Car Wars 2020-2023 the Rise (And Fall) of the Crossover?
The US Automotive Product Pipeline Car Wars 2020-2023 The Rise (and Fall) of the Crossover? Equity | 10 May 2019 Car Wars thesis and investment relevance Car Wars is an annual proprietary study that assesses the relative strength of each automaker’s product pipeline in the US. The purpose is to quantify industry product trends, and then relate our findings to investment decisions. Our thesis is fairly straightforward: we believe replacement rate drives showroom age, which drives market United States Autos/Car Manufacturers share, which drives profits and stock prices. OEMs with the highest replacement rate and youngest showroom age have generally gained share from model years 2004-19. John Murphy, CFA Research Analyst Ten key findings of our study MLPF&S +1 646 855 2025 1. Product activity remains reasonably robust across the industry, but the ramp into a [email protected] softening market will likely drive overcrowding and profit pressure. Aileen Smith Research Analyst 2. New vehicle introductions are 70% CUVs and Light Trucks, and just 24% Small and MLPF&S Mid/Large Cars. The material CUV overweight (45%) will likely pressure the +1 646 743 2007 [email protected] segment’s profitability to the low of passenger cars, and/or will leave dealers with a Yarden Amsalem dearth of entry level product to offer, further increasing an emphasis on used cars. Research Analyst MLPF&S 3. Product cadence overall continues to converge, making the market increasingly [email protected] competitive, which should drive incremental profit pressure across the value chain. User Friendliness of Safety Features Has Large Impact on Quality and Reliability Ratings of New Vehicles, J.D
User Friendliness of Safety Features Has Large Impact on Quality and Reliability Ratings of New Vehicles, J.D. Power Finds Daihatsu is Highest Ranked Brand Overall for Second Consecutive Year TOKYO: 21 Aug. 2019 — Making new safety features more user-friendly effects overall initial quality, as consumers indicate they are more interested than ever in purchasing vehicles with such features, according to the J.D. Power 2019 Japan Initial Quality StudySM (IQS), released today. “As additional safety features and new technologies are increasingly offered on new vehicles, consumers’ expectations and interest in them increases,” said Atsushi Kawahashi, Senior Director of the Automotive Division at J.D. Power. “Owner ratings on vehicle quality and reliability increases when new vehicles are equipped with such features and technologies. However, when owners have a problem with usability, ratings considerably decrease and may affect repurchase intentions of the brand. Improving user friendliness will not only increase owners’ satisfaction but will also reinforce their trust in such safety features and new technologies, ultimately improving their perceptions of their new vehicle.” Following are some of the key findings of the 2019 study: Overall initial quality in 2019 is on par with 2018, while some brands have fewer problems than in the past. • Initial quality in 2019 remains flat compared with 2018: New-vehicle quality in 2019 averages 66 PP100 (problems per 100 vehicles), one problem fewer than 67 PP100 in 2018. A lower PP100 indicates higher initial vehicle quality performance. There are no significant changes year over year in PP100 for individual problem areas measured in the study. -
Plug-In Hybrid and Electric Vehicles Increasingly Appeal to New-Vehicle Owners, J.D
Plug-in Hybrid and Electric Vehicles Increasingly Appeal to New-Vehicle Owners, J.D. Power Finds Overall Vehicle Appeal Remains the Same Level as in 2017, While Satisfaction with Fuel Economy Decreases TOKYO: 20 Sept. 2018 — While overall new-vehicle appeal in Japan remains the same as in 2017, according to the J.D. Power 2018 Japan Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) StudySM released today, APEAL scores for motor-driven vehicles such as plug-in hybrids and electrical vehicles have increased, compared to scores for fuel-powered vehicles. The study finds that “electric powertrain vehicles1” have a greater appeal for new-vehicle owners than do “internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles” such as gasoline or diesel-fueled vehicles and hybrids. The overall APEAL score averages 676 points for electric powertrain vehicles, while the score averages 636 points for ICE vehicles, representing a 40-point gap in score between vehicle types. Additionally, electric powertrain vehicles outperform ICE vehicles in engine/ transmission (a 107-point gap); fuel economy (an 85-point gap); and driving dynamics (a 44-point gap), which are typical advantages for electric powertrain vehicles. Those who owned a hybrid but purchased a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle as a replacement are less satisfied with fuel economy than are owners of gasoline- or diesel-fueled vehicles, a 42-point gap in score. The study also finds that the proportion of those who owned a hybrid when they purchased a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle as a replacement to the household has increased to 10% in 2018 from 6% last year. -
