Due to the renovation work the hotel was closed for public in March 2007. This renovation has resulted in a new categorization of the hotel and in opening a modern hotel made to measure of modern business users but also to measure of all those people who wish to enjoy in Zrenjanin, in the authentic atmosphere of this region and its numerous cultural and entertaining events. To illustrate this claim we could mention that the staff of Vojvodina hotel is hurriedly preparing the hotel for obtaining a HACCP certificate which guarantees a constant quality of service on the level of the hotels which operate within the European Union countries and the countries members of the World Trade Organisation. Our greatest advantage is a completed system of supplies, since every day the hotel gets from the parent company Matijevic fresh ingredients for cooking various dishes of domestic and international cuisine. Today the Vojvodina hotel has the capacity of: 92 accommodation units, 76 of which are rooms [single, double and twin], 11 suites, 4 business suites and 1 room for the persons with special needs. Within the hotel there are two restaurants with a first-class menu which can host 400 people, a business center and a conference room with the most modern equipment and 260 seats, two smaller meeting rooms with 30 seats each, as well as a spa and fitness center. Apart from accommodating guests, the hotel can organize business conventions, conferences as well as festival and other programmes in the best possible way. Hotel Vojvodina has: 76 modernly equipped rooms, 35 double rooms and 41 twin rooms. For the purpose of providing the same, first-class treatment for all its guests, the hotel has taken care of equipping a room which is adjusted to the persons with special needs. For the guests who look for some special conveniences and comfort, the hotel offers 11 suites and 4 business suites. All the rooms have a bathroom [with a shower or a bath and a hairdryer], a mini-bar, a TV set, a direct telephone line, an Internet connection as well as thermoregulation for adjusting the temperature. Observing the high standards of modern hotel-keeping, we have separated floors for smokers and non-smokers. The hotel Conference Hall: with 260 seats is suitable for the needs and demands of business users. The hall is ideal for organizing congresses, seminars, business meetings, presentations, trainings and for organizing other business activities. The hall has modern multimedia equipment. We also believe that it is necessary to forget completely, whenever possible, the exhausting tempo of living which is imposed to us by our business needs. Our Spa Center gives the hotel guests an opportunity to relax and enjoy to the full whenever they need this. Zrenjanin Serbia Zrenjanin has many places of interest like City Hall, the Cathedral, Freedom Square, King Aleksandar I Street, etc. Hotel "Vojvodina" is situated on Liberty Square. A neighboring spa "Rusanda" in Melenci with famous healing mud and even more famous "shepherd" [lamb] stew. Hunting tourism and fishing. Ecka. Carska bara. Ornithological fauna. And in the very town? Many remnants of the middle-class building, a lot of unusual stories, a lot of curiosities. Face of the town. From Trg slobode [Freedom Square] do Trg Republike [Square of Republic]. Baroque building of the Zrenjanin Municipality [from 1820], Catholic church [with famous organ from 1864, Library "Zarko Zrenjanin" [you should buy book written by Todor Manojlovic], inevitable Mc Donalds [all ingredients are domestic but the formula is foreign!], The Bence palace, The Uspen Orthodox Temple [1743], Pedestrian bridge [the very place where the Beckerek bridge was located previously]. When you cast a round glance, you will see the most beautiful ambient area of the town: Music school, High school, Cultural Center, Reformation Church, court palace and an unusual rarity - remnants of the town Begej river course which is now called The Lake. __________________________________________________________ page 2 / 10 Ecka Only nine kilometers south of the Zrenjanin center there is Ecka - the best known place on the tourist map of the town and its neighborhood. There are several reasons for this. Previously, this was the seat of the Lazar counts aristocracy. Lazar Lukac, an Armenian from Erdelj, has bought in 1781. the huge property from the Vienna palace and was the founder of the family which ruled Ecka for whole 160 years. Their castle "Kastel", which was raised in the English style, has become the center of the social and cultural life greater than in the Beckerek itself. In this settlement, in which Serbs and Rumanians live in harmony for ages, the attention of a guest should be paid to the three buildings of spiritual and building culture: Serbian and Rumanian Orthodox and Catholic church. From Ecka you reach the same-named fishpond quickly [2 km], which is famous in Europe. Finally, Ecka has a significant place on the Fine Arts map of Yugoslavia. For four decades there is an Art Colony here and a collection of modern art today contains more than two thousand paintings and is being enriched every year. __________________________________________________________ Kastel Ecka An aristocracy castle of the Lazar counts in Ecka was built in 1820. by Lazar Agoston. The entire Ecka was owned then by this rich Armenian family. At the opening ceremony of this castle, count Esterhazi, the richest aristocrat of Hungary from that time was present, and the nine-years old music talent Franc List played the piano and amazed everyone present with his talent. For many years after this pompous events relating to the opening of the Ecka castle, people kept talking about those unforgettable days when even the poorest villager felt the joy of this unusual celebration. The castle and its beautiful surrounding was used by the Lazar family until 1893. when its last descendant died. The estate heads kept changing until the end of the II World War. Turned into a hotel and a restaurant, the Ecka castle "Kastel" attracts the attention of visitors even today and its surrounding silently witnesses about the rich and tumultuous history created here for centuries Melenci - On the sixteenth kilometer of the Zrenjanin - Kikinda road, north of the town, there is a place called Melenci - one of the biggest Vojvodina villages on the edge of which, in the pine wood, there is a spa and a resort Spa Rusanda, famous far and wide for its mud bath which was exported previously into the European capitals. In Melenci, there is also one of the last preserved mills on wind - the Bosnjak windmill. At the Orthodox cemetery, there is an unique Chapel of Dimitrijevic, the iconostasis of which was painted by one of the greatest Serbian painters Uros Predic. The Bosnjak Windmill - The Bosnjak windmill at the exit of Melenci towards Kikinda was built in 1891. It had three pairs of milling stones and all sorts of grains were milled there. Today, it is one of the two preserved windmills in Banat. According to a register from 1885, there were 280 windmills in Banat and Backa. __________________________________________________________ The Rusanda SPA - The special hospital for physical medicine and rehabilitation "Rusanda" officially started to work on May 20th 1867 as an endowment of Josif and Ana Klaic to the "griveous Serbian people".

