NEWSIES is based on a true story: the historical strike that actually took place in New York in July of 1899. The strike was well documented due to its notoriety. Dozens of newspapers couldn’t resist the headline of a bunch of kids bringing down their competition! Fact be told the boys and girls who sold newspapers on the streets went up against Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World and William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal. The Newsies fought for the opportunity to earn a decent wage. The Newsies after a two week strike came to a compromise with the famed publishers. Although the raised price would stay the same, the publishers would buy back any papers the Newsies couldn’t sell. The strike is a “ significant moment in history” since it was one of the first carried out by children and it ended in compromise: the kids succeeded! “Tomorrow they’ll see what we are, and sure as a star, we ain’t come this far to lose” Gail Nadeem Helfer Gail Nadeem Helfer Performance History of The Crane Acting Troupe Oklahoma 1993 42nd Street 2007 Our Town 1994 Anything Goes 2008 Camelot 1995 Grease 2009 South Pacific 1996 Wizard of Oz 2010 Grease 1997 Beauty and the Beast 2011 Guys & Dolls 1998 Our Town 2012 Oklahoma 1999 Thoroughly Modern Millie 2013 Wizard of Oz 2000 Disney’s Peter Pan Jr. 2014 Cinderella 2001 Shrek Jr. 2015 Hello Dolly 2002 Mary Poppins 2016 Bye Bye Birdie 2003 42nd Street 2017 Beauty and the Beast 2005 White Christmas 2018 Fiddler On The Roof 2006 Disney’s Newsies 2019 Thank you: Two of Us Productions/Roving Actors Repertory Company | The Mac-Haydn Theatre, Inc THE CRANE ACTING TROUPE Class of Olivia Chandler Grace Dragos Susanna Dolan 2019 Owen Farley Hanna Gardella Tyler Garrison Samantha Kittle Julianne LaGrassa Bailey MacKenzie Scheuttig Madison Wagner Lapo-McDermott Music by Lyrics by Book by Alan Menken Jack Feldman Harvey Fierstein Based on the Disney Film written by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White Originally produced on Broadway by Disney Theatrical Productions Orchestrations by Danny Troob | Incidental Music & Vocal Arrangemets by Michael Kosarin | Dance Arrangements by Mark Hummel DISNEY’S NEWIES is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International(MTI). • Dissertation Final Corrected
FROM PENCIL TO PERFORMANCE: The creative nexus of arranging, orchestration and music direction in works of contemporary pop/rock musical theatre BRYAN SCHIMMEL 8300995 A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Humanities University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Music Final Corrected Submission 22 September 2014 ABSTRACT In the art form of musical theatre, available literature on the creative musical aspects of musicals has focused primarily on the composers and/or lyricists; their works having been extensively analysed and documented. There is, however, comparatively less literature and documentation on the processes that guide the transformation of the theatre composer’s work to an eventual performance embracing arranging, orchestration and music direction. This dissertation explores these practices from two perspectives – the creative and the recreative. First, from the creative perspective, I challenge Joseph P. Swain who makes a compelling case for composition as a tool of dramaturgy in his book The Broadway Musical: A Critical and Musical Survey (2002). I contest that his argument cannot hold true for pop/rock musicals in which the scores are comprised of pre-existing popular music that was not originally or intentionally composed for the stage. In order to understand how music functions as a dramatic element in musical theatre, it must follow that all collaborative creative forces that contribute to this music must be evaluated in a holistic manner. Dramaturgy contextualises and elucidates storytelling and artistic vision. While Swain has postulated that composition is an element of dramaturgy, I offer the notion that since arranging and orchestration contextualise and elucidate the composition they therefore cannot be excluded as dramaturgical devices.

Dear Friends, We are so thrilled to welcome you back to The Moonlight and our first family show since 2019: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. As you are watching the show tonight, you will see many moving parts on stage: special effects, sets and scenery changes, stage lighting and numerous (Left to right) Jennifer Bradford, other details that are performed on cue. Stanley D. Cohen, Steven Glaudini Many designers, crew members, and and Colleen Kollar Smith technicians contribute to make these intricacies come to fruition, but the individuals at the helm are the remarkable members of our stage management teams. It is appropriate in the Year of the Stage Manager to celebrate these unsung heroes of the theatre. They are responsible for scheduling and running rehearsals. They serve as the liaison between the director and the rest of the creative team. From opening night through the closing night, they ensure that the director’s vision of the show remains in place. Their most visible job function is to call the sound, lighting, scenery, and special effects cues in the dark from the back of the amphitheatre in the sound and lighting booth. Tonight, all those elements are being overseen by Stanley D. Cohen, who we refer to as the “Rolls-Royce of Stage Managers.” Stanley has stage managed more than 70 productions at The Moonlight.
