This handbook is for your use to make you and your parents* aware of the rules, policies, and information necessary for a successful year. We urge you and your parents to read this book carefully and keep it handy for reference. Please contact your building principal or superintendent if you have any questions. We value your input and know that by working together, (students, parents, school staff and community), our school district will improve in its quality of education and you will be proud to say, “I am from the Adams County Ohio Valley School District.” Have a good year! EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY The Board of Education and staff believe in the following educational philosophy for the Adams County Ohio Valley School District: MISSION STATEMENT “Our mission is to reach excellence through continuous improvement.” BELIEF STATEMENTS We believe that: All children can learn. The instructional program must be challenging and provide appropriate opportunities for all students. Technology is an integral part of an instructional program. School employees are accountable for the work they do and for the things over which they have control. Our schools must provide a caring, friendly, and safe climate for learning. Our schools are an integral part of and belong to our community. Public education is vital to community development and well being. Our school facilities and equipment must be able to support quality education. High expectations of individual behavior and achievement will encourage each student and district employee to realize his/her potential. Learning brings joy and is a lifetime pursuit for students and employees. * In this handbook any reference to parent or parents is meant to include the court appointed guardian. 1 PARAMETERS The educational needs of our students will be our highest priority. The physical and emotional health, safety, and welfare of our students will not be jeopardized. We will not allow the lack of funds to impede the pursuit of quality education. We will communicate openly, honestly, and in a timely manner to foster trust and understanding. No significant change in operation will be implemented unless mandated by law without student, employee, and community involvement in the planning process. In order to ensure efficient and effective use of resources and maximum educational value, we will not institute or continue programs without cost/benefit analysis.   • Innovation Grant the Ohio Association of Community Colleges Was
    AUGUST 2016 | DR. KEVIN BOYS, PRESIDENT Innovation Grant The Ohio Association of Community Colleges was successful in its application for innovation funds made available through HB 64. This application was on behalf of 18 of the state’s 23 community and technical colleges. The grant will fund the implementation of Ad Astra Platinum Analytics in our colleges to help increase retention and completion, shorten time to degree, and make more efficient use of our schedule. A letter describing this grant is enclosed. America’s Promise Grant Application We are pursuing a grant with Clark State Community College to replicate some short-term certificates in advanced manufacturing, and to support our aviation mechanics program. The four-year federal grant, if funded, will also provide us with some much needed equipment for our renovated engineering space and provide full tuition to students in these select programs. We are appreciative of Clark State’s invitation to partner in this endeavor, as well as the support of several area employers and the Great Oaks Career Campuses. Incentivizing Continual Enrollment (ICE) Research Study We have been invited to participate in an MDRC research study along with three peer Ohio institutions. Benefits to our participation include the potential to increase summer enrollment, an in-depth understanding of our registration process and barriers to enrollment from the student perspective, and financial aid supplements for a significant number of our students to fully cover summer tuition and fees. MDRC has been great to work with. The findings of this study could inform important policy at the college, state, and national levels.
