William James As American Plato? Scott Sinclair
WILLIAM JAMES AS AMERICAN PLATO? ______________________________________________________________________________ SCOTT SINCLAIR ABSTRACT Alfred North Whitehead wrote a letter to Charles Hartshorne in 1936 in which he referred to William James as the American Plato. Especially given Whitehead’s admiration of Plato, this was a high compliment to James. What was the basis for this compliment and analogy? In responding to that question beyond the partial and scattered references provided by Whitehead, this article briefly explores the following aspects of the thought of James in relation to Whitehead: the one and the many, the denial of Cartesian dualism, James’s background in physiology, refutation of Zeno’s paradoxes, religious experience, and other kinships. In the end, the author agrees with Robert Neville that James had seminal ideas which could correctly result in a complimentary analogy with Plato. Therefore, a greater focus on the important thought of James is a needed challenge in contemporary philosophy. Michel Weber provided a very helpful article in two parts entitled, “Whitehead’s Reading of James and Its Context,” in the spring 2002 and fall 2003 editions of Streams of William James. Weber began his article with a reference to Bertrand Russell: “When Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) visited Harvard in 1936, ‘there were two heroes in his lectures – Plato and James.’”1 Although he goes on to affirm that Whitehead could have said the same, Weber either overlooks the fact, or is not aware, that Whitehead actually did compare James to Plato in his January 2, 1936 hand-written letter to Charles Hartshorne, as printed by Whitehead’s biographer, Victor Lowe: European philosophy has gone dry, and cannot make any worthwhile use of the results of nineteenth century scholarship. -

Theorizing Gender Solidarity in Times of Global Power Shift
International Journal of Communication 8 (2014), 506–523 1932–8036/20140005 Developmental Bodies and the Occupation of Time: Theorizing Gender Solidarity in Times of Global Power Shift KATHERINE REILLY1 Simon Fraser University Global power shift (GPS) offers an opportunity to rethink assumptions underlying feminist theories of solidarity with a view toward more historically engaged theorizing. During the globalist moment, feminist critical theory relied on the idea of “transversity” as a foundation for the theorizing solidarity because it created a bridge between dualities (local–global, rationalism–postmodernism). More recently, feminist critical theory has turned to intersectionality as a means to redress the dualities inherent in transversity. I argue that expressions of transversal solidarity tended to reify historical sedimentation of power, while intersectional theories of solidarity emphasize collective identities at the expense of transformative agendas. Drawing on the work of Mendieta, Kompridis, and Trouillot, I propose we understand gender solidarity in terms of developmental bodies that occupy time such that women can engage with GPS in proactive ways. This resituates communication’s role in solidarity building as a conversation with history rather than a dialogue between identities. Introduction Much of the literature on contemporary global power shift (GPS) has been concerned with whether and how the changing fortunes of nation-states will influence the functioning of international institutions, their regulation of global markets, or the possibility of diplomatic breakdown leading to war (e.g., Altman, 2009; Ferguson, 2009; Hoge, 2004; Ross & Friedberg, 2009). But for critical theories, GPS challenges us to look beyond regime theories when trying to make sense of historical change. -

Introduction: The life of international law and its concepts Sahib Singh and Jean d’Aspremont ‘What meaning has the concept of murder, when we are confronted with the mass production of corpses?’1 Hannah Arendt asks this question of her readers as she attempts to understand the workings of totalitarianism. It may, though, also sound apt for today’s international law and its concepts. Contemporary international lawyers ply their trade knowing full well that significant parts of this law are structurally implicated in and perpetuate on-going economic and social injustices. Yet lawyers idealistically and increasingly resort to international law’s promises. How could our greater recourse to concepts such as universality, aggression, development, humanity or rights (to name but a few) not be tinged with a sense of futility? But this would miss Arendt’s point, for her question is a critique of how we are prone to think with concepts. Recourse to the concept of murder in order to understand, explain and evaluate the known horrors of the concentration camps meant giving in to a certain common sense. It was to concede to the ‘great temptation to explain away the intrinsically incredible by means of liberal rationalizations’.2 Modes of thought or attitudes that seek to reduce the complexities (and horrors) of our social world to inadequate categories are not merely unwarranted but potentially dangerous. It is, after all, not inadequate concepts or attempts to grasp the ungraspable and infinitely complex that Arendt indicts, but rather those who would do so by turning away from life and hence responsibility.3 Rather the question becomes: may we think of the relation(s) between concepts, life and living in international law? We broach this question in three sections. -

Thrownness, Attunement, Attention: A Heideggerian Account of Responsibility Darshan Cowles A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Philosophy University of Essex October 2017 Abstract: This thesis argues that Heidegger’s existential analytic of human existence challenges the traditional understanding of responsibility as lying in the power or mastery of the subject. In contrast to secondary literature that attempts to read Heidegger as showing that we take responsibility through some kind of self-determination or control, I argue that Heidegger’s account of our thrownness, and its first-personal manifestation in our attunement, contests such understandings and points to an account of responsibility that does not find its locus in the power of the subject. In light of this, I argue that taking responsibility for our being-in-the-world should be understood as becoming attentive. By emphasizing the ‘movement’ of thrownness and the meaning of this as finding ourselves always already gripped by way of being attuned, my analysis demonstrates the pervasive power of that which is beyond the subject. I show that we must always already find ourselves submitted to particular possibilities and, more fundamentally, to the enigma of being Dasein. From this analysis, and via the work of Harry Frankfurt, I demonstrate how our thrownness speaks against seeing responsibility for our being-in-the-world in terms of choice, rational judgement, or wholeheartedness. A further analysis of anxiety, contrasting with accounts which read it as manifesting a privileged space for freedom and self-determination, emphasizes the revelation of the ‘I’ as essentially bound to what is beyond it. -

