The modern white wedding – an event marked by engagement with the marketplace, recognition of prescribed gender roles and re- sponsibilities, declaration of religious or spiri- tual belonging, and self-conscious embrace of “traditions” such as formal dress, proper vows, and a post-ceremony reception – has survived, and even thrived, Karen Dunak argues, be- cause of couples’ ability to personalize the celebration and exert individual authority over its shape. The wedding’s ability to withstand and even absorb challenges or interpretation has helped the celebration maintain its long-standing ap- peal. Because accepted wedding traditions, such as an exchange of vows before a select- ed authority fi gure, the witness of the celebra- tion by a chosen audience, or the hosting of a post-wedding reception, could be shaped to fi t personal values and visions, celebrants – from sweethearts of the early postwar years to hippies of the 1960s to same-sex couples of the 2000s – maintained those traditions. In the light of this, the paper seeks to introduce Akan symbolism into contemporary bridal wears to be adapted for church weddings. It aims at reviving the lost socio-cultural educative impact in contemporary Ghanaian fashion design concepts. The introduction of this "indigenous ingenuity" to contemporary fashion design concepts is based purely on aesthetic appeal as well as Ghanaian traditional philosophy. The paper explores the awareness and use of Adinkra symbols, to promote their use for wedding gowns in Ghana and beyond. The study employed observational descriptive research approach to determine the kinds of wedding gowns on the market. The end result of the symbolic wedding gown presented reflects a contemporary design concept, fused into a traditional design concept. The paper recommends that the exchange of ideas between the two design concepts be encouraged and considered as a legitimate means of including postmodern or contemporary wedding design concepts in the Ghanaian fashion industry.

In order to make connections throughout the piece, the evolution of marriage culture and the wedding dress in America must first be understood. Next, to make an informed prediction, one must determine what factors have an effect on the dress and how they ultimately translate into stylistic features. American current events, culture, and fashion (as they pertain to women) come together with American wedding culture in any given decade to shape the model of the ideal wedding gown. Upon analyzing the different culture, fashion, and views of marriage across the span of 50 years, from the 1920s and again from the 1970s, it becomes clear how they are translated into the style of the respective decade's wedding dress. The connections are further verified by analyzing Ball State University's Beeman Collection's authentic, locally-donated wedding gowns from each period. Based on the understanding of these connections between culture and dress, the predicted culture of 2020 can be used to anticipate a prominent style of dress for the American weddings of that decade.
