The Mirid Eccritotarsus Catarinensis Is an Effective Agent Against Water Hyacinth in Some Areas of South Africa
The mirid Eccritotarsus catarinensis is an effective agent against water hyacinth in some areas of South Africa M.P. Hill1 and I.G. Oberholzer2 Summary The sap-sucking mirid Eccritotarsus catarinensis (Carvalho) (Heteroptera: Miridae) was released against water hyacinth in South Africa in late 1996. This insect has a short generation time and popu- lations can rapidly increase. Adults and nymphs feed gregariously on the leaves of water hyacinth, causing severe chlorosis and stunting of the plants. This agent has been released at 22 sites throughout South Africa. The mirid has established at seven of these sites, failed to establish at eight sites, and the remaining seven sites have not been evaluated. Furthermore it has independently dispersed to at least two additional sites. Although the mirid has established at three high-elevation sites (above 1000 m), which are characterized by cold winters with frost, it is most effective against water hyacinth in more subtropical conditions. At a site in a subtropical region of South Africa, near Durban, KwaZulu-Natal Province, the mirid reduced the infestation of water hyacinth on a 10 ha dam from 100% to less than 10% within 18 months. Although populations of the mirid are negatively affected by wind and rain, it is still an effective agent in tropical and subtropical areas, especially when used in conjunction with the other five natural enemy species released on water hyacinth in South Africa. Additive or synergistic effects among introduced and native insect and plant pathogen agents are necessary to achieve biological control of waterhyacinth (Eich- hornia crassipes), a globally damaging aquatic weed. In field plots, plants were infested with waterhyacinth weevils (Neoechetina bruchi and N. eichhorniae) and leaves were scarred by weevil feeding. Subsequent infection by the fungal pathogen Cercospora piaropi caused necrotic lesions to form on leaves. Necrosis development was 7.5- and 10.5-fold greater in plots augmented with both weevils and C. piaropi and weevils alone, respectively, than in plots receiving only C. piaropi. Twenty-four days after weevil infestation, the percentage of laminar area covered by lesions on third-youngest and oldest live leaves was elevated 2.3–2.5-fold in plots augmented with weevils. Scar density and necrosis coverage on young leaf laminae were positively correlated, even though antipathogenic soluble peroxidases were elevated 3-fold in plots augmented with weevils alone or weevils and C. piaropi. Combined weevil and fungal augmentation decreased shoot densities and leaves per plant. In a no-choice bioassay, weevil feeding on oldest but not young leaves was reduced 44% two weeks after C. piaropi inoculation. Protein content and peroxidase activities were elevated 2–6-fold in oldest leaves three weeks after inoculation. -

Abstract Administered by the USDA Forest Service, the Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands occupy 230,000 acres of public land extending from northeastern New Mexico into the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas. A mosaic of topographic features including canyons, plateaus, rolling grasslands and outcrops supports a diverse flora. Eight hundred twenty six (826) species of vascular plant species representing 81 plant families are known to occur on or near these public lands. This report includes a history of the area; ethnobotanical information; an introductory overview of the area including its climate, geology, vegetation, habitats, fauna, and ecological history; and a plant survey and information about the rare, poisonous, and exotic species from the area. A vascular plant checklist of 816 vascular plant taxa in the appendix includes scientific and common names, habitat types, and general distribution data for each species. This list is based on extensive plant collections and available herbarium collections. Authors Donald L. Ecology of aquatic and semi-aquatic Lepidoptera Krzysztof Pabis* Department of Invertebrate Zoology and Hydrobiology, University of Lodz, Banacha 12/16, 90-237 Lodz, Poland Abstract – This paper reviews the current knowledge on the ecology of aquatic and semi-aquatic moths, and discusses possible pre-adaptations of the moths to the aquatic environment. It also highlights major gaps in our understanding of this group of aquatic insects. Aquatic and semi-aquatic moths represent only a tiny fraction of the total lepidopteran diversity. Only about 0.5% of 165,000 known lepidopterans are aquatic; mostly in the preimaginal stages. Truly aquatic species can be found only among the Crambidae, Cosmopterigidae and Erebidae, while semi-aquatic forms associated with amphibious or marsh plants are known in thirteen other families. These lepidopterans have developed various strategies and adaptations that have allowed them to stay under water or in close proximity to water. Problems of respiratory adaptations, locomotor abilities, influence of predators and parasitoids, as well as feeding preferences are discussed. Nevertheless, the poor knowledge on their biology, life cycles, genomics and phylogenetic relationships preclude the generation of fully comprehensive evolutionary scenarios.
