The GAA prides itself on being a volunteer-driven, sporting, cultural, and community organisation, the envy of many sporting, community and volunteering organisations across the globe. It is also a Club Development Tool, helping clubs to help themselves.

Tradition dictates that the work carried-out in our GAA clubs is of a standard which every GAA member can be proud of. Ulster GAA wish to recognise the sterling contribution of volunteerism in our clubs, while also laying-down foundations which will allow this culture to continue. To do this Ulster GAA have brought together GAA volunteers to establish core criteria on which clubs can benchmark themselves. The criteria have been divided into the following five areas:

1. Governance 2. Duty of Care 3. Community Enhancement 4. Culture & Heritage 5. Coaching & Games Development

Ulster GAA will offer guidance and support to clubs going through the process. The completion of the process will result in clubs gaining a better understanding of how good their club is, as well as ensuring best practice is standard in all clubs. Successful clubs will be awarded either bronze, silver, gold or platinum awards.

BRONZE Depicts a club with minimal operating standards. This club will have a structured committee, sports team, and will make provisions for Gaelic games and culture.

SILVER A good standard GAA club, providing Gaelic sport and a reasonable level of community activity and involvement.

GOLD An excellent GAA club, fully integrated with good facilities, providing Gaelic games for men and women, boys and girls, as well as cultural activities and delivering a good level of community activity and involvement.

PLATINUM An outstanding GAA club, fully integrated across all the Gaelic codes, with excellent facilities and providing cultural activities for its members as well as various community activities which ensure that the club is playing and active part in developing a vibrant local community.

The level of award obtained by clubs will be determined by the evidence provided by the club in their Club Maith Portfolio and Club Visit. As with all things GAA we know that clubs will strive to reach their full potential.

Sport NI and the Irish Sports Council have each endorsed the scheme. Clubs in the six counties will also receive the Sport NI Club mark NI award on completing the bronze level Club Maith award. It is likely that any future funding from either body will be subject to clubs having achieved Club Maith. Given the success of Club Maith thus far it is hoped to roll-out the programme nationwide. The award is ‘good’ for three years, requiring an annual online health-check. The health-check is very straightforward and will be a tick-box exercise only. After three years the club will have to go through the process again, however, all the spade-work will have been achieved by this stage!

How good is your Club? – Getting Started

The process is very straightforward.

Simply… 1. Download the Club Maith Application Form, complete and submit to Ulster GAA 2. Ulster GAA will acknowledge receipt of Initial Application Form, and direct you from there 3. Download the Club Maith Portfolio 4. Use the Club Maith Toolkit, and website Resources and Articles sections to access a raft of information you will find very helpful in completing your Portfolio. 5. Submit completed Club Maith Portfolio to Ulster GAA 6. Ulster GAA will acknowledge receipt of Club Maith Portfolio 7. Appointment of two Club Maith Facilitators by Ulster GAA for assessment of Club Maith Portfolio 8. Ulster GAA will liaise with Club and Facilitators to establish a date for Club Visit 9. Club Visit 10. Recommendation made to Ulster GAA Coiste Bainistí and conferment of Club Maith award to Club

Ulster GAA would recommend that clubs allow three months for completion of the process from start to finish. Obviously this is subject to how quickly clubs can submit their Club Maith Portfolio. For more information contact [email protected]
