    National Inuit Suicide Prevention Strategy www.itk.ca About Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) is the national representational organization for Canada’s 60,000 Inuit, the majority of whom live in four regions of Canada’s Arctic, specifically, the Inuvialuit Settlement Region (Northwest Territories), Nunavut, Nunavik (Northern Quebec), and Nunatsiavut (Northern Labrador). Collectively, these four regions make up Inuit Nunangat, our homeland in Canada. It includes 53 communities and encompasses roughly 35 percent of Canada’s landmass and 50 percent of its coastline. The comprehensive land claim agreements that have been settled in Inuit Nunangat continue to form a core component of our organization’s mandate. These land claims have the status of protected treaties under section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 , and we remain committed to working in partnership with the Crown toward their full implementation. Consistent with its founding purpose, ITK represents the rights and interests of Inuit at the national level through a democratic governance structure that represents all Inuit regions. ITK advocates for policies, programs and services to address the social, cultural, political and environmental issues facing our people. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This thesis used traditional environmental knowledge (TEK) to assess the impacts of climate change on food security for First Nations communities located in the western James Bay region of northern Ontario. In addition, climate scenarios were derived from General Circulation Models (GCMs) and Regional Climate Models (RCMs). The TEK data revealed there were no observable climatic-related effects on fish species (i.e., distributional change) except the fish die-offs of July 2005. Climate data specific for the period of the fish die-offs in the Albany River (the western James Bay region) indicated not only a temporal relationship between a heat wave and the fish die-offs, but also a concurrent period of reduced precipitation. Climate scenarios showed increases in mean air temperature for all seasons, all time periods (2011– 2040, 2041– 2070, and 2071– 2100), and all emission scenarios (A2, A1B, and B1); however, the results for seasonal total precipitation were variable, dependent emission scenarios.

The population is gathered in 14 Inuit municipalities and a Cree village located along the coasts of Hudson Bay, Hudson Strait and Ungava Bay. They are Kuujjuarapik, Umiujaq, Inukjuak, Puvirnituq, Akulivik, Ivujivik, Salluit, Kangiqsujuaq, Quaqtaq, Kangirsuk, Aupaluk, Tasiujaq, Kuujjuaq and Kangiqsualujjuaq, and the Cree village of Whapmagoostui. These villages are not linked by road. -Between the 49th and 55th parallel, covering approximately 350 000 km2, is located the James Bay territory.

The photographic records presented in this Finding Aid were formerly in the collection of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND); now Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC). The Inuit Art Foundation is not the owner of the objects depicted in the photographic materials, and the collections where the works are currently held remain a rich area of future study. This Finding Aid is intended to provide public access and includes records that are partially processed.
