His greatest distinction, however, lies in the tremen- dous apostolic, pastoral, and literary work that he accomplished dur- ing the forty-eight years of his priestly ministry. Known as the “Father of Serbian Orthodoxy in America,” 2 he was responsible for the found- ing of the first Serbian churches in the New World. He was an Orthodox apostle of universal significance. Describing the vast scope of Fr. History St. Nicholas of Japan (baptized as Ivan Dmitrievich Kasatkin) brought Eastern Orthodoxy to Japan in the 19th century.[1] In 1861 he was sent by the Russian Orthodox Church to Hakodate, Hokkaidō as a priest to a chapel of the Russian Consulate.[2]. Though the contemporary Shogun's government prohibited the Japanese conversion to Christianity, soon some neighbors who frequently visited the chapel converted in 1864[3]—Nikolai's first three converts in Japan. While they were his first converts in Japan, they were not the first Japanese to do so—some Japanese who had settled in Russia had converted to Orthodoxy. Apart from brief trips, Nicholas stayed in Japan, even during the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905), and spread Eastern Orthodoxy nationwide, being appointed as the first bishop of Japanese Orthodox Church. He moved his headquarter from Hakodate to Tokyo around 1863. In 1886 the Japanese Orthodox Church had over 10,000 baptized faithful[4]. In 1891 Nicholas founded the Cathedral of Tokyo in Kanda district and spent the majority of the last half of his life there, hence Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral was nicknamed Nikorai-do by Kanda citizens.

    THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH Department for External Church Relations Thanksgiving to St Nicholas of Japan celebrated in Kyoto to mark 40th anniversary of his canonization [gallery end=2] On October 11, 2010, a solemn thanksgiving to St Nicholas of Japan, Equal-to-the-Apostles, was held at the Church of the Annunciation in Kyoto, Japan. It was led by Metropolitan Daniel of All Japan. [gallery start=3] Among the worshippers was an official delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church, who came to Japan with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia for the celebrations devoted to the 40th anniversary of St Nicholas’s canonization and the 40th of the autonomy of the Japanese Orthodox Church. The delegation is led by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relations. It includes Archbishop Feognost of Sergiev Posav, Archpriest Nikolay Balashov, DECR vice-chairman, and others. Taking part in the common prayer were also Bishop Seraphim of Sendai and Archpriest Ioann Nagaya of the Russian Orthodox Church Representation in Tokyo. The Cathedral of the Annunciation was built during St Nicholas’s lifetime. It is the only church in Japan to preserve an altar consecrated by the saint himself. To this day, there is the Holy Gospel lying on the altar, which was given to the parish by St John of Kronstadt and inscribed by St. Nicholas. After the service, the Primate of the Japanese Orthodox Church greeted the high delegation. He reminded the congregation that 11 years ago, the late Patriarch Alexy II, during his visit to Japan, visited Kyoto and celebrated a thanksgiving at the Church of the Annunciation, which has been the center of the Western Diocese of the Japanese Orthodox Church for many years.

    Lesson 18 Saint icholas of Japan, Equal-to-the-Apostles (February 3/16) ( 1912) Saint Nicholas of Japan was born Ivan Kasatkin in 1836 in Smolensk province. His father was a deacon. Ivan’s mother died when he was only five. The family was very poor, and Ivan suffered much deprivation in his childhood. He was talented and hard- working, and graduated with honours from the Seminary in Saint Petersburg. In 1860 Ivan Kasatkin was given the name Nicholas, and he went to Japan as a missionary. The first years in Japan were especially difficult for St. Nicholas. He did not speak Japanese. People were hostile towards him because he was a foreigner and a Christian. With hard work and God’s help, the hierarch learned Japanese and translated many church service books. He also learned to speak English, which was becoming an international language at that time. Saint Nicholas studied the history of Japan and knew it better than many Japanese. The first person to convert to Christianity was a Shinto priest, Sawabe. Sawabe one day came to the Russian priest to express his hate towards Christians. Father Nicholas spoke to him kindly and told him about the Christian faith. Sawabe became interested and came the next day to hear more. Later, he brought a friend with him, then another friend. All three wanted to receive instructions in the teachings of Christ. In a few years, they were baptized. Sawabe was given the name John and ordained as an Orthodox priest. By 1868, the congregation of Father Nicholas numbered 20 people.
