All fairly hit and thrown balls are in play with the following exceptions: A player may catch or field a ball on the top step of the dugout. However, if his momentum carries him into the dugout, he must come out to the top step to make the play. If he falls in the dugout, the ball is dead and the bases are awarded. A ball that caroms off the green facing of the dugout is alive unless it ricochets into the dugout. In such instance, the ball is dead. A ball that caroms off the blue facing or the dugout post is dead. A ball that lands on top of the dugout is dead. A player may lean against the tarp to make a play. However, he may not climb onto the tarp. A ball that lodges behind the tarp is out of play. A ball that goes into the bullpen is alive and in play. Players in the bullpen shall not obstruct the field in retrieving the ball. In such cases as a live ball bouncing over, going through or under a field or outfield fence, lodging in a fence, netting or umpire’s equipment, the book rule will apply.
