Motor Neurone Disease Association Patron HRH the Princess Anne South Molton Group Motor Neurone Disease is a fatal and progressive disease which affects the motor neurones. These are the nerves which connect the brain and spinal cord to the body’s muscles. As the nerve cells begin to die, the muscles weaken and begin to waste away, robbing people of the ability to do everyday things such as walking, talking and swallowing. The disease does not affect touch, sight or other senses and rarely affects the mind. MND is not a rare condition, nor is it new. It was characterised over 130 years ago. It carries a life expectancy from the outset of two to five years. Despite worldwide research no cure has yet been found and little is known about the cause. We are a small group of supporters who meet once a month to raise funds and awareness. We can help with providing funds towards much needed holidays or house alterations. Often So- cial Services cannot respond quickly enough to a request for help. Time is of the essence with MND. We are always looking for new members. The Motor Neurone Disease Association has many helpful leaflets and also a website: www.mndassociation.org should you wish to know more.
