Motor Neurone Disease Association Patron HRH the Princess Anne South Molton Group Motor Neurone Disease is a fatal and progressive disease which affects the motor neurones. These are the nerves which connect the brain and spinal cord to the body’s muscles. As the nerve cells begin to die, the muscles weaken and begin to waste away, robbing people of the ability to do everyday things such as walking, talking and swallowing. The disease does not affect touch, sight or other senses and rarely affects the mind. MND is not a rare condition, nor is it new. It was characterised over 130 years ago. It carries a life expectancy from the outset of two to five years. Despite worldwide research no cure has yet been found and little is known about the cause. We are a small group of supporters who meet once a month to raise funds and awareness. We can help with providing funds towards much needed holidays or house alterations. Often So- cial Services cannot respond quickly enough to a request for help. Time is of the essence with MND. We are always looking for new members. A sixth volume of Somerset Marriage Registers is now completed, making the total number of parishes dealt with to be forty-nine. JL37^9^39 As before, contractions have been made use of w.—widower or widow. dioc.—in the diocese of. b.—bachelor co.—in the county of. s. —spinster, single woman. lie. —marriage licence, d. —daughter. y.—yeoman, p.—of the parish of. c.—carpenter. The reader must remember that the printed volumes are not " evidence " in the legal sense. Certificates must be obtained from the local clergy in charge of the Registers. The Editors have to acknowledge the ready willingness of the Clergy in affording facilities for making the needful transcripts for the printers. Their names are given under the respective parishes. They will gladly welcome the assistance of others who may be willing to aid in transcribing Registers, for it is only by volunteer work that it is possible to print our Parish Registers. They would gladly issue two volumes in each year, and this they can do if those who have the opportunity will supply them with the needful transcriptions of the Registers.

Formerly called Simonsbath Lodge, the oldest dwelling in the Royal Forest, it is a special place for the Society as it was founded here. The lunch gathering, full to capacity, was a jolly occasion and included a dramatic piece by two actors reminiscing on the momentous events of 1958 leading up to the registration of The Exmoor Society officially on 28 November. It was recognised locally and nationally that an independent body was needed, not constricted by being a public body, to act as a watchdog and encourage activities beneficial to Exmoor. After a fine speech by Society member Steven Pugsley, an Exmoor National Park Authority member and West Somerset District Councillor, the President, Sir Antony Acland, raised a toast to the next 60 years.
