Therefore, the current study was designed and carried out during the past decade. A list of LFPs for 207 butterfly species (Super family Papilionoidea) of Sri Lanka is presented based on local studies and includes 785 plant-butterfly combinations and 480 plant species. Many of these combinations are reported for the first time in Sri Lanka. The impact of introducing new plants on the dynamics of abundance and distribution of butterflies, the possibility of butterflies being pests on crops, and observations of LFPs of rare butterfly species, are discussed. This information is crucial for the conservation management of the butterfly fauna in Sri Lanka. Key words: conservation, crops, larval food plants (LFPs), pests, plant-butterfly combination. The study was conducted during February 2016 to March 2017. The information about medicinal uses of rural people was collected through interview. A total of 124 plant species under 112 genera and 59 families have been documented which were used for the treatment of 114 categories ailments. These medicinal plants were used by the rural people for the treatment of various diseases like diabetes, bronchitis, high blood pressure, asthma, passing of semen, gonorrhea, skin disease, jaundice, headache, diarrhea, cough, cancer, dysentery, scabies, menstrual disorder, fever, toothache, burning wounds, stomachache, piles, gout, rheumatism, abortion, vomiting, ulcer, anemia, ring worm, tuberculosis, arthritis, heart disease, birth control, diuretic, hypertension, paralysis, constipation, baldness, sore, dyspepsia, chicken pox, pain, eczema, cholera, indigestion, tonic, women nervous and general debility, tetanus, liver disorders, sexual disease in male, worms, wound and injury, menstruation, cold, kidney disease, eye inflammation, boils, high cholesterol, urinary tract infections, sunburns, hepatitis, hair fall and others. -

[email protected] ABSTRACT We investigated the vascular plant species composition of homegardens maintained by the Kani tribe of Kanyakumari wildlife sanctuary and encountered 368 plants belonging to 290 genera and 98 families, which included 118 tree species, 71 shrub species, 129 herb species, 45 climber and 5 twiners. The study reveals that these gardens provide medicine, timber, fuelwood and edibles for household consumption as well as for sale. We conclude that these homestead agroforestry system serve as habitat for many economically important plant species, harbour rich biodiversity and mimic the natural forests both in structural composition as well as ecological and economic functions. It was found that the uses of Euphorbiaceous plants by the inhabitants of this region cover a number of broad categories including food, various kinds of poisons, medicines, sundry types of oils, waxes, rubbers, varnishes, compounds for paints and other industrial products. INTRODUCTION Evolution of human life and culture has directly or indirectly been associated with and influenced by the surrounding environment. Primitive people live closely associated with nature and chiefly depend on it for their survival. Their dependence on plants around them made them acquire the knowledge of economic and medicinal properties of many plants by methods of trial and error. Consequently, they became the store-house of knowledge of many useful as well as harmful plants, accumulated and enriched through generations and passed on from one generation to another, without any written documentation. -

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CONSERVATION SCIENCE ISSN: 2067-533X Volume 9, Issue 2, April-June 2018: 319-336 www.ijcs.uaic.ro ASSESSING THE SOCIAL, ECOLOGICAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACT ON CONSERVATION ACTIVITIES WITHIN HUMAN-MODIFIED LANDSCAPES: A CASE STUDY IN JHARGRAM DISTRICT OF WEST BENGAL, INDIA Uday Kumar SEN * Department of Botany and Forestry, Vidyasagar University Midnapore-721 102, West Bengal, India Abstract Sacred groves are tracts of virgin or human- modified forest with rich diversity, which have been protected by the local people for the centuries for their cultural, religious beliefs and taboos that the deities reside in them and protect the villagers from different calamities. The present study was conducted Copraburi (CSG) and Kawa-Sarnd (KSG) sacred grove in Nayagram block of the Jhargram district under west Bengal, in appreciation of its role in biodiversity conservation. The study aimed at the documentation and inventory of sacred groves, its phytodiversity, social, ecological and economical role with mild threats. A total of 120 species belonging to 113 genera distributed 43 families from 24 orders were recorded from the sacred groves according to the APG IV (2016) classification, which covering 47, 26, 23, 24 species of herbs, shrubs, tree, climbers respectively. Moreover, both groves support locally useful medicinal plants for various ailments. This is the first ethnobotanical study in which statistical calculations about plants are done by fidelity level (FL) in the study area. Therefore, there is an urgent need not only to protect the sacred forest, but also to revive and reinvent such traditional way of nature conservation. Abstract This study consolidated our understanding on the weeds of Bhadrak district, Odisha, India based on both bibliographic sources and field studies. A total of 277species of weed taxa belonging to 198 genera and 65 families are reported from the study area. About 95.7% of these weed taxa are distributed across six major superorders; the Lamids and Malvids constitute 43.3% with 60 species each, followed by Commenilids (56 species), Fabids (48 species), Companulids (23 species) and Monocots (18 species). Asteraceae, Poaceae, and Fabaceae are best represented. Forbs are the most represented (50.5%), followed by shrubs (15.2%), climber (11.2%), grasses (10.8%), sedges (6.5%) and legumes (5.8%). Annuals comprised about 57.5% and the remaining are perennials. As per Raunkiaer classification, the therophytes is the most dominant class with 135 plant species (48.7%).The use of weed for different purposes as indicated by local people is also discussed. This study provides a comprehensive and updated checklist of the weed speciesof Bhadrak district which will serve as a tool for conservation of the local biodiversity.
