THAT the Board enter into a one year lease extension (January 1, 2006 - December 31, 2006) under the current terms and conditions with National Sports Organization Inc. (Vancouver Canadians Professional Baseball Club) for the use of Nat Bailey Stadium; B. THAT no legal rights shall arise and no consents, permissions or licenses are granted hereby and none shall arise or be granted hereafter unless and until all contemplated legal documentation has been executed and delivered by all parties; and C. THAT once the form of the lease has been approved by the General Manager and the Director of Legal Services for the City of Vancouver, that the General Manager be authorized to execute and deliver such documentation on behalf of the Board. BACKGROUND Nat Bailey Stadium has been leased to National Sports Organization Inc. (Vancouver Canadians Professional Baseball Club) since January 2000, initially for three one-year terms and then two one-year extensions. The Park Board entered into a lease with the Vancouver Canadians under new circumstances. The previous Triple A professional baseball franchise moved to a new stadium in Sacramento, California and a Single A Team from the Northwest League of Professional Baseball moved into Nat Bailey Stadium as the Vancouver Canadians. The Canadians have worked hard to ensure the success of the stadium with opportunities for UBC Baseball, a variety of other amateur groups as well as providing the venue for a number of community charity fundraisers.

With the players' names in lights on the state-of the art scoreboard, real announcers, an impeccably groomed field and all the concessions open, the crowd of 150 family and friends was treated to a night of baseball with their own boys as the stars. The fun continued with an appearance by the Canadians' Sushi mascots, prize toss outs for all the kids and even the "kissing" camera catching a few parents in action. It was the first time midget teams have played at Nat Bailey and the opportunity came about through Serj Sangara, Director of the Dugout Club, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and growing baseball in B.C. The Dugout's relationship with the Canadians Foundation led to generously donating the use of Nat Bailey for the evening. The Dugout was also instrumental in bringing baseball to the Richmond Oval, where the Chuckers held their pre-season training. For the Canadians organization, the game served as a dress rehearsal for the official opening day and was a way to give back to the community. "It's not just the Canadians' field it's the communities' field," said Jeff Holloway, Canadians' manager of community relations.

Members of the Baseball Writers Association of America must cast their ballots for the American League Cy Young Award by the end of the season, and Hernandez's chances of being recognized as the league's best pitcher may depend upon how seriously they look at numbers beyond his record. On Sunday, the Seattle Mariners' star right-hander posted another line of zeroes with eight shutout innings against the Cleveland Indians, plus something else -- a victory that gave him a winning record for the first time in more than seven weeks. The Mariners beat the Indians 3-0 at Safeco Field, pushing Hernandez's record to 11-10 and lowering his earned run average to 2.30. Among the pitchers considered favorites for the AL Cy Young _ C.C. Sabathia of the Yankees, David Price of the Rays, Clay Buchholz of the Red Sox and Trevor Cahill of the A's -- Hernandez's individual body of work has been impressive on a team that hasn't.
