    CONSTELLATION TRIANGULUM, THE TRIANGLE Triangulum is a small constellation in the northern sky. Its name is Latin for "triangle", derived from its three brightest stars, which form a long and narrow triangle. Known to the ancient Babylonians and Greeks, Triangulum was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy. The celestial cartographers Johann Bayer and John Flamsteed catalogued the constellation's stars, giving six of them Bayer designations. The white stars Beta and Gamma Trianguli, of apparent magnitudes 3.00 and 4.00, respectively, form the base of the triangle and the yellow-white Alpha Trianguli, of magnitude 3.41, the apex. Iota Trianguli is a notable double star system, and there are three star systems with planets located in Triangulum. The constellation contains several galaxies, the brightest and nearest of which is the Triangulum Galaxy or Messier 33—a member of the Local Group. The first quasar ever observed, 3C 48, also lies within Triangulum's boundaries. HISTORY AND MYTHOLOGY In the Babylonian star catalogues, Triangulum, together with Gamma Andromedae, formed the constellation known as MULAPIN "The Plough". It is notable as the first constellation presented on (and giving its name to) a pair of tablets containing canonical star lists that were compiled around 1000 BC, the MUL.APIN. The Plough was the first constellation of the "Way of Enlil"—that is, the northernmost quarter of the Sun's path, which corresponds to the 45 days on either side of summer solstice. Its first appearance in the pre-dawn sky (heliacal rising) in February marked the time to begin spring ploughing in Mesopotamia.

    M33, de Driehoeknevel, gefotografeerd door VSRUG leden. Hugo Van den Broeck In de nacht van 6 op 7 december 2013 maakte een team van 6 VSRUG astrofotografen, (Guy Wauters, Chris De Pauw, Hugo Van Eeckhaut, Angelo Van Daele, Dirk Van Den Branden en Hugo Van den Broeck) fotografische opnamen van het sterrenstelsel M33. De galaxy M33 ligt in het sterrenbeeld “Driehoek”. Het sterrenbeeld “Driehoek” of met zijn Latijnse naam “Triangulum” is een klein sterrenbeeld, gelegen in de noordelijke sterrenhemel, met 3 sterren die tezamen een scherpe driehoek vormen. Het sterrenbeeld was reeds gekend in de oudheid door Babiloniërs en Grieken en werd door Claudius Ptolemaeus in de 2de eeuw na Christus opgenomen in zijn lijst van 48 gekende sterrenbeelden. Alpha Trianguli is een geel- witte ster die de scherpe hoek van de driehoek vertegenwoordigt en heeft als helderheid magnitude 3,42. Alpha Trianguli is ook bekend onder zijn Arabische naam Metallah. Beta Trianguli is de helderste ster en heeft een magnitude van 3,0. Gamma Trianguli is de minst heldere ster van het drietal met magnitude 4,03. Deze drie sterren zijn goed waarneembaar met het blote oog in een niet al te lichtvervuilde omgeving. Het sterrenbeeld “Driehoek” is omgeven door de grotere sterrenbeelden Andromeda, Vissen (Pisces), Ram (Aries) en Perseus (links, net niet op het kaartje) en in deze volgorde met de wijzers van het uurwerk mee. M33 in het sterrenbeeld Driehoek (Triangulum) ligt op de kaart niet ver verwijderd van het Andromeda sterrenstelsel, beiden in oranje weergegeven. De Driehoeknevel, beter bekend als M33, ligt op de kaart niet zo ver verwijderd van de ster Alpha Trianguli, in de richting van de ster Mirach in het sterrenbeeld Andromeda.

    The Mineralogy of Star Trek: The Next Series Jeffrey de Fourestier, MSM, FMinSoc Ottawa, Canada [email protected] “I’m a doctor, not a coal miner.” (Dr Leonard McCoy, 1967). _____________________________________________________________________________ INTRODUCTION In 2005, The Mineralogical Record published as the third issue of the first volume of its on-line e- zine the article “The Mineralogy of Star Trek”1. This was the first systematic effort to give an overview of mineralogy as it exists in the imaginary world of Star Trek in all of its manifestations on film and on television. It was also an effort to put together a comprehensive list of materials referred to in the various Star Trek incarnations that either referred to minerals or mined substances (both real and fictitious) and of materials that might be mistaken for minerals as their names ended with the suffix “ite”. The public reaction to the original article was tremendous, even though it had been written for fun and to make sense of what had been presented in the Star Trek world. One intention of the article was to hopefully influence the producers of Star Trek to improve the mineral nomenclature in future episodes. Unfortunately, the last series “Enterprise” was cancelled at about the same time as the article was published. Perhaps this article and the original article will at least influence future series, films or independent writers and gamesters of the Star Trek genre. The task that was undertaken relied on being able to watch over and over again hundreds of hours of episodes and films available for viewing, collect all possible names, identify them and tabulate them.
