Evaluation of Tortum Waterfall According to the Criteria Used in the Selection of Protected Areas in Turkey Pol. J. Environ. Stud. Vol. 23, No. 5 (2014), 1555-1563 Original Research Evaluation of Tortum Waterfall According to the Criteria Used in the Selection of Protected Areas in Turkey Metin Demir*, Serkan Özer Department of Landscape Architecture, Faculty of Architecture and Design, Atatürk University, 25240 Erzurum, Turkey Received: 4 August 2013 Accepted: 28 April 2014 Abstract For more than a century, several countries all over the world have taken certain areas under protection in order to protect their natural beauty and biological diversity. Today, protected areas, as well as their func- tion of protecting nature, are considered as areas contributing to human welfare, reduction of poverty, and sus- tainable development. In this study, it is established that with its landscape and natural landscape beauty, the Tortum Waterfall is visited by lots of tourists, especially in summer. The waterfall is the highest in Turkey and Europe and the third highest in the world at 48 m. The objective of our study is to refer to the current condition and impor- tance of the area needing protection and, therefore, continually promote and contributing to regional and national tourism. With a hydrophical valley and area of 205.5 ha, the research area has been studied in accor- dance with the natural protection criteria and necessity of protection has been suggested. Moreover, it has been stated that the Tortum Waterfall should be taken under protection as a “Natural Park” and emphasized that the improvement plans of the area need to be prepared quickly.
Accepted 8 June, 2011 In this study, clustering analysis was done by using date of road traffic accidents (RTAs) in districts of Erzurum in Turkey occurring at 2002 to 2007 years. Province of Erzurum has eighteen districts. Road surface situation, solstice, vehicle type and number of RTAs are used in clustering analysis. Clustering analysis was done by using both traditional k-means and fuzzy c-means techniques. Districts are divided five cluster by clustering analysis are done according to two techniques. Also five risk levels were identified by center values of clusters. Risk levels of districts were demonstrated in thematic maps. The thematic maps were constituted by using geographical information systems (GIS). The thematic maps demonstrated members of cluster that districts are separated by clustering analysis according to both traditional k-means and fuzzy c-means techniques. Results obtained from this study were compared. It was observed that fuzzy c-means technique gives accurate and consistent results at least k-means technique. Also, It was determined that GIS is advantageous to show and understand the results on the thematic maps.

  • Surveying Georgia's Past on the Use of Cartographic Sources For
Annali di Ca’ Foscari. Serie orientale [online] ISSN 2385-3042 Vol. 53 – Giugno 2017 [print] ISSN 1125-3789 Surveying Georgia’s Past On The Use Of Cartographic Sources For Caucasian History Patrizia Licini (Associazione Geografi Italiani, AGeI) Abstract This study represents the historical geographer’s approach to the History of cartography. Modern historians of the Roman Empire and archaeologists misuse geographical information from Ptolemy’s map of the Caucasus–Ptolemy’s 3rd Map of Asia in the standard set of twenty-seven maps, including a world map, all in the Ptolemaic model, with twenty-six regional maps. In fact, modern writers on ancient history think that the story of maps is linear–beginning, middle and end. But the case of Ptolemy is typical in that his work began to have a powerful influence in the fifteenth cen- tury. After Ptolemy’s death in the second half of the second century, however, his Geography had disappeared for a thousand years, and with it the idea of coordinate-based mapping according to a mathematical grid system. No original copies from Ptolemy’s own time have survived. A medieval Greek copy without maps only reappeared in fourteenth-century Florence, with maps first drawn by Florentine cosmographers in further copies in 1415. Here we have an antinomia, an apparent contradiction, which nothing but the History of cartography solves as “Ptolemy’s paradox”. Ptolemy’s maps of Roman Britain makes a striking contrast with the map showing our present state of knowl- edge about the British Isles. It has long been recognized as a puzzling fact that, in Ptolemy’s map of the British Isles, the shape of Britain is turned abruptly to the east from the latitude 55° north, cor- responding to Scotland, so as to make a right angle with the southern part of the country–England and Wales.

CEU eTD Collection Abstract The aim of my research is to analyze the position of two Armenian officers’ memoir who participated the First World War in the Ottoman Army. In order to do so, I will examine the memoirs of the Second Lieutenant Kalusd Sürmenyan, who wrote a part of his book on his hometown Erzincan in 1947, and Captain Sarkis Torosyan, who published his memoirs in the Unites States of America in 1947. To accomplish the analysis of these historical texts and their context, the two research questions will direct my study: first, deals with how these officers were seen and remembered by Turkish historiography, either through their treatment or their erasure, while the second attempts to re-consider the end of the Ottoman empire turning to these two army officers themselves and expressing their memories and experiences.

  • Map 87 Pontus-Phasis Compiled by David Braund and T
Map 87 Pontus-Phasis Compiled by David Braund and T. Sinclair (Turkey), 1997 with the assistance of Diane Braund Introduction Pontus The land of Pontus has two main parts, both of which belonged to the Mithridatic kingdom of Pontus in the Hellenistic period. The first is the main ridge of the Pontic mountains and the steep descent to the shore. The lower slopes are thickly wooded, and the shore districts have a humid and rainy climate. In the main Pontic ridge a gap occurs in the hinterland of Amisus (modern Samsun), after which the mountain chain continues at a lower height and with less abrupt slopes (Strabo’s term Paryadres seems to denote the higher part of the chain). As far east as Rhizaion (Rize) Greek settlements along the coast have existed since the sixth century B.C., and in the case of Sinope the seventh. To the south, the Pontic chain is bordered by Armenia Minor, a part of Armenia itself (Late Antique Sper, probably the Syspiritis of the classical authors), and what was to become the Georgian mountainous district of Tao, drained by the R. Glaukos (Oltu Çay) and the Tortum Çay. The district of Chaldia, the Gümüşhane basin, is difficult to classify, particularly in classical times, as there is no evidence that it belonged either to Pontus (in a geographical or administrative sense), to Armenia Minor, or to Armenia itself. The Roman empire made no effort to control the interior of Chaldia until the reign of Justinian. The second part of Pontus is the series of fertile inland plains, joined by relatively low chains of hills, in the river systems of the Iris (Kızıl Irmak) and the lower Halys (Yeşil Irmak).

ÇORUH VADİSİ (TAO) VE OLTU’NUN OSMANLI HÂKİMİYETİNE GİRMESİ Ahmet AYDIN* Özet: Doğu Anadolu’yu Kafkaslara bağlayan bir geçiş bölgesi olan Çoruh vadisi tarihin ilk dönemlerinden beri önemini korumuştur. Alpaslan’ın bölgeye yaptığı akımlarla Türkleşmeye başlayan bölge I. Selim döneminin başından itibaren Osmanlı hâkimiyetine girmeye başlamıştır.
