August 2021 News Letter DEVON AND SOMERSET STAGHOUNDS and THE EXMOOR PONY SOCIETY Showground, Court Hill, Exford £15/car on the gate from 8am Exmoor Ponies, Horses and Sheep on Show, Craft, Produce and Local Trade Stands Falconry Display, Family Dog Show, Stag Horns, Inter-Hunt Relay, Pony Club Show Jumping Gymkhana, Parade of Hounds Enquiries: [email protected] www.exfordshow.com Exmoor is a special place to many and the Show seeks to celebrate this. Local food and drink is avail- able on site….and the very special local ice-cream. The setting is truly breath-taking, looking north over the Exe Valley toward Dunkery and south to Molland Common via Withypool Hill. Rather aptly, the show shares the field with an ancient burial mound, Herne’s Barrow. According to ancient myth, Herne the Hunter was a ghostly apparition who appeared sporting a set of stag’s horns growing from his head and rattling chains….….. We are not sure whether this barrow belongs to the same Herne or whether we would want it to! All are welcome. If you love Exmoor and its people, even if you do not share their love of horses or livestock, the show is still worth a visit…. why else would it have been going for over a century! We are very grateful to the Branton and Jowell families for allowing us to use their land for the show. • South Molton Mechanics Institute
South Molton Mechanics Institute Mechanics’ Institutes were self-improvement organisations. Originally they were primarily intended to spread knowledge and learning amongst the newly emerging artisan classes created by the Industrial Revolution. They were local, independent organisations but generally based on the same principle, usually containing a library, reading room, lecture room and sometimes a small museum. The oldest Mechanics’ Institute in England was established in Holborn, London in 1823 and by 1850 there were about 700 in the UK. During the 1860s the number of Institutes gradually dwindled with those that did survive becoming almost exclusively the preserve of the middle and professional classes. Extracted from various web sites The Mechanics Institute at South Molton was established comparatively late on 1st January 1856. At this time South Molton had a population of approximately 4,500 with less than 1000 households. Only 150 residents had the vote. The Pannier Market had not yet been built but there was a Market House (later converted to a Post Office), plus stalls erected on Broad Street on market days. The Market House had been built on pillars and arches with rooms above which were used for meetings etc. There were two woollen mills which were doing well due to supplying blankets to the army during the Crimean war. The mills employed between 200-300 men and women plus about 80 boys and girls. The children received a few hours schooling a day. There were also several wool staplers and wool dealers in the town. There were two tanneries and the usual mix of artisans.

Motor Neurone Disease Association Patron HRH the Princess Anne South Molton Group Motor Neurone Disease is a fatal and progressive disease which affects the motor neurones. These are the nerves which connect the brain and spinal cord to the body’s muscles. As the nerve cells begin to die, the muscles weaken and begin to waste away, robbing people of the ability to do everyday things such as walking, talking and swallowing. The disease does not affect touch, sight or other senses and rarely affects the mind. MND is not a rare condition, nor is it new. It was characterised over 130 years ago. It carries a life expectancy from the outset of two to five years. Despite worldwide research no cure has yet been found and little is known about the cause. We are a small group of supporters who meet once a month to raise funds and awareness. We can help with providing funds towards much needed holidays or house alterations. Often So- cial Services cannot respond quickly enough to a request for help. Time is of the essence with MND. We are always looking for new members. Formerly called Simonsbath Lodge, the oldest dwelling in the Royal Forest, it is a special place for the Society as it was founded here. The lunch gathering, full to capacity, was a jolly occasion and included a dramatic piece by two actors reminiscing on the momentous events of 1958 leading up to the registration of The Exmoor Society officially on 28 November. It was recognised locally and nationally that an independent body was needed, not constricted by being a public body, to act as a watchdog and encourage activities beneficial to Exmoor. After a fine speech by Society member Steven Pugsley, an Exmoor National Park Authority member and West Somerset District Councillor, the President, Sir Antony Acland, raised a toast to the next 60 years.
