In writing this thesis, I hope that I have, in some way, managed to explain the reasons for this cultural diversity. This thesis would not have been written without the assistance of my two supervisors, Professor Mike Cronin and Professor Matthew Taylor. Professor Cronin’s assistance and knowledge has transformed the way I think about history, society and sport while Professor Taylor’s expertise has also made me look at the writing of sports history and the development of society in a different way.

The site is an irregularly shaped area of ground including a low cliff and land above it located to the rear, (i.e landward side) of the Harbour Compound at Killybegs. Most of the site is high relative to the Harbour Compound, at the north western end it tapers down to a level similar to the Harbour Compound. The site extends in a narrow strip to the south east to provide for a surface water pipe. 1.2. The harbour at Killybegs is owned and managed by the Harbour Authority under the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and has a secure compound at this location, with access from the western end via a security checkpoint, to what is largely a flat, surfaced area split by a roadway with a long quay on the seaward side and a low vegetated cliff on the landward side.

Genealogy makes history come alive because when people learn about their ancestors, they are able to make connections to historical events. Family History is the biographical research into your ancestors. The aim is typically to produce a well-documented narrative history, of interest to family members and perhaps future generations. It involves putting flesh on the skeleton of what is produced by genealogy and involves the study of the historical circumstances and geographical situation in which ancestors lived. As custodians of the collective memory of County Donegal, genealogy/ family history resources are an important Culture Division service. This booklet was produced by the Library, Archives and Museum Services of the Culture Division, Donegal County Council to provide a brief introduction to resources available within these services and to other resources and agencies that can help to guide researchers in tracing their Donegal family tree. This booklet is a pocket guide to some of the interesting and historic places in the town of Killybegs. When you have had a look at these local landmarks, remember you’re only getting started. The town was famously the last port of call for the “Girona”, the most ill-fated ship of the Spanish Armada in 1588. These locations include the registered national monument which incorporates St Catherine’s Church and graveyard, St Catherine’s Well and the ruin of Kit’s Castle. A short distance away is St John’s Church of Ireland, a beautiful building in its own right and a fascinating visit to see the graveyard where there are several WWI burials. Overlooking the town is the factory built by Scot, Alexander Morton, in 1898 to house his Donegal Carpets enterprise, producing beautiful handcrafted floor coverings which today grace such buildings as Buckingham Palace and the White House in Washington. It was also attacked by pirates on at least one occasion and later was a convenient haven for the ships of Dutch corsair, Klaas Campaen, as he awaited a royal pardon before retiring to Holland with his ill-gotten gains.

Bundoran walks • Tullan Strand – Famous surfing beach at the northern end of Bundoran. You can follow the beach all the way to the estuary and into Ballyshannon (4 miles). Seals in the estuary sometimes. Great sand dunes for exploring and sand surfing with body boards. No access to the dunes when red flag up as army firing range in use.

    South Donegal Lowlands LCA 36 South Donegal Lowlands Landscape Character Area is a rolling coastal agricultural landscape of wide fertile river valleys between higher bog covered uplands orientated along a northeast-southwest axis, with a long indented coastline of peninsulas and inlets that face south onto Donegal Bay. Killybegs, the largest port in Ireland, is situate in McSwyne’s Bay, a sheltered deep fjord - like inlet of deep water , and is a thriving and bustling harbour town of considerable antiquity with a multitude of historic and archaeological fabric. Fintragh Beach, west of Killybegs at the mouth of Fintragh Bay , has a substantial dune system and long sandy blue flag beach making it popular with tourists and day -trippers alike. St John’s Point, a narrow low-lying peninsula of mostly limestone agricultural land extends into Donegal Bay and informs the seaward view fr om a large sectio n of the coast; the cut granite lighthouse and surrounding walled complex at the end of the peninsula dates from the 1830’s forming an iconic landmark. Landscape Character type 176 Seascape Character Units Map/list Seascape units Seascape Unit 18 extends over most of the coastline of this LCA this is overlapped substantially by Seascape Unit 19 Key characteristics uses: Undulating coast sloping towards Donegal Bay characerised by four peninsulas, predominantly bog to the west and more fertile agricultureal land to the east. Killybegs, the largest port in Ireland, is situated on the coast that also has marine, aquaculture, tourism, agriculture, quarry and forestry uses. Coastal edge: Long indented coastal edge of peninsulas and inlets of rock, stone, sand and silt edges.
