Although the reintroduction of flight services between Phuket and Haad Yai next month is wonderful news for Phuket, one has to won- der if there is sufficient demand for the service to support two carri- ers [see Business, page 32]. Since Phuket’s ill-fated namesake carrier Phuket Air abandoned the route in 2005, there has been no flight service between the south’s two main tourism hubs. People needing to travel from one to the other have been faced with several dubious options: fly all the way to Bangkok to get a connecting flight; make a circuitous seven-hour drive by car or van; or spend nine hours or longer by “VIP” coach. Over the past 18 months, Phuket has suffered as a result of its inability to better tap into the Malaysian tourism market, which in- cludes large numbers of affluent ethnic Chinese who enjoy cultural links with their counterparts in Phuket. Others who will benefit in- clude visa runners and international tourists making their way be- tween Singapore and Bangkok.
