CSCH President’s Address 2012 Church Historical Writing in the English Transatlantic World during the Age of Enlightenment1 DARREN W. SCHMIDT The King’s University College My research stemming from doctoral studies is focused on English- speaking evangelical use, interpretation, and production of church history in the eighteenth century, during which religious revivals on both sides of the North Atlantic signalled new developments on many fronts. Church history was of vital importance for early evangelicals, in ways similar to earlier generations of Protestants beginning with the Reformation itself. In the eighteenth century nerves were still sensitive from the religious and political intrigues, polemic, and outright violence in the seventeenth- century British Isles and American colonies; terms such as “Puritan” and “enthusiast” maintained the baggage of suspicion. Presumed to be guilty by association, evangelical leaders were compelled to demonstrate that the perceived “surprising work of God” in their midst had a pedigree: they accordingly construed their experience as part of a long narrative of religious ebb and flow, declension and revival. Time and time again, eighteenth-century evangelicals turned to the pages of the past to vindicate and to validate their religious identity.2 Browsing through historiographical studies, one is hard-pressed to find discussion of eighteenth-century church historical writing. There is general scholarly agreement that the Protestant Reformation gave rise to a new historical interest. In answer to Catholic charges of novelty, Historical Papers 2012: Canadian Society of Church History 188 Church Historical Writing in the English Transatlantic World Protestants critiqued aspects of medieval Catholicism and sought to show their continuity with early Christianity. -

Annotator as Ordinary Reader Accuracy, Relevance, and Editorial Method Michael Edson Abstract Like the notes in many eighteenth- and nineteenth-century editions of English poetry, Wil- liam Tooke’s explanatory annotations to the Poetical Works of Charles Churchill (1804) have been dismissed as inaccurate and irrelevant. Yet in drawing the bulk of his notes from newspapers and other popular print ephemera of Churchill’s lifetime (1732–64), Tooke (1777–1863) reveals both how Churchill fashioned his satires to appeal to periodical read- ers and how Churchill’s popularity depended on such readers seeking false or exaggerated rumors of celebrity scandal. In addition, by devaluing accuracy, authenticity, and relevance in their own selection of sources, Tooke’s notes raise questions about the place of accuracy and relevance in modern explanatory editing, suggesting that the emphasis on accuracy can sometimes lead to historically inaccurate readings. Inadequate seems too mild a word to describe how modern editors regard the printed notes in early poetry editions. Of William War- burton’s 1751 Works of Alexander Pope, Frederick Bateson observes, “the irrelevance and the verbosity” of the notes “must be read to be believed” (1951, xvi). Though infamous, Warburton’s notes are far from the only editorial explanations from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to offend. Zachary Grey’s 1744 explanatory notes to Samuel Butler’s Hudibras are “informative”, John Wilders admits, but Grey “could seldom resist the temptation to comment, even when he had little of relevance to say” (But- ler 1967, lx). Looking for Lovelace: Identity, Style and Inheritance in the Poetry of the Interregnum Thesis Submitted by Dosia Reichardt, BA (Hons) James Cook, BA York in September 2003 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Humanities Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences James Cook University Abstract This thesis discusses the work of the Cavalier poet Richard Lovelace in two contexts in particular: first, within the political and cultural constraints operating during the period of the English Civil War and the Interregnum; second, against the background provided by the work of contemporary, often obscure, poets whose aesthetic and political attitudes help illuminate Lovelace’s own. The study examines a number of apparent paradoxes in the work and status of poets in Lovelace’s milieu. The desire to fashion an individual and lasting literary persona in the mould of Ben Jonson, for example, conflicts with the practice of circulating essentially un-authored lyrics within an educated and exclusive male coterie. Lovelace’s amatory verse is viewed through the prism of contemporary attitudes towards female constancy, but also through seventeenth-century poets’ habitual borrowings from Latin and Greek sources. Lovelace’s attempt at a lengthy pastoral partakes of the cultural poetics of nostalgia for a vanished Court and the genres associated with it. His interest in music and the fine arts inspires many poems which comment on contemporary politics while participating in an immemorial debate about art and artificiality versus nature. His prison and drinking songs have earned him a place in anthologies of poetry as a minor classic, but they also crystallize a conjunction of genres peculiar to the years between 1640 and 1660. -

When these Satires were shown to Pope at a late period of his poetical career, he was so sensible of their merit as to wish he had seen 1 them sooner . I doubt not that every reader who takes them up for the first time will be surprised that so much sterling good sense, such nervous language, and such masterly ver- sification should not have commanded more popularity. Yet nothing can be less true than Warton's remark, that Hall is better known as a poet than as a prelate or polemic. The Ser- mons and Meditations of the divine retained 1 Warburton told Warton, that in a copy of Hall's Satires in Pope's library, the whole first satire of the sixth book was corrected in the margin, or interlined in Pope's own hand ; and that Pope had written at the head of that satire optima satira. -