  • Subotica Profilex
Subotica Intercultural Profile Background The Kosztolányi Dezső Theatre describes Subotica as at ‘the entrance to the European Union, and the limit to the Balkan region’ and as ‘an open-minded city, full of possibilities’. In the past 150 years it has been part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, Hungary (twice), the two manifestations of Yugoslavia and its successor states, and now Serbia. Roads out of the city lead variously to Hungary, Romania, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, connecting hundreds of thousands of people of various nationalities and religions, immigrants and emigrants, relatives and mixed marriages. Subotica has an unusual, in some ways unique, ambience. One explanation of the derivation of its Hungarian name, Sabatka, is that it means ‘free place’ and Subotica’s citizens did buy their freedom in the 18 th century from Maria Theresa of Austria. This has allowed of a history of individual liberty (and entrepreneurship) more conducive to the idea of intercultural tolerance than collectivistic, nationalistic ideologies. Thus the city always voted for opposition parties during the Milošević years and the nationalistic parties are barely represented in the City Assembly. The Subotica-born writer Danilo Kiš encapsulated the multi-ethnic city thus: ‘Subotica: Kosztolányi, synagogue, baroque town hall … multilingualism’. The municipality has three official languages: Hungarian, Serbian and Croatian—although the latter two have their common root in Serbo-Croat. The demographic breakdown of Subotica is: Hungarians 38.5 per cent, Serbs 24.1, Croats 11.2, Bunjevci 11.0 per cent and 17.2 per cent comprising self- defined Yugoslavs, Montenegrins, Roma, Albanians, Ruthenians and others.

Original scientific paper Abstract. To select a suitable logistic center (LC) location it is necessary to do a comprehensive spatial analysis. Geographic information systems (GIS) are ideal for this type of spatial analysis which provides functionality to capture, store, and query, as well as analyze geographic information. The paper presents novel methodology for a LC location analysis based on GIS and SWOT analyses. The proposed method uses a GIS for data collection, spatial analysis, generating alternatives, and producing maps for further analysis. We used the GIS to support decision-making and for an analysis of the location attributes, including a number of relevant factors, namely spatial position, intermodal connections (road, water, air and rail transport), the size of the available location, topography, local traffic connections, environment, ecological aspect of the location, ownership structure, equipment of communal infrastructure, constraints in the area, etc. We used the SWOT analysis to determine strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the local area for attracting capital, knowledge and innovation. Experimental results on real-world problems, i.e., application of the proposed comprehensive methodology in a case study of a location analysis for the logistic center in the Municipality of Apatin, Vojvodina, Serbia, show that the proposed methodology provides upstanding results in the spatial analysis.

