to sing!

It’s fascinating to watch the project unfold day by day, week by week, and in its early stages to notice just how much work needs to be done on the unseen foundations below ground before any of the more attractive and visible parts are put into place. Of course building work can be a powerful metaphor for other things too – Jesus said that following his teaching was like building a house on a rock, which would stand firm even when the rains fell and the floods rose.

If that’s true for individuals, it’s also true for St Mary’s as a church – deciding on décor and furniture is one thing, but more important and enduring is ensuring we stay true to our foundations and vision – to be a flourishing church at the heart of a flourishing Wythall and Hollywood. As we dedicate prayer, thought and finance to this vision we’d be grateful for your thoughts, and your prayers, too. And, in time, through a season of special events and open days from next Easter, we’d love you to come and have a look, and make a connection with our new church and yours!

In the meantime St Mary’s Sunday services take place weekly at The Coppice School on Shawhurst Lane, at 9am and 10.30am. Keep in touch with news and special events via our website www.wythallchurch.net, including our Harvest Festival on 6th October. Below is just a flavour of what we’ve been up to over the last few months.

From Easter to Pentecost Around eighty primary school children from The Coppice and Meadow Green attend ‘JAM’ after school clubs, run by St Mary’s. On Palm Sunday we had a ‘JAM’ service, led by our Youth and Children’s Worker Dean Taylor, where children and adults were all invited to make palm leaves, watch some magic and join in the songs and the messy game. There was a good turnout on a snowy Sunday, and lots of fun was had!

Palm Sunday also saw the start of our 24:7 prayer for Holy Week. The prayer room was open day and night until Easter morning, with people signed up to pray for an hour or more. A creative and prayerful atmosphere gave plenty of food for thought, and included a prayer tree, mural wall, candles and incense, spirituality questionnaires and a large mosaic. Time spent in the prayer room could be busy and active or quiet and still, and the most repeated comment was how fast the hour had gone!

On the Wednesday before Easter, while parents’ evening was taking place next door, the hall at Coppice was transformed into a multi-sensory journey through the Easter story. Nine areas were created, each representing a stage of Jesus' journey during Holy week, from the quiet of the Garden of Gethsemane, through Peter's betrayal, Pilate's questions and eventually to Jesus' death and even our own version of the tomb. A powerful, prayerful and reflective evening was experienced by all as we were able to engage with the Easter story through sight, sound, smell and touch.

And finally, on 19th May we welcomed HCLC and Wythall Baptist church to join us in a joint service to celebrate Pentecost. A packed out Coppice experienced an amazing and blessed time as we met together to celebrate the birth of the church.
