  • New Orleans Love Songs
New Orleans Love Songs As Valentine’s Day approaches, it is an appropriate time to take stock of the love songs recorded by New Orleans artists, as well as other tunes romantically connected with this great metropolis. In no particular order, here are just a few of the Crescent City’s great love songs. NECCO style Valentine candy hearts by Lakeview couple Cherie Melancon Franz and her husband Arthur – photo by Thinkerella Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans One of the great love songs to New Orleans, Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans, was written by two Yankees. The song’s lyricist, Eddie DeLange, was from Long Island, New York, and composer Louis Alter was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts. “Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans And miss it each night and day? I know I’m not wrong, the feeling’s getting stronger The longer I stay away. Miss the moss-covered vines, the tall sugar pines, Where mockingbirds used to sing. And I’d like to see the lazy Mississippi A-hurryin’ into Spring. Oh, the Mardi Gras, the memories Of Creole tunes that fill the air. I dream of oleanders in June, And soon I’m wishin’ that I were there. Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans When that’s where you left your heart? And there’s something more: I miss the one I care for More than I miss New Orleans.” Louis Armstrong truly owned the song (he and Billie Holiday introduced it in the 1947 film New Orleans), but some of the lyrics (albeit evocative and beautiful) just don’t make any sense.

  • Iii E. the Jazz Component: the Fantasy Collection
III E. THE JAZZ COMPONENT: THE FANTASY COLLECTION III E1. The LPs For many serious researchers into the changes and developments in jazz during the late 1940s and the early 1950s it is the LP albums which are part of the collection that will be of major interest. In particular Bill Belmont, as he assembled the Fantasy collection for the Archives, was able to locate a selection of the earliest 10” Prestige LPs which had been almost forgotten in the Fantasy warehouse. It should be emphasised, however, that these are not the original Prestige releases, which now sell for thousands of dollars on the collector’s market. To satisfy a small core of serious jazz enthusiasts, most of them in Japan, Fantasy manufactured facsimiles of many of the most important LPs in their catalog. Although the new albums are imprinted with an inconspicuous notice “Manufactured from master owned by Fantasy, Inc.” they are in every other respect identical with the originals. They are an invaluable time capsule of this crucial period of jazz’s development - and in their often primitive albums covers and minimal presentation they suggest the marginal nature of jazz as this period began. Also, in their LP format the modern listener has an insight into the programming concepts that led to the presentation of the material on the LP’s two sides. THE PRESTIGE 10”ALBUMS These have been reproduced with the original one color covers and - in the beginning - simply catalog listings on the back of the cover. The album notes, generally by Ira Gitler, begin after the first few examples.

The Great R&B Files (# 7 of 12) Updated July 11, 2019 Ten Sepia Super Stars of Rock ‘n’ Roll Idols Making Music History Presented by Claus Röhnisch The R&B Pioneers Series - Volume Seven of twelve page 1 (90) Ten Sepia Super Stars of Rock ’n’ Roll 2 The Blues Pioneers Series – Volume Seven of twelve Ten Sepia Super Stars of Rock ’n’ Roll Introduction Let us start with the fact that the presentations herein are narrowed to Black Performers. Let’s also agree on a simple definition of the original rock ‘n’ roll era: “American Popular Music circa 1954-1959, pre-dominantly aimed at the new-found teenage market”. Historians today go back to around 1947, but the general American population – including the blacks – did not “recognize” it as a musical art until much later. Fox-Trot (or foxtrot) was the way of dancing to big bands’ popular music after 1914. During the 1930s and 1940s swing by the Big Bands was the thing. The term “Rock ‘n’ Roll” was originally – and for several decades later - used as quite something else than dancing. Musically, the term was first found in Trixie Smith’s blues recording “My Man Rocks Me (With A Steady Roll)” in 1922. The phrase was sporadically in use through the 1930s, and more frequently in the ‘40s (as a term for danceable music and “have-fun” after the successes of swing music, especially expressed in lindy-hop, boogie-woogie (with the original Pinetop boogie of 1928), jive, and jitterbug). It was by many understood as just a new-found name for the black Rhythm & Blues music crossing over to white teenage America in the early 1950s.