Results of amino acid racemization geochronology confirmed middle- and late-Pleistocene ages of Ruma’s loess-paleosol sequences, and correlates with aminostratigraphic subdivisions at other Central European sites. Paleopedological analyses describe morphology, mineralogy, grain-size distribution and carbonate content of the sediments and paleosols. Five paleosol levels represent the environmental transition from humid forest environments to relatively dry steppe interglacial landscapes during the last about 350 ka. Especially interesting are thick pedogenic layers formed in distinct paleo-depressions, which were created during the last glacial cycle. These horizons provide proxy data useful in the detailed reconstruction of environmental conditions during marine oxygen-isotope stages 5 and 3. Migration Profile Country perspective EXTENDED VERSION Serbia In the framework of MMWD – Making Migration Work for Development, the WP7 activities foresee the launch of a Transnational Platform for Policy Dialogue and Cooperation as an effort to support governments to address the consequence of Demographic trends on SEE territories. In particular, this platform will involve policy makers and decision makers at the national and sub-national level to promote the adoption of more effective services and regulations of the migration flows across the SEE area. In order to support and stimulate the dialogue within the Platform ad hoc migration profiles (MPs) will be developed for each partner country and will integrate the information and knowledge already provided by Demographic projections and Policy scenarios. The current MP focuses on the case of Serbia and it’s centred around five topics: resident foreign population by gender, age cohorts and citizenship; population flows (internal migration, emigration, immigration); immigrants presence in the national labour market; foreign population by level of educational attainment; remittances/transfers of money to country of origin. • Worshipping the Dead in 18Th Century Serbia. the Example of Bela Crkva
WORSHIPPING THE DEAD IN 18TH CENTURY SERBIA. THE EXAMPLE OF BELA CRKVA CLAUDIA MAYR-VESELINOVIĆ The 18th century was a century of changes in the Balkans. Due to the transfer of the Potiska i Pomoriska vojna granica at the end of the first half of the 18th century, the Habsburg’s military boarder went from the Croatian costal area via the Banat to Transylvania (the historical region Siebenbürgen). The Austrian empress Maria Theresia (1717-1780) had her own plans for this region: In the 1740s, plans for the settlement (or colonialisation) and therefore, the resettlement of the already existing population was translated into practice. The religious diversity of the Vojvodina became even more diverse. These changes are still visible today in many cities and towns throughout the province of Vojvodina. In Bela Crkva, a town founded in 1717 due to the inclusion of the Banat into the Habsburg monarchy. Until this very day, houses of worship are present and in use, the Serbian Orthodox church Sv. Petra I Pavla, the roman-catholic church Sv. Ana, the Russian Orthodox Church Sv. Jovana Bogoslova and the Romanian Orthodox church, except for the Protestant church (due to historical reasons, the former German population of the town is on the merge of existing, church services are not held anymore). In addition, there was also a synagogue (one of the two in the southern Banat), built in 1835 and destroyed in 1950. Did the coexistence of different faiths and ethnicities influence religious everyday rites, like worshipping the dead? WHY BELA CRKVA AND WORSHIPPING OF THE DEAD? Bela Crkva is one of the cities that were created in the area of the historical Banat during the time of the German colonisation in the 18th century (more details below).

The research adopts a GIS-based approach to spatially analyse tourist arrivals in Serbia, using Global Moran’s I and Anselin’s Local Moran’s I statistics applied on the level of municipalities. To assess feasibility of this approach the article discusses spatial changes of tourist arrivals in order to identify potentially significant trends of interest for tourism development policy in Serbia. There is a significant spatial inequality in the distribution of tourism arrivals in Serbia that is not adequately addressed in tourism development plans. The results of global autocorrelation suggest the existence of low and decreasing spatial clustering for domestic tourist arrivals and high, rel- atively stable spatial clustering for international tourists. Local autocorrelation statistics revealed differ- ent of domestic and international tourism arrivals. In order to assess feasibility of this approach these results are discussed in their significance to tourism development policy in Serbia. Keywords: Spatial autocorrelation, GIS, tourist arrivals, Serbia Introduction Tourist flows have been studied at different state Spatial inequality of tourism development is pro- levels, from micro-level to the - level of a destina- nounced in Serbia. • The Use of Hungarian and Serbian in the City of Szabadka/Subotica: an Empirical Study.” Hungarian Cultural Studies
Ferdinand, Siarl and Flora Komlosi. “The Use of Hungarian and Serbian in the City of Szabadka/Subotica: An Empirical Study.” Hungarian Cultural Studies. e-Journal of the American Hungarian Educators Association, Volume 10 (2017) DOI: 10.5195/ahea.2017.278 The Use of Hungarian and Serbian in the City of Szabadka*/Subotica: An Empirical Study Siarl Ferdinand and Flora Komlosi Abstract: In this study Ferdinand and Komlosi analyze the use of Hungarian and Serbian in the city of Szabadka/Subotica, which is located in the Serbian region of Northern Vajdaság/Vojvodina. A mostly Hungarian speaking city for centuries, Szabadka/Subotica suffered the strong pro-Serbian language policy implemented by the Yugoslavian government from the end of the First World War until the dismantlement of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, which gave Hungarian and other local minority languages a second chance to survive. Nowadays, Szabadka/Subotica is home to two main language groups, southern Slavic languages such a Serbian and Croatian (over sixty per cent) and Hungarian (thirty three per cent). Although Ferdinand and Komlosi employed official figures from the Serbian censuses to determine the size of each group, the situation of each language was mapped through empirical observation of language use in informal conversations, in official signage, and in permanent as well as temporary commercial signage. The results show that the role of Serbian (mostly written in Latin script) is dominant in almost all spheres of public life and as a lingua franca among various groups. Nevertheless, Hungarian maintains a strong presence in the city, especially in the center and in its northwestern districts.
