Publicado por: Juventud Rebelde Netflix aseguró este miércoles en un comunicado de prensa que Los Bridgerton, el último éxito televisivo de Shonda Rhimes, ha sido visto por 82 millones de cuenta en sus primeros 28 días tras su fantástico estreno en las Navidades, lo que la posiciona como la serie más vista en la historia del gigante digital. En el caso de los datos de audiencia de Netflix es recomendable andar con pies de plomo, ya que el método que usa la plataforma para definir un visionado resulta muy controvertido: basta con que un usuario vea un contenido concreto durante dos minutos para que se contabilice, advierte la agencia Efe, aunque reconoce que, por muy dudoso que sea la manera de Netflix a la hora de presentar sus éxitos, Los Bridgerton se ha situado por encima de otros fenómenos como del servicio de «streaming» como The Witcher, Lupin, Gambito de Dama o incluso Stranger Things. La semana pasada, Netflix confirmó que habrá una segunda temporada de Los Bridgerton por medio de la misteriosa narradora de la serie, Lady Whistledown. En una nota firmada de su puño y letra, este personaje desveló que la próxima temporada de la serie se centrará en el hermano mayor de la familia, Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey), y que se empezará a rodar en primavera. «Esta autora ha sido fielmente informada de que Lord Anthony Bridgerton pretende dominar la temporada social», señaló Lady Whistledown, quien advirtió de que tendrá su pluma «lista para relatar todas sus actividades románticas». Aunque no se han dado a conocer más detalles, se da por descontado que Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) y el duque de Hastings (Regé-Jean Page) seguirán formando parte de la trama de esta serie de época. Los Bridgerton podrían volver a la pequeña pantalla a finales de 2021 o en 2022. Sobre la serie Shonda Rhimes se ha convertido en una de las productora y creadoras más prolíficas y exitosas de la televisión actual por mérito propio. Tras conquistar a la audiencia con los dramas románticos y profesionales de los médicos en un hospital de Seattle en Anatomía de Grey, ha seguido sumando proyecto aclamado tras proyecto aclamado, como Scandal o Cómo defender a un asesino (en esta última, firma como productora). Su primera apuesta para Netflix ha sido Los Bridgerton. Además de dramas románticos, intrigas de todo tipo y diálogos maliciosos, la serie también ha enganchado a los espectadores con una banda sonora muy moderna para la época en la que se ambienta, refriere 20Minutos. La primera entrega de esta serie, que ya ha anunciado su segunda temporada, sigue las desventuras de Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) en su búsqueda de marido dentro de la alta sociedad londinense del siglo XIX. Sin embargo, todo se tuerce para la favorita de la reina cuando sale a la luz un misterioso diario (el de Lady Whistledown, con la voz en off de Julie Andrews) que da cuenta de unos supuestos escándalos protagonizados por su familia.     The consumption of foreign Netflix originals by American audiences Student name: Zuzana Pekárková Student number: 499221 Supervisor: Dr. Deborah Castro Mariño Master Media Studies – Media & Creative Industries Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication Erasmus University Rotterdam Master Thesis September 2019 THE CONSUMPTION OF FOREIGN NETFLIX ORIGINALS BY AMERICAN AUDIENCES Abstract The increasing dominance and popularity of streaming video-on-demand platforms, most notably Netflix, has transformed the television and film industry – from disrupting established business models, to affecting the process of production, as well as audience’s attitudes and viewing behaviors (Pardo, 2013). One of these recent developments that remains largely unmapped in academic literature is the unprecedented success of non-English Netflix originals on the American market. Shows such as the German Dark or Spanish Elite are breaking the traditional notion of a one-way flow between the continents and gaining avid viewers among the mainstream US audience, which has historically been thought of as rather resistant to international television imports (Hazelton, 2018; McDonald, 2009; Saleem, 2018). Hence, the present thesis explored this emerging phenomenon by investigating why do American viewers watch foreign Netflix originals and how does cultural proximity and individuals’ cultural capital relate to the consumption of foreign Netflix originals by American audiences. Additionally, the study also investigated the ways in which American viewers perceive the quality of foreign Netflix original and how these perceptions of quality contribute to the shows’ appeal. The exploration was guided by theories related to the transnational appeal of high-end television, the contemporary conceptualizations of quality TV and the theories surrounding the roles of cultural proximity and cultural capital in informing and motivating television viewership (Dunleavy, 2014; Jenner, 2018; La Pastina & Straubhaar, 2005).
