NEWSIES is based on a true story: the historical strike that actually took place in New York in July of 1899. The strike was well documented due to its notoriety. Dozens of newspapers couldn’t resist the headline of a bunch of kids bringing down their competition! Fact be told the boys and girls who sold newspapers on the streets went up against Joseph Pulitzer of the New York World and William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal. The Newsies fought for the opportunity to earn a decent wage. The Newsies after a two week strike came to a compromise with the famed publishers. Although the raised price would stay the same, the publishers would buy back any papers the Newsies couldn’t sell. The strike is a “ significant moment in history” since it was one of the first carried out by children and it ended in compromise: the kids succeeded!
