A Guide to Parish Registers The Kent History and Library Centre Introduction This handlist includes details of original parish registers, bishops' transcripts and transcripts held at the Kent History and Library Centre and Canterbury Cathedral Archives. There is also a guide to the location of the original registers held at Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre and four other repositories holding registers for parishes that were formerly in Kent. This Guide lists parish names in alphabetical order and indicates where parish registers, bishops' transcripts and transcripts are held. Parish Registers The guide gives details of the christening, marriage and burial registers received to date. Full details of the individual registers will be found in the parish catalogues in the search room and community history area. The majority of these registers are available to view on microfilm. Many of the parish registers for the Canterbury diocese are now available on www.findmypast.co.uk access to which is free in all Kent libraries. Bishops’ Transcripts This Guide gives details of the Bishops’ Transcripts received to date. Full details of the individual registers will be found in the parish handlist in the search room and Community History area. The Bishops Transcripts for both Rochester and Canterbury diocese are held at the Kent History and Library Centre. Transcripts There is a separate guide to the transcripts available at the Kent History and Library Centre. These are mainly modern copies of register entries that have been donated to the -

Appendix 1 DRAFT SHEPWAY CONTAMINATED LAND STRATEGY November 2011 Page 1 of 54 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Councils objectives This Council has four strategic objectives within its Corporate Plan. This Strategy is presented in the context of the Council’s Corporate Plan. The objectives that relate directly to the Contaminated Land Inspection can be viewed in Chapter 1, section 1.1. The Council’s priorities Dealing with contaminated land is a complex issue, often where available information is limited. For each site it will be important to balance the relevant issues and to move forward in a logical and methodical manner. A prioritised list of the Council’s aims has therefore been devised to aid decision-making. The Council’s priorities in dealing with contaminated land will be: 1. To protect human health and controlled waters used for drinking purposes 2. To protect other controlled waters 3. To protect designated ecosystems 4. To prevent damage to property 5. To prevent any further contamination of land 6. To encourage voluntary remediation 7. To encourage re-use of brownfield land This list is presented in priority order and in all cases the Council will have regard to significance and likelihood, as required by the regulations. The Council’s inspection timetable The Council has a total of seven top priority potential sites of contamination (see table 3). Six of these sites require reassessment, revisiting or reviewing before the end of 2012 and one site requires remediation as soon as funding for the project becomes available. If any of these sites, following the planned reassessment, revisit or review, requires remediation, this is expected to take a further 18 to 24 months. -

Summary The district is rich in archaeological evidence beginning from the first occupations by early humans in Britain 800,000 years ago through to the twentieth century. The archaeological remains are in many forms such as ruins, standing monuments and buried archaeology and all attest to a distinctive Kentish history as well as its significant geographical position as a gateway to the continent. Through the district’s archaeology it is possible to track the evolution of Kent as well as the changing cultures, ideas, trade and movement of different peoples into and out of Britain. The District’s role in the defence of the country is also highlighted in its archaeology and forms an important part of the archaeological record for this part of the British southern coastline. -
Church Plate in Kent. Parochial Inventories: Acrise to Canterbury
Archaeologia Cantiana Vol. 17 1887 ( 241 ) CHURCH PLATE IN KENT. BY CANON SCOTT ROBERTSON. PAET II. PAROCHIAL INVENTORIES. ACEISE. PBOM information furnished by the Eev. Edward Newenham Hoare, Eector of Acrise, I learn that the Communion. Vessels used in St. Martin's Church, at Aerise, are (i.) An Elizabethan Cup (1562) of Silver, with Cover; (ii.) A Silver Paten (1702) ; (iii.) An old Alms- plate of Pewter; (iv.) A modern Magon of Glass; and (v.) a mo- dern Alms-dish of Wood. The CUP is 6 inches high, and 3J inches in diameter at the- mouth. Upon its bell-shaped bowl are engraved two horizontal belts, each formed of sprigs of woodbine running between two fillets which interlace three times, at points equi-distant from each other. The fillets are filled with plain JP"-Kke chasing. The stem has a knop, formed of one large round moulding between two smaller ones. Immediately above and below the stem is a moulding of small con- tiguous lozenges. The foot is simply moulded. Near the mouth of the cup, in the upper belt of engraving, are four SALL-HARKS— (i.) badly impressed; perhaps a star; (ii.) leopard's head crowned; (iii.) lion passant; (iv.) date letter $ for A.D. 1562-8. The COVER to this cup has but one MASK, which appears upon its rim. It seems to be L.O. with a small cross or mullet beneath it. The cup and cover together weigh 9-| ounces avoirdupois. The PATEN, 5£ inches in diameter, is of the purer quality of silver called New Sterling, and stands on a central conical foot. -

AUGUSTINE. BY GORDON WARD, M.D., F.S.A. THE Domesday Monachorum is an ancient manuscript book preserved in the Chapter Library at Canterbury. It has recently been pubhshed in the third volume of the V.C.H. of Kent but with little editing or discussion. It commences with a list of churches and of the dues which they paid to the Archbishop at Easter. This is foUowed by a second hst from which it is seen that certain churches had others grouped under them in the manner of rural deaneries. The third hst contains only a few names and contains a statement of the dues paid " before the coming of Lord Lanfranc the Archbishop ". At the end of this last is a sentence to the effect that " what is before written " was ordained and instituted by Lanfranc. This can hardly refer to the dues before his coming (although it has actually been read in this sense) and so must apply to the first two lists. It foUows that these hsts were compiled in the time of Lanfranc (1070- 1089). But we can go further than this. The second hst includes the churches subordinate to MUton Regis and Newington by Sittingbourne. These are stated to have been given by the Conqueror to the Abbey of St. Augustine in 1070 (Reg. Regum Anglo-Norm. 35, 39). -
