(August 23, 2019) ⎯ Music Maker Productions and MSU’s WMSV Radio presents a Welcome Back Show in honor of the station's 25th anniversary. The event will begin at 8 p.m. at the MSU Amphitheater on the campus of Mississippi State University and will be open to the public. Wrap the Vote will include festival style activities, voter information for Election Day, and a national act. J.I.D will kick off at 9 p.m. J.I.D is an American rapper born and raised in East Atlanta. The Atlanta rapper’s career began in 2012 after joining Atlanta-based collective Spillage Village where he further developed his skills and dropped his DiCaprio EP. J.I.D released his debut album The Never Story in March of 2017 after signing with Interscope Records and Dreamville Records, a label established by Grammy nominated artist and producer J. Cole. The release of his debut single “Never” generated significant interest from the devoted hip-hop community. Since signing with J. Cole and releasing his debut album, J.I.D has been featured in a BET Awards cypher, made the XXL 2018 Freshman Class, and has worked with numerous successful rappers and producers, including Mac Miller. His highly anticipated sophomore album DiCaprio 2 is set to release in the fall of this year. In this extended case study, I examine the ways in which young Black cis-hetero male creators living in Atlanta, Georgia employ the use of counter-frames to navigate and resist the dominant white racial frame. Specifically, I analyze their use of double consciousness, freedom, and alchemical capitalism as counter-frames as resistance. I advocate for a nuanced approach to examining resistance strategies that includes embracing imperfect and incomplete acts of resistance. By examining these resistance strategies, despite their faults, perhaps we can continue working toward a more complete eradication of oppression.
