Galway Salthill is a seaside resort on the northern shore of Galway Bay, Ireland. Salthill Promenade offers views of the nearby harbour city of Galway and the Aran Islands. Co. Galway is located in the West of Ireland, in the province of Connacht. Galway lies on the River Corrib between Lough Corrib and Galway bay. It is the fourth biggest city in the Republic of Ireland. Galway is known as Ireland’s Cultural Heart and is renowned for its vibrant lifestyle and numerous festivals, celebrations and events. Every November, Galway hosts the Tulca Festival of Visual Arts, among others. Many sporting, music, arts and other events take place in the city. These include the Galway Film Fleadh in July, the Galway Races in August, and the Galway International Oyster Festival in September. In July, the big top tent comes out to celebrate the Galway Arts Festival. During this week, there are arts exhibits including theatre, visual arts and music. Galway is also home to the largest medieval parish church in Ireland, St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church of Ireland, which is on Market Street in the city centre and is open to visitors. Galway has a strong hurling tradition and both the hurling and football teams are known as ‘The Tribesmen’. The Galway County colours are maroon and white. Ó CINNÉIDE Department of Geography, National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland. ABSTRACT Quality of life is increasingly recognised as a vital component of sustainable urban development. Indicators are used to assess quality of life and to monitor progress towards sustainability over time. An emerging body of literature contends that these indicators need to be derived in close consultation with target populations in order to optimise the extent to which they capture the real determinants of quality of life in particular places. Furthermore, quality of life considerations vary signifi cantly across urban neighbourhoods and consequently the spatial scale at which such studies are conducted may have signifi cant implications for the results obtained. This study focuses on spatial variations in quality of life in Galway, a city of approximately 70,000 people, situated on the west coast of Ireland. Galway is reported as having an exceptionally high quality of life, how- ever, signifi cant variations are found to exist across city neighbourhoods. Factors contributing to this spatial pattern are explored in this paper. An important lesson emerging from this study is that quality of life indicators derived at the neighbourhood level are of utmost importance when assessing the reality of living in different urban settings.