Yet, development of the discipline dedicated to study and treat “madness,” that was to be referred to as “psychiatry,” began only in the late 18th century. Instrumental to this development was William Cullen (1712-1790), a professor of medicine and physics at the University of Edinburgh, in Scotland. Stimulated by the research of Boissier de Sauvages (1706-1767) at the University of Montpellier, in France, who described and classified diseases as botanists describe and classify plants (Sauvages 1768), Cullen (1769, 1777), classified diseases into four classes (pyrexias, neuroses, cachexias and locales), with as many as 19 orders and 132 genera (Doig, Ferguson, Milne and Passmore 1993). Cullen (1772), defined disease as an excess or deficiency of “sensibilities” in his Synopsis Nosologiae Methodicae and in his treatise published in 1777 with the title “First Lines of Practice 2 of Physic” he introduced the term “neuroses” for a class of disease he believed were -

It is the transition from God the void to God the enemy, and from God the enemy to God the companion. (RM 16)1 Introduction The present Whiteheadian dialogue between natural process theology and Whiteheadian scholarship exploits a tangential approach that will provide new ways of contrasting Whitehead’s worldview by adding a third unexpected speaker: Thomas, the Gnostic Jew who wrote his Gospel perhaps as early as 60 years after Jesus’ death and could thus have constituted an earlier corpus than the canonical gospels—and their hypothetical Q.2 Some readers might consider that the price to pay is too high to venture oneself on such a cross-interpretative path: there is no need to impose an unfashionable syncretic burden either on Whitehead or on Thomas; the inflexion required on each of them to bring them together is simply too demanding and totally unscientific anyway. At least four answers immediately come to mind: first, there is no such thing as a totally objective interpretation in these matters (even the “hard-core” scientific enterprise does not completely escape from the social construction of its issues); second, this hermeneutical wager carries important consequences for each party; third, the rapprochement is operational only at the level of the fundamental intuition—of course not at the level of the technicalities (for the most part absent in Thomas anyway); fourth, what matters above all is to highlight new ways of understanding the human condition, not to stick sclerotically to dead abstractions. -

He was the Director of the Humanities Center at Columbia University for seven years and is currently the Director of its South Asian Institute. Akeel got a B.A in English Literature from Elphinstone College, Bombay University and went to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar where he read Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. He has a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Chicago. His publications include the books Belief and Meaning (1992), Self-Knowledge and Resentment (2006), and Secularism, Identity and Enchantment (2014). He is due to publish two short books in the near future: What is a Muslim? and Gandhi's Integrity. Akeel Bilgrami has been leading the NOMIS series of workshops on Nature and Value since 2012. David Bromwich is Sterling Professor of English at Yale University. He received his PhD in Yale, was promoted Mellon Professor of English at Princeton University and returned to Yale where he became Sterling Professor in 2006. David is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has published widely on Romantic criticism and poetry, and on eighteenth-century politics and moral philosophy. WHAT BERGSON SHOULD HAVE SAID TO EINSTEIN1 Steven SAVITT Let me begin by repeating (changing only the name) a paragraph from a recent paper by David Chalmers: I should say that I am not a historian or a serious scholar of Bergson. These are merely some speculative remarks not well-grounded in scholarly attention to Bergson’s texts. But I think the speculative question is interesting. I’m going to sketch one speculative answer. I’m going to be interested to hear from people who know much more about Bergson than I do about whether this speculation has any remote plausibility. If the historical speculation has none, as may well be possible, I think there is still a very interesting philosophical project in the neighbourhood which is itself worthy of attention (Chalmers 2018). My speculative remarks concern the famous debate between Henri Bergson and Albert Einstein that took place in Paris on 6 April 1922. This encounter has recently received a book-length treatment (Canales 2015), but little of the substance of the debate was actually reported in it. -

Appendix! Fyodor Dostoevsky and Vladimir Solovyov* (In memory of Dr Nicolas M. Zernov, 1898-1980) The volume and scope of critical and commentarial literature devoted to Dostoevsky's thought in the century since his death is clear evidence of the richness and complexity encountered in his works. In the figure of Vladimir Solovyov - both in his person and his writings - we also encounter a high degree of complexity. Tracing the patterns of his thought, we find certain tensions and a number of striking incongruities. Here was - a man who was, at heart, a monarchist, but aroused the anger and suspicions of the Tsar and Holy Synod through his advocacy of theocratic government; a man who embraced so much that was characteristic of the Slavophiles, and yet was a staunch supporter of their arch-enemy, Peter the Great; a man so seemingly keen to reaffirm the worth of contemplative spirituality, but who personally resisted the decision to join a monastery, a step that he at one time regarded as 'flight' from the world. Those who knew Solovyov at first hand stressed what they regarded either as his sanctity or his eccentricity (his chudachestvo ). Accounts of the excitement generated by his university lectures on philosophy certainly show that he commanded a surprising degree of authority and respect. On the other hand, Solovyov had to contend with numerous uncharitable gibes and with accusations to the effect that he had set himself up as a 'prophet'. Perhaps his best response to adverse criticism of this kind was to deflate his *A Paper delivered at the VI Symposium of the International Dostoevsky Society, 9-16 August 1986, University of Nottingham.
