  • What Happened at Piprahwa
1 What happened at Piprahwa: a chronology of events relating to the excavation in January 1898 of the Piprahwa Stupa in Basti District, North-Western Provinces and Oude (Uttar Pradesh), India, and the associated ‘Piprahwa Inscription’, based on newly available correspondence. Charles Allen Background Writing in the pages of the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society in January 2012, Dr Michael Willis, Curator of early South Asian and Himalayan collections at the British Museum and author of Buddhist Reliquaries from Ancient India (London 2000), declared the Piprahwa inscription to be ‘in all likelihood a forgery made by A. A. Führer’i. Exactly a century earlier the same scholarly journal had carried a very similar expression of concern from the Pali scholar Prof. Heinrich Lüders, raising for the first time in public doubts that had hitherto circulated largely in privateii. Both Willis and Lüders had the same culprit in mind: Dr. Anton Alois Führer, who in September 1898 had resigned from his post as Curator of Lucknow Museum and Archaeological Surveyor to the Government of the North-Western Provinces and Oude (NWP&O), after being charged with ‘falsification of his correspondence with several Governments’, but with further charges of plagiarism, forgery and corruption hanging over himiii. The scandal had been effectively hushed up by the Government of India and Dr. Führer’s last official publicationiv had been withdrawn and suppressed. However, Prof. Lüders’ article showed how Dr. Führer had invented a number of inscriptions supposedly found by him at Ramnagar in Rohilkhand 1891-2, in some instances basing them on genuine inscriptions logged in Epigraphia Indica.

  • Striptwist Ltd 55 Florin Court, Charterhouse Square, London, EC1M 6EU
Striptwist Ltd 55 Florin Court, Charterhouse Square, London, EC1M 6EU Report on the beads and related objects from the Piprahwa stupa Introduction Piprahwa is a village near Birdpur in the Siddharthnagar district Uttar Pradesh, very close to the present Nepalese border. In 1897/8 William Claxton Peppé excavated a mound on his land. Among the finds was a vase with a Brahmi inscription identifying the site as a relic stupa of Buddha, and beads and related objects, a selection of which remained in the Peppé family. The Peppe group is collectively described as ‘beads’ in what follows for the sake of convenience, although not all are strictly speaking beads – the group contains objects that are small pendants, parts of what seem to be composite flowers, ‘buttons’ or appliqué ornaments, gold foil disks and unpierced stones, pearls and coral. This report is based on an examination of these beads on two occasions and with the limited time available only a small proportion of the beads could be studied in detail microscopically or gemmologically. A fuller study is highly recommended for the future when more time is available and analytical facilities, ideally Raman spectrography, available to provide accurate and non-destructive identification of all the materials. Most of the objects are very fine quality examples of lapidary work. This high quality is particularly noticeable if the group is compared with most other ‘stupa’ finds from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and India. Considering the Piprahwa finds, and other beads from India, it is noteworthy that quality is often inversely proportional to size. It says much for the religious or ruling elite who would have owned or commissioned such ornaments – for them quality was as important as quantity The materials The beads are made of a variety of materials, including amethyst, aquamarine (blue beryl), carnelian (and etched carnelian and sardonyx), coral, citrine (yellow quartz), coral, garnet, glass, green chalcedony, iolite, pearl, rock crystal and shell.

  • Intra-District Variations and Emerging Concerns in Agricultural Development of Siddharthnagar District, Uttar Pradesh
The Indian Geographical Journal Volume 96 (1) June - 2021, pp 1-14 ISSN 0019-4824 INTRA-DISTRICT VARIATIONS AND EMERGING CONCERNS IN AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT OF SIDDHARTHNAGAR DISTRICT, UTTAR PRADESH Rajesh Kumar Abhay1 and Shweta Rani1 1Department of Geography, Dyal Singh College, University of Delhi, New Delhi E-mail : [email protected] Abstract A higher level of development in the agriculture sector contributes positively to the economic condition and livelihood security of the farmers. In India, more than 60% of the population lives in villages and is highly dependent on agriculture for their socio-economic well-being. Agricultural development is one of the major challenges in the less developed districts in the country as these are poor in terms of natural resources and also in socio- economic aspects. The study area, Siddharthnagar district, has more than 93% of rural population which is mainly dependent on agriculture. The present study is concerned with the analysis of intra-district variations in agricultural development measured with the help of 10 selected indicators which are processed through the composite index method. The study uses secondary data sources on various indicators which are combined into 4 groups representing agricultural extent, fertilizers use and cropping intensity, irrigation status, and availability of modern tools and technology. The results show wide variations in the agricultural development at the block level which ranges from 0.89 in Mithwal and Khesraha blocks to 1.16 in Uska Bazar blocks and represent the least and very highly developed block in agriculture, respectively. The study also identifies emerging concerns like limited scope to extend agriculture, high dependence on food grain crops, comparatively low cropping intensity, efficient use of water in irrigation, etc.
