B B L L U U E S I D N K November 2016 Duke Robillard-‘Blues Full Circle’ Duke Robillard surely must be one of the very most prolific blues artists found anywhere. Everywhere I turn he has a new release out whether a solo venture or one of his many collaborations with the likes of Eric Bibb. With the release of ‘Blues Full Circle’ he does not disappoint with a thoroughly enjoyable CD. The very first cut sets the tone with ‘Lay a Little Lovin’ On Me’ which really supports Duke’s voicing. Following that is a nice bit of lazy shuffling in ‘Rain Keeps Falling’. ‘Fool About My Money’ changes things up and gets in a little Louisiana Zydeco. Duke Robillard returns completely to his roots of blues with this all star line-up of Duke Robillard on guitars and vocals, Bruce Bears on Piano and Hammond, Brad Hallen on bass and Mark Teixeira on drums, and if that isn't enough Duke adds musical dynamite with guest shots by Jimmie Vaughan, Sugar Ray Norcia and Kelley Hunt. It's what you expect from Duke Robillard all 13 songs and 52 minutes of it. ’Blues Full Circle’ seems to have it all and is completely an enjoyable listen. Colin James-Blue Highways Blues singer/guitarist Colin is one of several excellent Canadian blues artists, this is his 18th. album release and he has been playing the blues since he was a teenager in the 1980s. And it quite frankly it shows, this album sees him saluting his blues heroes, from Freddie King to Howlin' Wolf, from Robert Johnson to British blues guitarist Peter Green, with Colin and the band effortlessly going through a number of styles and sounds paying tribute to these artists but putting their own spin on things rather than doing straight copies. -

GIVING AMERICA BACK THE BLUES OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION How did the early Rolling Stones help popularize the Blues? OVERVIEW The Rolling Stones ultimately made their mark as the nonconformist outlaws of Rock and Roll. But before they were bad boys, the Stones were missionaries of the Blues. The young Rolling Stones — Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, and Bill Wyman — were white kids who hailed from working- and middle-class Britain and set out to play American music, primarily that of African Americans with roots in the South. In so doing, they helped bring this music to a new, largely white audience, both in Britain and the United States. The young men who formed the Rolling Stones emerged from the club scene fostered by British Blues pioneers Cyril Davies and Alexis Korner. These two men and their band, Blues Incorporated, helped popularize the American Blues, whose raw intensity resonated with a generation of Britons who had grown up in the shadow of war, death, the Blitz, postwar rationing, and the hardening of the Cold War standoff. Much of the Stones’ early work consisted of faithful covers of American Blues artists that Davies, Korner, and the Stones venerated: Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Slim Harpo, Jimmy Reed. The early Stones in particular helped make the Blues wildly popular among young Britons. As the Stones’ fame grew and they became part of the mid-1960s British “invasion” of America, they also reintroduced the Blues to American listeners, most notably young, white audiences with limited exposure to the music. But almost from day one, the Stones were more than a Blues cover band. -
B.C. Jazz Legend Performing with Ensemble Vivant Group by Mary Cocivera
B.C. jazz legend performing with Ensemble Vivant group by Mary Cocivera Ensemble Vivant, a group of five musicians, will take the stage at the Kelowna Community Theatre Thursday to weave some musical magic, ranging from Bach to Piazzolla. Known for its wide-ranging genre diversity, the Toronto-based ensemble will feature music with a distinctly Latin flavour. Jazz musician Don Thompson returns to his native British Columbia for this Kelowna gig. Born and raised in Powell River, he started his 50 year musical career with piano lessons, but started jamming with jazz musicians in his teens and moved to Vancouver in the early 1960s to play bass in Lloyd Arntzen's Dixieland quartet. When the neck broke off his borrowed bass, he bought his own bass and became one of the go-to bassists for countless studio sessions in Vancouver. He taught himself to play vibraphone and was the only vibes player in all of Vancouver at the time. Thompson moved to California in the late 1960s, to play and tour with saxophonist John Handy. As a pianist, bassist, percussionist, composer, arranger and producer, he is described as a musician who can move flawlessly from vibes to bass to piano and sound virtuosic on each instrument. Thompson played in Jim Hall's trio, George Shearing's band and has collaborated with Moe Koffman, Ed Bickert, Rob McConnell, Lenny Breau, Sarah Vaughan, Kenny Wheeler, Art Farmer, Phil Dwyer and many others. He has performed in Europe, Japan, Great Britain, South America and at every major jazz festival in North America. -

Brian Auger´s Oblivion Express feat. Alex Ligertwood Alex Ligertwood (li.) und Brian Auger (re.) „Brian Auger (* 18. Juli 1939 in London) ist einer der profiliertesten Jazz- und Rock-Keyboarder der Gegenwart. Für seine Millionen Fans ist der einzigartige Sound, der seine Wurzeln im Jazz, Rock, Soul und Funk hat, ein unverkennbares Markenzeichen des berühmten Hammond - und Keyboard -Spielers. Schon früh erhielt Auger Klavierunterricht. 1962 formierte er sein Brian Auger Trio mit Rick Laird und Schlagzeuger Phil Kinorra als zunächst reine Jazzcombo. 1965 gründete er zusammen mit Rod Stewart, Julie Driscoll und John Baldry die Gruppe The Steampacket. Nachdem Rod Stewart und John Baldry die Gruppe verlassen hatten, gründete Auger mit Julie Driscoll die Gruppe Trinity. In dieser Besetzung hatte die Band mehrere Single-Hits (Road ToCairo, This Wheel's on Fire, Season Of The Witch) und brachte das viel beachtete Doppelalbum „Streetnoise“ (1969) heraus. Nachdem Driscoll 1969 Trinity verließ, besetzte Auger die Gruppe um (mit Gary Boyle), doch konnte er nicht mehr an die Erfolge der späten 1960er Jahre anknüpfen und löste Trinity 1970 auf. Auch mit seiner anschließend gegründeten Band Oblivion Express hatte Auger zunächst keinen übermäßigen Erfolg. Seit dem Album „CloserToIt“ (1973), das es in die Charts schaffte, festigte sich der Gruppenstil zu einer groove-betonten Mischung aus rhythmischen Elementen des R&B und Funk und harmonischen und melodischen Elementen des Jazz. Brian Auger trat auch mit Klaus Doldinger, Alexis Korner, Pete York, Eric Burdon und anderen Größen der populären Musik auf. 1974 zog Auger in die USA, wo er weiter Alben aufnahm. In den USA bekam er wieder Kontakt zu Julie Tippetts-Driscoll. -

Jazz Report magazine also awarded them the best “Electric Jazz Group of the Year” status for three consecutive years. Jim Hillman’s career as a mature artist still flourishes and along with directing his own group, The Teresina Quartet, he has recently joined the academic staff of Concordia University’s music department.
