The Old Dairy Veterinary Centre Motor Neurone Disease Association Patron HRH the Princess Anne South Molton Group Motor Neurone Disease is a fatal and progressive disease which affects the motor neurones. These are the nerves which connect the brain and spinal cord to the body’s muscles. As the nerve cells begin to die, the muscles weaken and begin to waste away, robbing people of the ability to do everyday things such as walking, talking and swallowing. The disease does not affect touch, sight or other senses and rarely affects the mind. MND is not a rare condition, nor is it new. It was characterised over 130 years ago. It carries a life expectancy from the outset of two to five years. Despite worldwide research no cure has yet been found and little is known about the cause. We are a small group of supporters who meet once a month to raise funds and awareness. We can help with providing funds towards much needed holidays or house alterations. Often So- cial Services cannot respond quickly enough to a request for help. Time is of the essence with MND. We are always looking for new members. Formerly called Simonsbath Lodge, the oldest dwelling in the Royal Forest, it is a special place for the Society as it was founded here. The lunch gathering, full to capacity, was a jolly occasion and included a dramatic piece by two actors reminiscing on the momentous events of 1958 leading up to the registration of The Exmoor Society officially on 28 November. It was recognised locally and nationally that an independent body was needed, not constricted by being a public body, to act as a watchdog and encourage activities beneficial to Exmoor. After a fine speech by Society member Steven Pugsley, an Exmoor National Park Authority member and West Somerset District Councillor, the President, Sir Antony Acland, raised a toast to the next 60 years.

To enable Exmoor’s communities and partnerships to plan development in their neighbourhoods to help meet their needs and aspirations while conserving the special qualities of the National Park. Partnership Plan Priority C1: Support community led initiatives that help to meet local needs. 10.1. This section of the Local Plan sets out information that applies to defined settlements within the National Park (GP3 Spatial Strategy). For each settlement there is an inset map430 to the Policies Map and written statement. The written statement outlines the key aspects of each settlement in relation to its setting, built environment and local services. Where they have been prepared, parish and other community-led plans have also been taken into account. 10.2. The inset maps associated with each settlement identify particular areas or features that are important for social or environmental reasons, which are needed to interpret and apply Local Plan policies at a settlement level including areas at risk of flooding, wildlife designations, Conservation Areas, and in some cases land safeguarded for community services or facilities.     The Exmoor Society Quiz No 9 - The Answers 1. Caratacus Stone, Winsford Hill (© Ethan Doyle White) The Caratacus Stone is thought to date from the 6th century and is generally believed to be a memorial to a person who claimed the first-century British chieftain Caratacus as an ancestor, as the inscription can be translated as "grandson or immediate descendant of Caratacus”. In 1906 a shelter was erected over the stone, and an excavation in 1937 revealed that the stone was not associated with a burial site. The stone can be found just off the main road (B3223) that crosses Winsford Hill, near the cross-roads called Spire Cross with side roads going to Winsford and Tarr Steps 2. Fortescue Memorial, Simonsbath Sir John William Fortescue was born in 1859, the son of the third Earl Fortescue. His family owned the area around Simonsbath for much of the 20th century and he often stayed at Simonsbath Lodge (now Simonsbath House Hotel). He was librarian at Windsor Castle 1905-26 and was best known for his 16 volume 'History of the British Army'. He was a keen walker and naturalist and also wrote local books, including 'The Story of a Red Deer'. He died in 1933 and his ashes were scattered at Five Barrows. On the suggestion of his widow, Winifred, his family built the cairn above Drybridge Combe on the Simonsbath to South Molton road, land now owned by Exmoor National Park Authority, who restored it in 2001. 3. Local food and drink is avail- able on site….and the very special local ice-cream. The setting is truly breath-taking, looking north over the Exe Valley toward Dunkery and south to Molland Common via Withypool Hill. Rather aptly, the show shares the field with an ancient burial mound, Herne’s Barrow. According to ancient myth, Herne the Hunter was a ghostly apparition who appeared sporting a set of stag’s horns growing from his head and rattling chains….….. We are not sure whether this barrow belongs to the same Herne or whether we would want it to! All are welcome. If you love Exmoor and its people, even if you do not share their love of horses or livestock, the show is still worth a visit…. why else would it have been going for over a century! We are very grateful to the Branton and Jowell families for allowing us to use their land for the show.
