Electric City Cars New Dawn The Electric City Cars of the Twenty First Century In the second decade of the twenty first century the internal combustion engine powered city cars popularity is on the wain as the popular trend is to purchase ever bigger cars and adverse legislation making them uneconomical to produce. But the gap could be filled by the new breed of electric city cars that manufacturers around the world are producing or developing in increasing numbers. A False Dawn Early Electric Cars This year over twenty two companies are either offering for sale or planning to do so in the near future an electric car. The year is not 2020 but 1900, one hundred and twenty years ago. Today the electric car is becoming fashionable, the cutting edge of technology, but the electric car is nothing new and a hundred years ago it had passed its first flush of popularity and was to decline into relative obscurity for the next ninety years. At the beginning of the last century fleets of battery electric taxis where running in Berlin,Paris, London and New York. In Berlin the authorities operate a small fleet of battery electric fire engines and ambulances and the post office a large fleet of battery electric postal delivery vans. Another surprising fact is that by nineteen sixteen over twenty seven thousand battery electric truck where in use in the USA. It seemed to be the beginning of a new age. Electric cars where easy to drive, very similar to cars today that are fitted with an automatic gearbox and of course electric starters, that by the way we're first used in an hybrid car early in the last century.

  • The Long Tail Thesis: Conceptualizing China's Entrepreneurial Practices
Author Accepted Manuscript Version of Record published in Chinese Management Studies, Vol. ahead-of-print No. ahead-of-print. https://doi.org/10.1108/CMS-03-2019-0109 Copyright © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited The Long Tail Thesis: Conceptualizing China’s Entrepreneurial Practices in Fintech and Electric Vehicles Shuanping Dai, Markus Taube Mercator School of Management, and Institute of East Asian Studies, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany Corresponding to Shuanping Dai [email protected] Abstract Purpose- This paper explores the functionality of long tail markets (LTM), where the consumers cannot be reached or are ignored by the traditional mainstream businesses, in new products and business development. Design/methodology/approach – First, we review two Chinese entrepreneurial practices in the Fintech sector and low-speed electric vehicles (LSEV), and describe their stylized facts; second, we explore a possible theoretical LTM framework to underscore these practices; third, we make a connection between LTM and existing business models, and analyze its significance and practical implications in business, in particular, in developing economies. Findings – The LTM business approach has helped Chinese companies in the Fintech sector and LSEVs gain global attention. The success factors of LTM for businesses are identifying a specific customer base, being aware of localization products, and playing skilfully with regulations; the LTM approach has several overlaps with existing studies on niche products and BOP market. Originality/value – Based on some emerging and attractive business practices in China, this paper offers a valuable attempt to theorize them as long tail phenomenon. The LTM thesis provides a potential framework to reference for similar methods elsewhere and may illuminate entrepreneurship to be explored in similar markets.

1 Edition 02 / 2019 Foreign Trade Dear Readers, The economic data in Q1/2019 looks better than expected. It did not deteriorate compared to Q4/2018 and March showed a much better momentum compared to the first two month of the year. Especially the infrastructure construction has contributed to the growth. The overall data in Q1 2019 are as following: • GDP in Q1: 21.344 trillion RMB, up 6.4% • Industrial output: up 6.5% (in Q4/2018: 5.7%) • Fixed-asset investment in Q1/2019: up 6.3% • China’s Foreign Trade in Q1/2019: 7.01 trillion RMB, up 3.7% • Exports: 3.77 trillion RMB, up 6.7% • Imports: 3.24 trillion RMB, up 0.3% • Balance of Trade: 529.7 billion RMB, widened 75.2% • CPI: rose by 1.8% The VDMA China Business Climate Survey (BCS) - Spring 2019 was conducted between March 18 and April 15. The result evaluation will be circulated soon among the companies that participated. That much can already be said: 77% of all participants assessed their current business situation as either good or satisfactory. However, 23% consider the situation as bad which is an increase of 16% compared to the last survey in autumn 2018, where just 7% evaluated their situation as bad. Best rating came from the sub-sectors Construction and Mining Equipment and Food Processing & Packaging Machinery. Spring was a rather eventful time, with the Two Sessions Meeting and the 2nd Belt & Road Forum (BRF) happening in Beijing. During the BRF (April 25-27), national governments, local authorities and enterprises reached a series of cooperation agreements, the results being categorized in 6 groups and 286.
