(P. granatum L. and P. protopunica Balf.f.), and twelve closely related taxa of the order Myrtales based on sequence of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) and the 5.8S coding region of the nuclear ribosomal DNA. All the accessions of the Punica grouped into a distinct clade with strong support in Bayesian, Maximum Likelihood and Maximum Parsimony analyses. Trapaceae showed the most distant relationship with other members of Lythraceae s.l. Phylogenetic tree exclusively generated for 42 representative taxa of the family Lythraceae s.l., revealed similar clustering pattern of Trapaceae and Punicaceae in UPGMA and Bayesian trees. All analyses strongly supported the monophyly of the family Lythraceae s.l., nevertheless, the sister relation with family Onagraceae is weakly supported. The analyses of the ITS sequences of Punica in relation to the other taxa of the family Lythraceae s.l., revealed that the genus Punica is distinct under the family Lythraceae, however this could be further substantiated with comparative sequencing of other phylogenetically informative regions of chloroplast and nuclear DNA. -

Nowadays, besides its use as a fruit, its medicinal properties have attracted the interest of researchers of many countries. Pomegranate fruit has medicinal properties such as anti- inflammatory and antibacterial activities. The pomegranate seed oil has inhibitory effect on skin and breast cancers. The pomegranate seed oil has phytoestrogenic compounds and the fruit is rich in phenolic compounds with strong antioxidant activity. Ellagic acid is one of the main components of pomegranate with phenolic structure and antioxidant activity. Vestures are small projections from the secondary cell wall associated with tracheary elements of the secondary xylem. They are usually associated with bordered pits and characterize various angiosperm families, including important timber species such as Dipterocarpaceae and Eucalyptus trees. The micromorphology and distribution of vestures were studied in 22 species representing all families within the order Myrtales based on light and scanning electron microscopy. Vestures are consistently present near the outer pit aperture of bordered vessel pits, suggesting the synapomorphic character of this feature for the entire order. It is unclear in which geological period this feature originated in the evolution of the pre- Myrtalean lineages. In some species vestures are associated with inner pit apertures, inner vessel walls, simple perforation plates, depressions of the cell wall and bordered pits of tracheids or fibre-tracheids. A compact network of branched vestures almost completely filling the entire pit chamber is the most common vestured pit type in Myrtales, although considerable variation may occur within a wood sample. The micromorphology of vestures seems to some extent correlated with quantitative pit characters. -

Corresponding Author: Khushboo Jain ABSTRACT Pomegranate (Punica granatum) is most adapted subtropical fruit crop, which was introduced in India during 15th century from the Mediterranean region. India is largest grower, producer and exporter of pomegranate since last decade. Among eight major pomegranate growing states, Maharashtra is the largest producer, occupies 70.2% of total area in the country with average productivity of 13.24 MT. In recent years, there is decline in production in Maharashtra due to a disease like anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum sp. Colletotrichum causes the infection on all plant parts as sub circular or angular black lesions results in stem deformation, defoliation during shoot development, death of inflorescences, necrotic lesions on leaves. The productivity has decreased though the land coverage has increased in last decade. Under unfavorable climatic conditions this disease has caused yield loss of up to 100%. This review sheds light on the production, agricultural practices, crop biology and diseases of pomegranate causing crop losses. It highlights the epidemiology, symptoms and management strategies for common diseases in pomegranate. It has been observed that, due to monoculture practices and change in environment, the disease like anthracnose causes tremendous losses. Therefore, it warrants urgent consideration for developing new agricultural practices and effective methods to eradicate the disease. -
