Switzerland and Slovenia appear to be locked in a battle for second place in UEFA EURO 2016 Group E, with England one win away from guaranteeing one of the top spots. Previous meetings • Milivoje Novakovič's penalty with 11 minutes left secured Slovenia maximum points in Maribor when the sides met in Group E last October. • Switzerland's record in eight games against Slovenia is W5 D1 L2 (W3 D0 L1 in Switzerland), with those games including a friendly played in Muscat, Oman, which Switzerland won 2-0. That was the nations' first encounter. • The teams also faced off in 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying. In the opening instalment, Granit Xhaka (20) and captain Gökhan Inler (51) scored as Ottmar Hitzfeld's Switzerland beat Slaviša Stojanovič's Slovenia 2-0 in Ljubljana on 7 September 2012. Xhaka (74) struck again as the Swiss prevailed 1-0 when the sides' group stage campaign concluded in Berne; had they won, Slovenia – by then coached by Srečko Katanec – would have earned a play-off place. Disciplinary • Switzerland midfielder Xhaka is a booking away from a suspension. Form guide • In Switzerland's last 16 home qualifiers (W11 D3 L2), the only country to have beaten them are England – 3-1 in 2010 and 2-0 in 2014. • Switzerland have won their last four Group E matches since opening with defeats by England and Slovenia. • Slovenia's campaign has been one of extremes: W3 L3, with no games drawn. Trivia and links • Slovenia midfielder Andraž Kirm turns 31 the day after the Switzerland fixture. • Slovenia goalkeeper Samir Handanovič and Switzerland midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri were club-mates at FC Internazionale Milano before Shaqiri left for Stoke City FC this summer. • In nine encounters between these nations in UEFA age-group competitions, Switzerland's record is W7 D1 L1. • The two countries' clubs have met in nine UEFA matches, with the Swiss teams' record W4 D4 L1.

5 Switzerland - Slovenia Saturday 5 September 2015 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit St. Jakob-Park, Basel Head coach Vladimir Petković Date of birth: 15 August 1963 Nationality: Swiss Playing career: FK Sarajevo (twice), FK Rudar Ljubija, FC Koper, FC Chur 97 (twice), FC Sion, FC Martigny-Sports, AC Bellinzona (twice), FC Locarno Coaching career: AC Bellinzona (twice), FC Malcantone Agno, AC Lugano, BSC Young Boys, Samsunspor, FC Sion, SS Lazio, Switzerland • Started his career in midfield with Sarajevo, losing in the 1983 Yugoslavian Cup final but featuring twice as his team took the 1984/85 league title, the only major honour of his playing days. • Moved to Switzerland in 1987, playing for second-tier Chur and then ascending to the top flight with Sion in 1988/89; failed to secure a regular place and returned to the second division to represent Martigny, Bellinzona and Locarno. • Petković hung up his boots in 1999, aged 36, following a season as player-coach at Bellinzona. Then led Malcantone Agno to promotion from the third divison in 2002/03 before becoming the first coach of AC Lugano – successors to FC Lugano. • Rejoined Bellinzona in October 2005, steering them to the 2007/08 Swiss Cup final, where they lost 4-1 to FC Basel 1893, but consolation came two weeks later as victory in a relegation/promotion play-off against FC St Gallen gave Bellinzona a Super League berth. • Was appointed Young Boys coach in August 2008, guiding them to second-placed finishes in his first two campaigns in charge as well the 2008/09 Swiss Cup final. After short spells in charge of Turkey's Samsunspor and Sion back in Switzerland, was named Lazio coach in June 2012 and won the Coppa Italia in his first term in Italy, also helping the side to seventh position in the final standings. Left in January 2014 after being anointed Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld's successor, taking the reins after the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Srečko Katanec Date of birth: 16 July 1963 Nationality: Slovenian Playing career: NK Olimpija Ljubljana, GNK Dinamo Zagreb, FK Partizan, VfB Stuttgart, UC Sampdoria Coaching career: Slovenia Under-21s, ND Gorica, Slovenia (twice), Olympiacos FC, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, United Arab Emirates • A centre-back or defensive midfielder, Katanec began his playing days at home-town club Olimpija before spells with Dinamo and Partizan. He reached the 1989 UEFA Cup final with Stuttgart and won the same competition the following season with Sampdoria, whom he also helped to the 1992 UEFA Champions League showpiece. • Earned 31 caps for Yugoslavia (five goals) – including at the 1984 UEFA European Championship, the 1984 Olympic Games and the 1990 FIFA World Cup – and five for Slovenia (one goal). • Started his coaching career with Slovenia's U21s in 1996, two years after retiring as a player. After a brief stint in the Gorica dugout, took charge of the senior Slovenia side in 1998 and guided them to UEFA EURO 2000 – their first major tournament – and the 2002 World Cup. • Joined Olympiacos in 2002 but stayed for only three months and in February 2006 assumed the FYROM helm, where he remained for three years. Named United Arab Emirates coach in June 2009, a position he held for two years. • Katanec was reappointed by Slovenia in January 2013 and is contracted until the end of UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying.

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 was the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.

Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
