Archimandrite Sebastian Dabovich SERBIAN ORTHODOX APOSTLE TO AMERICA by Hieromonk Damascene . A A U S during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, Archimandrite B Sebastian Dabovich has the distinction of being the first person born in the United States of America to be ordained as an Orthodox priest, 1 and also the first native-born American to be tonsured as an Orthodox monk. His greatest distinction, however, lies in the tremen- dous apostolic, pastoral, and literary work that he accomplished dur- ing the forty-eight years of his priestly ministry. Known as the “Father of Serbian Orthodoxy in America,” 2 he was responsible for the found- ing of the first Serbian churches in the New World. This, however, was only one part of his life’s work, for he tirelessly and zealously sought to spread the Orthodox Faith to all peoples, wherever he was called. He was an Orthodox apostle of universal significance. Describing the vast scope of Fr. Sebastian’s missionary activity, Bishop Irinej (Dobrijevic) of Australia and New Zealand has written: 1 Alaskan-born priests were ordained before Fr. Sebastian, but this was when Alaska was still part of Russia. 2 Mirko Dobrijevic (later Irinej, Bishop of Australia and New Zealand), “The First American Serbian Apostle—Archimandrite Sebastian Dabovich,” Again, vol. 16, no. 4 (December 1993), pp. 13–14. Abstract Enemies of the Lineage: Widows and Customary Rights in Colonial Korea, 1910-1945 by Sungyun Lim Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Andrew E. Barshay, Chair My dissertation examines Korean widows and their legal rights during the Japanese colonial rule (1910-1945), focusing on widows and their lawsuits over property rights, inheritance and adoption. Utilizing civil case records from the Superior Court of Colonial Korea (Ch!sen K!t! H!in), I argue that women’s rights were diminished by the Korean customs adopted by the judicial system under the Japanese colonial state. By examining the production process of Korean customs in the colonial civil courts, I emphasize Korean agency in the transformation of family customs during the Japanese colonial period. Women’s property and inheritance rights developed in close relationship with the Japanese family policy, which aimed to disintegrate the lineages in Korea into nuclear households. The Japanese colonial state strengthened the household system by protecting customary rights that allowed widows to become house-heads.

Japanese Orthodox Church Japanese Orthodox Church 日本ハリストス正教会 Holy Resurrection Cathedral in Tokyo Jurisdiction Russian Orthodox Church Autonomous church of Eastern Orthodoxy under the omophorion of the Russian Diocese type Orthodox Church. Founded July 2, 1861 by St. Nicholas of Japan Current Bishop Metropolitan Daniel (Nushiro) of All Japan and Archbishop of Tokyo. See Tokyo Headquarters Tokyo, Japan Territory Japan Language Japanese Population 30,000 estimated Website http://www.orthodoxjapan.jp/ The Japanese Orthodox Church (日本ハリストス正教会) is an autonomous church of Eastern Orthodoxy under the omophorion of the Russian Orthodox Church. History St. Nicholas of Japan (baptized as Ivan Dmitrievich Kasatkin) brought Eastern Orthodoxy to Japan in the 19th century.[1] In 1861 he was sent by the Russian Orthodox Church to Hakodate, Hokkaidō as a priest to a chapel of the Russian Consulate.[2]. Though the contemporary Shogun's government prohibited the Japanese conversion to Christianity, soon some neighbors who frequently visited the chapel converted in 1864[3]—Nikolai's first three converts in Japan. While they were his first converts in Japan, they were not the first Japanese to do so—some Japanese who had settled in Russia had converted to Orthodoxy. Apart from brief trips, Nicholas stayed in Japan, even during the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905), and spread Eastern Orthodoxy nationwide, being appointed as the first bishop of Japanese Orthodox Church. He moved his headquarter from Hakodate to Tokyo around 1863. In 1886 the Japanese Orthodox Church had over 10,000 baptized faithful[4]. In 1891 Nicholas founded the Cathedral of Tokyo in Kanda district and spent the majority of the last half of his life there, hence Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral was nicknamed Nikorai-do by Kanda citizens.

THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH Department for External Church Relations Thanksgiving to St Nicholas of Japan celebrated in Kyoto to mark 40th anniversary of his canonization [gallery end=2] On October 11, 2010, a solemn thanksgiving to St Nicholas of Japan, Equal-to-the-Apostles, was held at the Church of the Annunciation in Kyoto, Japan. It was led by Metropolitan Daniel of All Japan. [gallery start=3] Among the worshippers was an official delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church, who came to Japan with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia for the celebrations devoted to the 40th anniversary of St Nicholas’s canonization and the 40th of the autonomy of the Japanese Orthodox Church. The delegation is led by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relations. It includes Archbishop Feognost of Sergiev Posav, Archpriest Nikolay Balashov, DECR vice-chairman, and others. Taking part in the common prayer were also Bishop Seraphim of Sendai and Archpriest Ioann Nagaya of the Russian Orthodox Church Representation in Tokyo. The Cathedral of the Annunciation was built during St Nicholas’s lifetime. It is the only church in Japan to preserve an altar consecrated by the saint himself. To this day, there is the Holy Gospel lying on the altar, which was given to the parish by St John of Kronstadt and inscribed by St. Nicholas. After the service, the Primate of the Japanese Orthodox Church greeted the high delegation. He reminded the congregation that 11 years ago, the late Patriarch Alexy II, during his visit to Japan, visited Kyoto and celebrated a thanksgiving at the Church of the Annunciation, which has been the center of the Western Diocese of the Japanese Orthodox Church for many years.

"The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field." Matthew 9:37- 38 In this verse from the bible we hear Christ telling his disciples about a harvest. You probably already know that the harvest is what a farmer is able to pick and use from his farm. If your family grows a garden, you probably harvest or pick the fruits and vegetables from it to eat. You might even share them with family and friends. Below, list some things you might need to have or use in order to harvest a good crop from your garden. In the verse we read, Christ isn’t talking about finding the fruits and vegetables that are ready to be harvested. He’s talking about finding the people who are ready to learn about Christ and participate in the church.

FAMILY LAW AS A REPOSITORY OF VOLKSGEIST: THE GERMANY-JAPAN GENEALOGY YUN-RU CHEN INTRODUCTION This article is based on the introductory chapter of my dissertation, titled The Emergence of Family Law in Colonial Taiwan: A Genealogical Perspective.1 The dissertation itself is a theoretical and empirical analysis of the way in which Family Law was (re-) constructed as a distinctive and separate legal sphere in colonial Taiwan (1895-1945), a former province of a declining Chinese Qing dynasty and the first colony of an expanding Japanese empire. The idea that the distinctiveness of family law is neither natural nor inherent but is rather a social construction has been an important theme. 2 Recently, Janet Halley and Kerry Rittch propose a theory named “family law exceptionalism” (FLE). The FLE tries to demonstrate the infinite ways in which family and family law are deemed special and exceptional, as opposed to market and market law, which are deemed general and common. Market law and family Law are polarized and, at the same time, mutually constitutive.3 My dissertation is a sequent development of the abovementioned theme. A main proposition which I develop in the dissertation is that the development in colonial Taiwan occurred among a sequence of similar formative process in which universalist and modern market law was devised for the economic development of the nation, while family law was reserved for collective identity. The dissertation hence offers a genealogy of the idea of unique family law, 1 Chen Yun-Ru, The Emergence of Family Law in Colonial Taiwan (1895-1945): A Genealogical Perspective (2013) (unpublished S.J.D.

ARTICLES THE INDIGENIZATION OF CONSTITUTIONALISM IN THE JAPANESE EXPERIENCE ChristopherA. Ford* SINCE ITS OPENING TO THE WORLD in the middle decades of the 19th century, Japan has distinguished itself by its receptivity to foreign legal ideas, adopting from European models not only the very concept of a written constitution but also an elaborate system of cabinet governance, an extensive regime of codified general law, and (more recently) a scheme of constitutional rights and judicial review modeled on the United States Constitution and American judicial precedents. This essay seeks to explore Japan's process of legal adoption and adaptation, with particular emphasis upon how the American-inspired scheme of court-policed constitutional liberties has grown and developed in the soil of its new home. Japan's adoption of foreign legal models - and especially of foreign approaches to constitutional jurisprudence - has displayed characteristic patterns of alteration and adaptation.
